This is why Yasuo and Zed are problematic champions.

Knight Devout··81 votes·10,746 views

First of all, this is not a rant, nor I complain about assassins in general. League has plenty of assassins who are both rewarding for their role and fair to use. However, there are some aspect of those 2 champions that warps the rules commonly accepted by assassins, without sacrificing much for those assets. Because of those assets, Zed and Yasuo are so commonly seen on the pro scene with little regards to bans and composition, as they will always be somewhat efficient. And when an assassin is always efficient regardless of picks, there we have a problem, as an assassin role is killing, and death is the strongest crowd control in league.

  1. Being AD on top of being manaless means never leaving lane.
  2. They have excellent farming tools in a manaless kit. 3.great damage steroids means that arpen will win the game

Note that I didn't talk about their escapes, mobility, or repositioning, neither about windwall . And that's because their kit are well designed, and allow for counterplay and strategy. The reason why I write this post is not their champion vs champion interaction, but their champion vs lane and itemization vs itemization. Those three points wouldn't be problematic by themselves, but they are together as they "scale" multiplicatively.

Let's analyze my three points again.

  1. Being AD on top of being manaless means never leaving lane.

And that's true to an extent. What does it mean is that, being AD, and , in the case of Zed, AD with an execute , last hitting and farming will be easier by autoattacking, as your autoattacks will be naturally stronger. On top of that , once they get a Vampiric Scepter item 1053 , perhaps on top of a Doran's Blade item 1055 , they will gain health through minion at an alarming rate. Basically, they reduce a lot their concern about being harassed. And dodging/managing ranged harass is a great concern for a melee assassins. That's why you nerfed Diana health regen when she was dominant even after the first batch of nerfs. I think that Xypherous was working on major changes about Lifesteal. When that time comes, I hope you will consider reducing the amount of health you can harvest from minions. **Because not having to worry about mana and not having to worry about health is quite problematic. **

** 2.They have excellent farming tools in a manaless kit.**

Zed Zed here is the biggest offender. Even pro players who pick him agree that he has a farming potential that makes you forget being melee. The availability and low price of Shadow Shuriken , on top of an execute in his passive, makes last hitting easier, and allows for cs even on minions who are deep in the enemy harass zone. While harder, this is something that even Yasuo Yasuo can do with Steel Tempest. Unlike other assassins, they are manaless , and thus they don't have to worry about casting too many shurikens or tornado. If we compare that to other popular melee assassins, we have Katarina Katarina, who has huge cooldowns on Q early, and needs to be in the minion wave to use Sinister Steel. Akali's Q is single target, maybe slightly cheaper, but to proc the bonus damage she also needs to go in like Kata. Talon Talon and Fizz Fizz both have to manage their mana, and need to stay in a closer range. In short , their kits allow them a decent farm even when countered or being pressured, and thus removing one aspect of mastery of melee assassins, being able to farm when cornered. On top of that, we add point 1, that any incoming damage can be mitigated by lifesteal , as vampiric is just 800 gold and it builds into core items.

3. great damage steroids means that arpen will win the game

This point scales with the 2 already discussed, as both champions have, compared to their category and expected performance, a higher gold income on average thanks to their kit and resources. But let's get to the point. Both Zed and Yasuo have a huge damage spike : Zed from Shadow mark (20% to 50% extra damage from his combo, +100% AD) and Yasuo from his whooping 50% bonus armor penetration. Now, that essentially means that, if you are to itemize against them, building defenses will never be enough. To the point where, as a support, I feel botrk or iceborn are better picks than armor. Both of them scale insanely well with botrk, so they will also damage you through your current health. Zed also has a good AD steroid on his passive from living shadows, that helps to reduce the fact he builds item with low AD like Last whisper, Blade of the ruined king, and Ghostblade. In the case of Zed, he can easily pick both Yomuu and Last whisper, while Yasuo, prefers going infinity edge and wait for the extra arpen from his Last Breath. And, thanks to their kit, they will pick those items even when they have a just average lane phase. When both of them have both a last whisper, a brutalizer items, or the arpen from a black cleaver/Yasuo's last breath, it means that no amount of armor is going to save you. There is no efficient way to itemize against them, with the exception of item 3157 , that is AP and has a 1.5 minute cooldown. In my opinion, it's fine for them to have such an high damage, what I don't like is how that damage is effective against tanks and squishies alike thanks to the botrk/last whisper + their steroids combinations. Especially when, thanks to point 1 and 2, picking those items is not as hard as it is for other melee assassins.

#Example time:

Something that happens quite often:As Sejuani I have 212 armor from all my sources, what happens if I get ulted by a Yasuo with a last whisper(and arpen marks)? I lose 12 armor from marks. 50% bonus armor from Last Breath 39% Total armor from Last Whisper. 212-80(base armor)=132 Bonus Armor. This armor is halved by last breath, so we lose 66 armor, down to 146. This 146 armor is reduced by Last Whisper and masteries of 39%, down to 89. This armor is lastly reduced by flat arpen, so it's 77.

212 armor is 68% damage reduction, so the health is increased by 2,12 times. 74 armor is 43% damage reduction so the health is increased by 0,57 times. EDIT: Kudos to ProfDrDeath for reminding me that flat arpen is now applied after %arpen.

Zed works differently, but still has huge kill potential on tanks due to death mark & Botrk. When the death marks pops, it also factors in the damage done by botrk active and passive. So, if he managed to attack a tank even 3-4 times, that means that the 8% of his current health, applied 4 times, +10% of maximum health of the active, is applied again for half their intensity. With last whisper, and perhaps another brutalizer, that's enough to shred quite some health. Numbers are harder here due to botrk dealing less damage as the target loses health, but, it's quite easy to say that once Zed reaches 66% of the enemy health as damage during death mark, the mark proc will kill the target.

People seem willing to plop a physical damage champion in each lane without a care in the world. There used to be time when that was tantamount to throwing the game. Everyone would just buy a little armor and whoever was playing the tank would be overwhelmingly effective just stacking one resistance. It doesn't seem like armor penetration is budgeted correctly... either on items or as part of each champion's overall kit.

Knight Devout10 votes

That was before botrk, black cleaver, and penetration priority changes.

I was literally harassed by someone telling me that champs like Yasuo and Nidalee cannot be assassins. I literally was like, what the heck?, and tried to reason why Nidalee was a assassin.

Also, as assassins go, Kassadin has no real power like Fizz and Fiora and has no real sustain like Zed and Yasuo. Sure he can poke, but he has literally been nerfed a little too hard.

Teemo got nerfs but not that bad as Kassadins.

Its sad to say that the list of weakest champions are summed up into three champions...

  1. Taric
  2. Urgot
  3. Kassadin
Raja Chachki5 votes

Kassadin not underpowered see Voyboyy be amazed at how strong Kass is lategame he IS a hyper carry after all.

Rew7113 votes

I understand this. Completely.

But I miss the, "I'm going full AP + a little extra mana for the ultimate" Kassadin. Now in order to survive, he must tank it up where ever he is. Plus, the 5th double on the R is ridiculous.

Yasuo problem Pick one. If you at any point think a champion with a 43% win rate is any where near OP or even balanced for christs sake you're beyond bronze in mentality.

Stars Shaper7 votes

I wouldn't take winrate as sole index of a champion's performance.

I do agree that Yasuo isn't problematic at all and that it's right that good Zeds and good Yasuos shuld be threatening. The reason for Yasuo expecially to be on a low winrate is that he needs a team to be effective while Zed can do most of his tricks by hmself to give an advantage to the team (hence a better winrate).

Knight Devout7 votes

What I meant is that the power budget is skwered. Remember when Rengar was reworked even with a 43% winrate and they nerfed his splitpush? Similar.

Rengar was doing something he wasn't supposed to be proficient in and for that he had to pay with his main role effectiveness. In the case of Rengar, we had splitpushing vs assassinations. In the case of yas, tankbusting. "But that doesn't help win game". The point is , when it does, it's impossible to deal with it, and in those cases Riot usual approach is to nerf and reduce the amount of games he succeds in.

Rufus Crabmiser1 votes

lol. Maybe that's what gives him any sort of edge against another assassin. The ability to shred tanks if he can actually combo.

Knight Devout7 votes

You mean, you think tankbusting is something Yasuo should be proficient with ? I guess that's a point of view, I still don't think assassins should be proficient against tanks, but at that point it's just a matter of opinions.

What about points 1 and 2? In short, don't you think that Yasuo (and Zed too) were balanced around the fact that even a below average Zed player can farm quite proficiently with him, thus securing their first 2 items relatively early in the midgame? That's also a somewhat valid point of view, but... it essentially means they are standardizing risks and rewards.

Stars Shaper5 votes

Yes, because Riot themselves talked about how he was supposed to be a tank shredder when he was released.

Knight Devout4 votes

Which is ok, but as I said, that doesn't justify point 1 and 2.

Narasimha3 votes

Point one doesn't apply to Yasuo at all. He gets harassed so easily its not even funny. The only reason Zed even gets a chance is because he can farm with his Q, though that causes a different set of problem for him. Which kind of gets into point two. Yasuo can't farm up even with Steel Tempest without expecting hit or two from his opponent. And if you're letting him farm so safely, its probably more on you. Zed's farming skills are higher than most champions, but its necessary because his killing potential is lower. His entire focus is on a move that has a built in delay and is countered by a few items, let alone abilities.

Knight Devout2 votes

Well, if you move and E enough to charge Way of the Wanderer shield, that harass becomes mitigated by quite a lot. Especially because with riot mobility and windwall you can negate damage when you know your shield is down.

utDOOM4 votes

Actually, his E doesn't charge his passive anymore. He lost that a long time ago.

That seems to be how he was designed. His crit passive combined with an ult that explicitly grants him bonus armor pen, only good against bonus armor from runes/masteries/items as opposed to flat pen which would make him much more of a threat against squishy targets.

Which is odd as Kha'Zix was nerfed due to his ability to bust tanks with his % missing health on Q.

Knight SoIaire 7 votes

the thing that you need to consider is whether yasuo was supposed to be proficient as an assasin

in original concept riot wanted to make a meele carry, an autoatacking version of riven

he was put as assasin because of his ult allowing him to bust carries

hence i would call tankbusting one of his main roles as a meele carry while i think that he shouldnt be able to get your carries so easily

we can discuss it from any perspective we want but all that we will get to is that yasuos kit allows for too much stuff that doesnt point him in any direction assasin , adc, fighter, who knows to which one he is closest to, he posseses some key components of every one (he is bursty and can close the gap like an assasin, he deals good sustained dmg and busts tanks like adc, he has a good mix of mobility damage and defense like a fighter does)

my personal opinion is that riot should pick him an actual role and rework his tit, scrapping what doesnt fit and leaving what is good

Knight Devout4 votes

melee carry is a cool concept, but what melee carry doesn't obliterate squishies when he's doing his job fine? What you can do to make a champion an effective tank buster while giving a reasonable time to react to carry is make the bulk of their damage % health based, so that they are ineffective against low health target, since they are more inclined to build resistance penetration than raw power . Elise is a good example of this, with both a %current health and a % missing health ratio.

However, then you have to find a kit for Yasuo that fits with his gameplay without being either too strong or too weak.

Knight SoIaire 1 votes

melee carry is a cool concept, but what melee carry doesn't obliterate squishies when he's doing his job fine?

the one that cant cover long distances in 0,5 sec while ccing them

main problem with making yasuo a meele carry was dealing with ranged harras so riot made resolve yasuos shiels which easily fuffiled the task, then they nerfed it to the point where yasuo is as easy to harras from a far as anyone else (there is just a bigger chance that yasuo will fight back, but he isnt realy safer when facing ranged opponent), which contributed to making him even more of an assasin (you cant survive so you need to kill before you die)

What you can do to make a champion an effective tank buster while giving a reasonable time to react to carry is make the bulk of their damage % health based,

or making their gapclosing more interactive so carries can avoid close combat with them 100% carries that get busted by yasuo are those who got caught by him, and its not easy to just escape him

my point still stands that yasuo's kit fits too many roles at the same time,

any carry who can get to other carry without much retaliation (like yasuo and lets say twitch and even vi) can be considered an assasin and work effectively as one (especialy twitch who doesnt even get close)

so that they are ineffective against low health target,

adc is a natural tank buster, why dont all of them have % hp damage, not all of them even take botrk

the key to takbusting comes from being able to deal high damage 24/7 not having % dmg (i agree that they need arpen thou) botrk is just a counter to teams that literaly stack tons of raw hp over resists

so to summarize (if i cover loads of poinnts in one post its hard to see clearly what i mean) -a carry cant be simply able to reach other carries and unload on them (thats an assasin) -yasuo fits both role of a carry cause he deals high sustained damage and an assasin since he can get to enemy carries fast -a carry does not need % hp damage to be an effective tankbuster, example is the entire marksman role which does not rely on getting botrk every game -elise is a bad example, when she was good she was plainly op (s3) and her % dmg was good enough to kill anything she found (i loved playing her then), now as she is nerfed tanks can ignore her with a handfull of mr

Knight Devout2 votes

Another point: let's say you dodged the Steel Tempest knockup as the squishy, Then you see Nautilus red ring below your feet , or a lee sin flashes in just to R .

Then, the dodge was useless.

Earl Eulrich6 votes

actually...the usual approach of Riot is to nerf tanks whenever it seems necessary to deal with them to win a game *sigh*

And I don´t really think the kits of Zed and Yasuo are really well designed regarding to offering counterplay (just watch a reply from Keane´s Zed-play Yesterday...he had been fully willing to even pick him vs Lissandra, which in theorie is one of the best counters out there - and he rightfully did so, even her instant CC could not deal with his superior mobility and pushing). But I agree that it´s heavily problematic that ArmorPen is very effective vs squishies and tanks alike.

Winrate is the ONLY thing that matters.

Pro tier winrate indicates how strong or weak a champion is. Wood tier winrate indicates whether or not you should actually pick the champion in wood tier.

People who claim "winrate isn't everything" either commit the fallacy of thinking people are just bad/good with a champion (irrelevant across millions of games) or argue that KD or having certain tools is somehow more important than whether the champion can actually leverage that KD or those tools to win games (this is what got Leblanc ruined).

Knight Devout5 votes

Nah, they are indicators. I could make a champ, and say, call it Exodia , the Forbidden One.

As exodia, instead of regular keys you connect a piano keyboard to the computer, and if you play good enough you win the game, if you don't play good enough you lose it.

Even if I leverage the difficulty of the piece to play until Exodia winrate is 50% across all tiers, that doesn't solve one fact: the enemy cannot do nothing to stop you from playing , so it's no longer a pvp game, but a me versus me game.

LeBlanc had the same problem: she would launch her Q, immediately follow with her E/W , and if the spell connected she would unload the rest of her damage before Distortion back to safety as either the silence fades, or the enemy dies. The fact that her Distortion also made her gankproof didn't help.

The fact that her Distortion also made her gankproof didn't help.

That's a counterplay issue. Counterplay has nothing to do with power level. A champion that deals 1 damage per second to every enemy on the map and can't do anything else lacks counterplay and is also unviable.

Leblanc could launch her Q blah blah kill you instantly while being ungankable, and then lose anyway because it was the only thing she could do. In teamfights she'd gib an enemy squishy and potentially get out alive with no health and everything on cooldown... but there's more to the game than teamfights and said squishy was also able to push towers, actually farm, perhaps carry some reliable cc, etc, all of which combined was vastly more useful than ungankability and the ability to get one kill and become useless for the remainder of the teamfight.

Janna used to hit 61% winrate and nobody complained because her kit didn't translate into a leet KD in lane. She was actually weak in lane, and her contribution was largely invisible to less skilled players: the global movespeed buff, the shield to negate poke and improve pushing power, high speed for safe warding and repositioning, etc.

Rammus was at 60% too and he was considered fine for a long time because powerball has tons of counterplay. His real strengths were invisible: excessive survivability due to DBC, hard to perceive damage reflection, double dip passive, an ult that damages towers.

It bothers me that every now and then some guy with an unpopular opinion comes with perfectly legitimate reasoning and people just hate him for it arguing "BUT 43% WIN RATE!!!!" is that really all the opposing side has to say

It really amuses me that after MONTHS of given feedback ppl can only see and remeber the "43% winrate" comments.

Well, I also remember a high elo Yasuo main claiming that, as an Yasuo main, he thought his champion needed to be reworked. precisely, I'm talking about this post

Knight Devout9 votes

Also, sometimes a low winrate is a symptom of a problem of strength, rather than weakness. Such as for other toxic champions in the past with a low winrate , like LB.

When your strenght are something the enemy team cannot tinker against, what Riot does is lowering everything else to limit the number of times your strenght can actually shine .

This is precisely the issue with Yasuo. His kit is so overloaded that they had to overnerf him to make him bearable to face.

Keevalroy3 votes

Many people can say he's bearable now, unfortunately for me, I feel like punching a hole through my monitor when I see him...period. It doesn't matter if one is on my team or the enemy team, just seeing his face pisses me off and it gets worse as the game goes on as I see him dashing all over the place and ulting off of any and all displacements.

I can say he's weaker now than he was originally, but it doesn't change how poorly designed he is.

Knight SoIaire 2 votes

his kit is a problem riot simply overnerfed him because he was like s3 kassadin

I dont really care about zeds kit. he needs the farm to not fall off and he is much less explosive than a lot of current assassins.

my biggest problem is he can do no wrong. he has like, 2000 range on his shadow replace. you just cant lock him down for a kill. he might screw up his combo, go in on a kill he definitely shouldnt have, but you never benefit from anything except "guess Zed didnt kill someone this time". its always, zed wins, or we both lose.

Hitting the nail on the proverbial head for the problems Yasuo and Zed pose, OP. And very eloquent, too.

One thing: Your calculation for the ArPen stuff is slightly off. Flat ArPen is applied after %-pen since S3 - which only makes your calculations lead to a more grim result.

Would you rather he be able to ult you out of nowhere with no given notice like Annie Lissandra Malphite Mordekaiser Syndra Warwick Zed ?

Why can't we just get thornmail and Reinforced Armor for yasuo also get a ninja tabi

Earl Eulrich4 votes

Because that doesn´t help much to survive for longer as the OP pointed out - and then you lack the dmg to actually be a threat to Yasuo, so he has an even easier time getting rid of you. The only way to counter him is to not build armor, but to go for dmg instead and blow him up if he misplays.

Knight Devout4 votes

Because they don't help, with the exception of Ninja tabi. Thornmail is only strong if you can reduce the damage by armor, but when the enemy shreds your armor of 60% it's almost better if you had invested that gold in offense.

Plus, going mid with thornmail ninja tabi and x/17/x masteries? Well, maybe as tank malphite mid, but that hardly works.

I think talking about kat just makes you look kind of dumb at this point. She was reworked And then gutted. And now her ult is gutted too. If you think THIS KAT did damage or has wave clear? old kat had waveclear and did DAMAGE.

People forget what its like to actually deal damage in this game apparently. just look at adc's Only class left that isn't gutted simply because ADC items have never been balanced. you still see players critting 500+ conistantly in team fights...despite having under 50% crit chance.(yomuu's+ IE... the bane of existance) we've all heard about the "oh my adc crit 4 times in a row so i won that trade or teamfight.. or skirmish... or THE GAME"

Knight Devout5 votes

So because someone is lucky we should make assassins like Katarina single-handedly decide a game?

keep in mind, Katarina was gutted because she resets. And many times Rioters said that it's really hard to keep a champion healthy when he can resets his abilities. Kha'Zix, Tristana, etc.

The reason why Kata damage has to be that way is because, if she gets 2 kills/assists after ulting, she ults again.
