Champion mastery

So how exactly does the rating for Champion Mastery work? Because I have never (not that I am aware of) recieved an S+, and I assume that is due to getting deaths (a friend told me that you need to have 0 deaths to get S+). So one game as Blitzcrank support I went 3/1/8 and got an S. However last game I went 0/0/13 and got an A. I'm guessing the rating depends more on your kills than deaths?

It's not just based on deaths, it's based on your total performance, kills, deaths, assists, wards placed, CS, in relation both to the champ you've taken against everyone else who's taken that champion and the role you were playing.
