Noob Question About A Zyra Build

Zyra Build Guide: Feel the Thorns Embrace: Season 7 Zyra Support Guide by Sexclipse

So I'm trying to learn the game and the weekly rotation this week has Zyra. I heard from my more experienced friends that Zyra is a support/mage so i decided to learn some items and become familiar with them by attempting to make a build for her. I figured i'd learn by fooling around with items and learning what items exist. So i'm not going to post my build but i started with Doran's ring because i figured she supported with damage rather than heals or shields. I then went AP and used Rylai's Scepter and Zhonya's Hourglass because i figured i could play around my plants and stasis while the slow kept the enemies at bay. Then i played a game to test it out.

So after that colossal failure I looked up an actual guide to compare and see where i went wrong. Why does this guy go all magic penetration? Is this actually what i should do? He says her skills don't scale (Idk how that justifies Magic Penetration) so he uses magic penetration instead of AP because it somehow gives him more damage but why would he build static Magic Penetration if the enemy team isn't even guaranteed to use Magic Resistance? Am i just a noob who read the guide wrong? I'm so confused.

As a Zyra main I can answer all or most of the questions you have. You should always start spell thief's as Zyra (also a possible buff planned for next patch). Supports have low gold income so Doran's is not a good choice. Her abilities do not scale very well so magic penetration is bought instead of ability power. I like to rush Liandre's (after sightstone) into voidstaff. Rhyalis is a good item when learning her but overall it isnt too efficient.

Lets say a target has 50 magic resist and you have 30 magic pen. You would negate 30 magic resist which is a huge damage increase. Lets say a tank has 200 magic resist. 30 less does not mean as much. Magic pen works much better against squishy targets and you build Liandre's in order to deal with tanks.

If you have any other questions I would be happy to answer.

So could you put into context the damage increase if i went a full Magic Pen versus going straight AP? The RPG player in me thinks damage beats armor pen and having armor pen is supposed to accentuate your high damage so saying negating their defense even though you don't really boost your attack doesn't make sense to me.

The short version is that her plants only get ** 15% ** bonus damage from AP (most people don't know this and only see the 60% for her Q and 50% for E on the initial hit and think, "That's not that bad.") Early game the math comes out about the same for AP or MP. But that mere 15% bonus AP to plants just sucks for scaling.

Not quite. This video by Melyn - another Zyra Main is also helpful in explaining how Mpen works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFRB65h-RgU

Well Said Kynn.

Champs have a base MR, and most get some MR runes. Just click on an enemy..or look at your own team (or yourself)...most champs start with about 40ish armor and MR. SO until you get yer Sorc boots and Voidstaff, you are always doing more damage with increased MP.

Don't bother, she is unplayable now, they nerfed her so hard

No they didnt.

Yet, Zyra mains still manage to hover around 53% winrate. Amazing how that happens.

Support main here.

If you are starting out, then you can make do with a little bit of AP and Magic Penetration - but you must be VERY careful that you don't start taking farm or causing the ADC to lose farm. The stacking of Magic Penetration serves two roles in this build: a) it makes it harder for your plants to steal farm from your adc; and b) it keeps Zyra present as a potential carry and damage dealer later in game.

The Magic Penetration is not really a factor earlier in game but as players build tankier items (read: MR) then it becomes more important later. Consequently, Zyra players tend to stack the Mpen so that they are more of a factor once the champion actually leaves the laning phase. (A good Zyra can be a real tank destroyer.)

Check out a guy called Melyn (on youtube: Jason Barnett) - he's a Zyra main and he can offer you some more insight.

Rush eye of the watcher and then sorc boots. You can get mpen cheaper than raw AP and on a support budget its crucial. My build, in this order is: item 2301 item 3020 item 3116 item 3151 and then see what the team needs. The damage early from just eye and sorc boots is good enough and the peel you can provide from plants with rylais is underestimated. you dont need liandrys right away and getting it a bit later will keep your damage on par against tanks and squishies. Grabbing abyssal after this is there are a lot of tanks help do damage to tanks and youll blow up squishies as well. The reason Mpen is more important is because she is a dps mage who hits many times. Getting your damage to do true damage basically outputs a lot more damage than hitting a lot and just barely increasing the damage because of her low ratios.
