@Riot: Sion has completely replaced Mundo as "the" tank top laner

I just want to say, that I love both of these champs. Which is why I feel so bad for Mundo in his current state. Sion just overall has much more going for him.

To start, Mundo has fallen out of favor even before sion got his rework, but now it seems that sion has replaced him. When a person wanted to play Mundo, it is because of his objective control and late game damage etc. The problem is that sion can do practically everything mundo can do but better.

Next, Mundo has trash early game, because of scaling off health etc. Not until he gets the like of item 3068 item 3065 item 3083 is he a force to be reckoned with. Sion, however, can be an early game bully while scaling just as well or better in the late game, due to his stacking health and high base damages.

Of course, Mundo is a decent peeler because of his low cd/spammable cleavers. Sion is a great body guard, that can effectively zone off people (in fear of e+q combo, or an ult out of nowhere) by just getting close enough to them, scaring them away from your carries. Not to mention that Sion's model is actually larger than average.

Lastly, the objective control that Mundo provides in Dragon and Baron lies in the current hp % damage in his cleavers (25 %), and his E steroid (over 100 ad). The problem is that Sion's kit can still make him just as good at this. Sion's Q when charged up all the way does 300 (180% ad) damage, and his W does up to 140 (40% ap) (14% of max health) which is arguably better for dragon control, because it is max health. want to say, that I love both of these champs. Which is why I feel so bad for Mundo in his current state. Sion just overall has much more going for him.

I feel that simply buffing Mundo will not solve this problem, neither will nerfing Sion. Mundo just needs a flatout rework to maintain his own style, instead of competing with Sion for the same niche.

You confused Maokai with Sion again

what do you mean again? And I would compare the likes of Maokai to being a better Chogath if anything.

Think what he means is that Sion hasn't taken Mundo's place as the 'tank' top laner because that title is/was Maokai's to lose. Maokai took Mundo's spot after Maokai got his rework and he has yet to release that title.

Mundo's going to struggle as long as item 3165 is core on everything.

Grievous Wounds is a pretty big design problem in general. Balancing champions for its presence is very challenging.

That is a sad consequence of all of the midlane nerfs going left and right, which makes poor mundo even more unviable. Very good point, didn't think about that until now.

Slows, cooldowns. Mundo can be played more aggressively and get more done early on.

Difference being Mundo is much more innately tanky due to his ultimate.

You can't forget the infinite stacking hp that Sion has, and his psuedo extra health from his passive which can still net a kill.

At least Maokai and Sion are interactive unlike Mundo. With Mundo you just have to poke him constantly until he makes a mistake randomly. Maokai and Sion have much easier weaknesses to take advantage of.

Mundo is still pretty good. He has a higher midgame spike than sion. Mundo can kill carries If left unchecked. Sion can't do that unless people stand there. Sion does gets tankier but mundo can carry a game still.

Sion has his Q, W, E and R to threaten the enemy team in a team fight. Mundo has a Q and a bit of AA damage from e.

Mundo definitely needs a buff in the durability department. The current itemization is very unfavorable on him. Praying for rework soon!

Their roles are slightly different, to be fair. Even 6 tank item Mundo is usually used like a Fighter, meant to threaten enemy carries more than a tank would defend their own carries. Direct balance decisions don't translate well between champions of different roles, even if their build paths are functionally similar.

The problem is that both are used as fighters when built full tank. Sion's damage is much bigger than it looks from having one of the highest base ad's in the game, having half of his kit physical the other magic damage, armor shred to make the squishies easier to kill, % max health to hurt tanks more, tons of cc and aoe damage etc.
