In his current state, ryze is an exellent duelist. Not so hot with a two people on his ass 4. 2v1
Just dont let him EVER be in a 1 on 1 lane.

Sadly he can CC you hard at level 4 so if you can get thoes boots at level 4 then yah I guess you could do ok.

Thats why I mentioned Cho'Gath. The range of ryzes spells is about the same as his silence, so if he roots you and start pounding your ass, silence him, and his passive is useless for just long enough for you to walk away.

Counterpicking isnt counterplay though.
The counterplay to Ryze is to shut him down incredibly hard early.
You know the problem with champions who are countered by that? It isnt really possible to do. Nasus, Vlad, Ryze. All are supposed to be bullied early on, and that isnt easy to do right now (note Nasus isnt unbalanced, but he has the same play pattern when it comes to countering them).
