Genuinely Curious, Why Does Dr. Mundo Exist?

Frosted Tips··9 votes·8,595 views

What role/game play style does he offer that others don't?

Why have a champion that's healing forces every one to buy grevious wounds, which then forces them to be balanced around grevious wounds always being applied to them?

What makes Dr. Mundo unique and makes players want to play him?

Why does Dr. Mundo's kit have no synergy?

I don't think Mundo is OP or anything, but I do think he is a disaster of a champion, extremely flawed in design, and honestly kinda pointless like why should he still be in the game? Would love to be proven wrong, so please let me know what you think.

Mundo is a fighter. Walks in with crazy health regen and tackles the carry while soaking and sponging damage.

Grievous wounds are more universal against lifesteal and heals, and it just hits Mundo harder than it would. Doesn’t mean that you’re forced to buy it, it just helps shuts his healing down by half. And the reason why this counterplay exists is so that the enemies can think on what they should buy.

Uniqueness? His ability to not give a fuck as he regens HP.

His kit does have synergy, but it’s outdated synergy. Bastard can get kited easily.

Riot doesn’t delete champs. They update, rework or revert them. In this case, it’s most likely both update and rework.

Don't know why you're getting downvoted. My 2 jungle mains from when I still played this game aren't even recognizable in the way that they function, and their 'rework' is the main reason why I can't stomach playing anymore. Zac Sejuani

i miss assassin "mark" fizz i had his damage so calculated to a point and fighter styled Evelynn where she can hate shield ult a group to weaken them then use e/autos while throwing in perma qs.

So a fighter that is also a tank?

Grievous wounds are more universal against lifesteal and heals, and it just hits Mundo harder than it would. Doesn’t mean that you’re forced to buy it, it just helps shuts his healing down by half.

I mean if you don't buy it you are trolling, and it is 40% reduction

And the reason why this counterplay exists is so that the enemies can think on what they should buy.

Yes building items to deal with champions iscounterplay, but he is balanced around grevious wounds always being applied because it is too core to his kit.

Uniqueness? His ability to not give a fuck as he regens HP.

That doesn't seem like a healthy identity

His kit does have synergy, but it’s outdated synergy. Bastard can get kited easily.

Can you explain the synergy?

Riot doesn’t delete champs. They update, rework or revert them. In this case, it’s most likely both update and rework.

I mean that is the point of the post that he needs to be reworked.

Mundo is not a tank.

I just was asking for clarification from the commenter since that is what I interpreted from the comment.

Mundo exists from a time when there was a "Bruiser" class. This has largely been reclassified into either Juggernauts or Divers. In this case, Mundo is a Juggernaut, as he lacks hard CC and mobility, which is the most basic distinction between Juggernaut and Tanks.

Mundo made sense back in season 1/beta (I don't remember when he was introduced) because he did what "tanks" needed to do at that time - stand in front of things and soak damage. Over time, tanks have become more defined and that definition has left Mundo in the dust. A few seasons ago, when they introduced the new classes/subclasses, Mundo fit nicely into the Juggernaut class, and I don't think that's a bad place for him.

In terms of his thematic, he revolves around heath (which is why he's a doctor) - all his abilities cost health to cast. I am fairly sure he was the first champion to have health costs associated with his abilities, so he was experimental in that regard too.

Overall, his kit actually still isn't that bad, but it does lack a cohesiveness and polish modern champs have. His model is a mess. I would say he is top 10 for a VGU at this point, and it's only a matter of time before he gets one.

No synergy

This is wrong, though

Frosted Tips2 votes

What synergy does it have? It feels like they just slapped 4 abilities together one of which is just sunfire with tenacity. And then just added a stat as a passive.

? Well he has a kit well rounded around building full tank and being a damage dealing juggernaught with in-fight regeneration. His Q, as %current health in magic damage allows him to scale in a duel without bothering too much about building damage, but doesn't have any scaling so no synergy with damage building. His W, as you said pretty much sunfire, allows him to deal damage around him while fighting which is good for waveclearing and fighting. It also fits the theme of the crazy masochist doctor with brain deficiency (setting himself on fire) His E also fits that theme : he hurts himself then on purpose to become madder and therefore more powerful. And his ult is him injecting himself with a drug that regenerates him.

All in all, his kit is rather simple, one might even said braindead, yet fully synergistic and perfectly themed with the concept of the champion. He's a regen based fighter that is supposed to be very tanky, throw infected cleavers at his ennemies and fight them in melee range. He was supposed to scale well (but doesn't nowadays cause tankiness sucks and he gets kited). I don't understand what your complaint is.

PS : seeing how garbage tankiness is right now, you don't even need grievous wounds to kill Mundo. "just build damage" works fine.

The play style where you go where you please.

And he's the only regen bruiser/tank in the game atm.

That is, someone like Pyke comes along and beat the regen-specialist's super regen ulti on a normal spell while also having the benefit of being stealthed that activates on command without any delay while doing so, because reasons.

GigglesO2 votes

There were quite a few. Morde, Mundo, Volibear, Vlad, Old Sion, Old AAtrox. We (mostly) removed drain tanks and soak tanks. Damage dealers hated them too much.

3TWarrior2 votes

you forgot swain XD he may be a battle mage, but ignore his durability at your peril

GigglesO2 votes

yes, yes I did. I'm sure I missed a few more or ones that were on the boarder like tanky graggas too.

He's the guy you play when you just want to fuck around and have a good time. I play him like I play grand theft auto, but instead it's grand theft cs/lane/objectives/monsters. Get that 5 star wanted rating with the enemy team. Or your team. Do as you please.

OrangeMarine4 votes

he's old.

if he was made today, he would have a blink or dash, or % damage reduction. and nothing to lose for compensation.

3TWarrior1 votes

don't forget that he'd leave a trail of fire behind him while gaining increased move speed (which he actually has move speed bonus on his ult), a reset mechanic on his cleaver because he's sadistic(actually has that but not in the same sense), he could probably pay his E multiple times to increase his AD to phenomenal values at the cost of a lot of health but then his ultimate would heal it immediately and he'd be incredibly OP, incredibly OP, Incredibly...OP

lol

Ralanr3 votes

He’s an old design.

Flawless Fetus2 votes

What? Mundo is lit. Lol. He doesn't bring anything new to the table, ofc not he's fucking old, but his playstyles fairly unique. He's the only "regen-tank". His kit doesn't not have synergy. He needs to be in melee range/deep in the fight for his e and his w. His ult allows him to stay deep, and gives him the movement speed to get in there. His q also helps him get into melee range. It kind of fits. All of his skills drain his life. He has multiple ways to get his life back. It's not an amazing design, but it's not garbage. Maybe I'm biased because I like the champ. He's, in a sense, the rammus of APs. He also does shit loads of both magic and physical damage. If I play him I normally end the game with moat damage taken and most damage dealt.

His balls deep "I can't die because I'm healing, playstyle is unique. No sound in game is as satisfying as the thwack from his cleavers. Lol.

I play him because he's an "AP rammus", a tank, a physical dps, a magic dps, and is capable of carrying.

I already talked about the synergy in my first rant. I likely haven't convinced you of anything, but have you played him? Most tanks "can't die", deal meh damage, and have good cc. Mundo "can't die", deals great damage, and has low cc. Imo he's the only champ of his kind. Most comparable is shyvana, and that's still not very close.

Edit because people apparently are mad if mundo gets called a tank. He's not categorized as one. He doesn't have a huge defense steroid like real tanks do. He is one of the best damage soaks in the game, though. He's a fighter that tanks better than most tanks do. So call him what you will. Lol.

Only "regen tank" that isn't even a tank

and isn't the only one.

They're all cocktier Regen compared to mundo, though. Lol.

3TWarrior2 votes

he wasn't balanced around grievous wounds previously. Riot changed his healing from 40 - 60 , to something to 100% base hp

he used to be very bulky, run in like a freight train and try to focus a single target while applying enough pressure that you couldn't just pass him by

now everything is so many levels of crazy that he either dies or his carries do while he does the best he can

#he's a fun champion with a strong laning presence (though item dependent) and decent mid and late game. His niche is that he's fun and a mix of offense and defense while being one of the few champions to have a playstyle not solely about damage done

There are far more than just mundo

3TWarrior1 votes

coincidentally, most of them are older champions XD some of the new ones are fun too but then you get into the "they're also very likely to win" thing

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

Honestly, the most succinct answer is poke tank.

He's a tank that pokes you. I don't know that there's anyone else that has that niche. You can maybe argue that Maokai's update did this. But what makes Mundo unique is that skillshot poke damage coupled with his ability to outsustain you over time.

SirHydro3 votes

Mundo is not a tank. High HP + Regen =/= Tank. Tank = resistances.

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

Mundo builds mostly resistances. He doesn't build like a fighter or juggernaut.

In terms of game role, you could critique that he doesn't have hard cc; I would argue that just makes him an unconventional tank. He still has the slow, and he builds tank items.

Not a lot of point arguing semantics here. If you claim he's a fighter, he's still a tanky poke fighter. Point stands.

GigglesO3 votes

HE used to be a good soak tank... but riot removed those making him a relic of the past.

Agree. People call him a juggernauts, but he's really a true crossover between the two classes.

Meep Man1 votes

He's extremely old. He's fun to play just because of how stupid it can be sometimes.

He is a champion they are looking to rework, but there are a decent little number in line before him, so he won't be soon. If he ever DID get reworked, I would guess he would likely revolve around one thing: Pain. The dealing and receiving of it. I'm not saying he would become a DPS character, no. I'm more just saying he'd become a champion that cares about people around him hurting, including himself, and probably heal off of it. Like, an aura type ability that just causes him to be healed for a % of the damage dealt to units around him, forcing you to focus him, except he is also super durable. Something like that I imagine.

Dr. Mundo's niche is basically being an unkillable murder machine that YOU HAVE TO KILL because he doesn't do small amounts of damage at all. Except, as said, he's stupid hard to kill.
