Could Soraka's sweetspot ever come back?

I thought Soraka's sweetspot on her Q was a really nice thing. It felt satisfying when you hit it and somewhat took some skill to hit? I feel like it made Soraka at least a little more interesting as a support. Does anyone else agree?

I miss it too. I also miss the old Q range

You have to understand landing this "sweet spot" had some kind of skill expression to it, which riot doesn't want heal/shield supports to have, so they had to dumb it down.

What exactly did that "sweetspot" do? Sorry, but I don't know anything about Soraka besides her actual kit.

sweetspot (aka the smaller center circle, think Zigg's ult) did more damage and slowed the target

note that if you didn't land the sweetspot there was no slow.

Which actually made her really bad since back then raka's Q also did not have the "gain movement speed and regen", it was just a heal based on number of champs hit (the heal also scaled off her W). This was also a time when her Q cost more mana (yes, more mana that it does now even though they did nerf the mana cost on her Q).

basically even if you hit zed or leblanc or lee sin you still died because you probably did not slow them nor did you get any movespeed bonuses so they just chased you down and killed you.

Personally, I'm more leaning towards keeping her Q the way it is. She's a 450 ip champion; the first support any new player is going to unlock. making her ryze in skillfloor requirement would be dumb and draw a lot of potential players away from playing the support role and make soloQ wait times even longer.

Nah fam, that's Sona. Soraka hasn't been newb-friendly since her rework.

somewhat took some skill to hit

Rito doesn't like that for enchanter supports, they want them to be braindead slave of adc.

Yeah, it's removal basically ham-stringed any form of skill expression with her... Not to mention that it now doesn't matter how many ppl you hit with Q as long as you hit a champ (From what i remember you previously got more self-heal for hitting multiple people)

Not saying that even that mechanic was prefect, if it ever came back it would probably have to be different, but id love it back.

To be fair the amount of HP Soraka used to be able to regain from hitting a 3-5 man Q was absolutely insane. I remember there were times where I'd restore half my health bar instantly off of 1 Q. I think Rejuvenation is a much more balanced mechanic for soraka even if I do miss Q's old skill expression. Recently I've been mostly turning to Equinox as a form of skill expression since you can really make life hell if you place those right. to be honest I'm finding the root on it just as if not sometimes more effective than the AoE silence itself. [sg-ahri-2]

Winterwings1 votes

The root is supposed to be more effective though?... because it's her only hard CC It's only downside is that it's too damn easy to avoid getting rooted in the first place (Unless you already got hit by some other Hard CC) making her E more of a "follow-up" tool, and therefore sorta negating Soraka the ability to set things up by herself (And indirectly hurting her skill expression in the process). Iv'e noticed that even with the slow from her Q it's still sorta easy to walk out of her Equinox zone.

BottleCapster1 votes

That's actually precisely why I note Equinox usage as an indication of skill. Using equinox directly on an opponent is hardly ever grounds to get the root off, so you have to think predictively about where your opponent can and likely will go. Account for the delay, and you can find yourself ignoring the silence to set up a snare-trap just when your opponent thinks they have the time to get through it. With proper placement, even if your Equinox doesn't succeed in rooting them, you can successfully zone them away from key areas by using the root-delay as a viable threat. Likewise if you use your Q at the right time you can slow them just enough to make an otherwise simple jaunt a nightmare, since they only need to be in the area for the root to go off. If they think they can move through it, they may mis-judge your ability to affect their movement and get themselves caught.

It really has become one of if not my favorite skills in the game for just how much it rewards good planning and prediction.

Having the slow on such a tiny hit box didn't give you enough control. I think her Q and E work really well at the moment. Soraka back then just healed much faster and had instant selfheal that could multiply in team fights, but they nerfed all that and gave her more reliable CC. Also the heal value for hitting starcall was tied to points in W, which gave you crazy early game sustain if you maxed W. You could win most lanes just by letting your ADC take stupid trades over and over again. The overall heal was so high that the sweetspot didn't matter at all.

[sg-poppy] I haven't really been playing her all that much, when did they remove that again? I noticed a lot of other players started feeling oppressive with her but I wasn't sure why. I guess her Q change is the reason. Personally I liked the way it was before. It gave the regen even if you nicked them, but didn't slow them. I thought it was fair. Getting slowed because you get nicked feels lame because her lane partner might be able to follow up with a skill shot too easily.

The sweet spot was removed because back then having so much of the spell's power in something so unreliable (it really was tiny) meant that her kit needed to have a lot more power in her W, and it made it tempting for Soraka players not to bother interacting in the lane. After all, why bother interacting if your only chance of having impact on the enemy is that unreliable? Better to just stay back.

Making her Q no longer rely on the small sweetspot made it much more reliable, and makes it much more tempting for Soraka players to actually try to interact with and pressure their opponent. In exchange for that, Riot could nerf her W significantly.

Theoretically it was a change that made her easier but when Soraka had that "skill expression" in her kit it only resulted in her not even bothering with Q. Soraka players aim a lot more skillshots now than they did back then.

SanKakU1 votes

Yeah I guess, but some people still max W first.

Agree 100%. Made her way more fun to play and skillful to use. Was so sad when they got rid of it

Soraka sweet spot was [sg-jinx] . I'd love to see them bring it back, but there was good reason it was taken away. Particularly because it opened up some absurdly powerful trades and waveclear. I do miss it as a form of skill-expression and I think there are other ways it could come back in the future, but I'm also mildly scared if Riot taps my dear sweet child again.

I'm thinking she was too weak with the sweetspot. The slow was hard to get and it's very difficult to get the root on her E unless someone in it was hit with another CC at the same time.

Solidair31 votes

I mean sort of. Maybe with a minor slow on the outer edges and a major slow if you hit the sweet spot. Though I wonder if she could use a nerf, anyway.

champion is just total cancer to lane against. Q is way too easy to land. personally I'd be ok if the heal was tied solely to the sweet spot.

either that or the heal you get from not landing in the sweet spot is super weak. right now its just too easy to land a Q on people.

Q is way too easy to land.

You and me live in two different worlds... I've been finding it quite a challenge landing Q's on folks who pay some attention in lane and respect Soraka's Q. Usually i resort to hitting marksmen when they are stuck in auto animation trying to CS, but even then competent enemy supports can punish you for it...

I find part of the unreliability, is that it's effectively a delayed AoE attack which can easily be walked out of. (I would have better luck landing skillshots. Those usually get easier at closer range.)

For me, Raka feels like she's in this weird state of limbo. She doesn't have the reliability of her spells, and the lack of self peel and mobility, makes it dangerous for her to be in close range. Yet her kit isn't particularly healthy, if allowed to work passively at long range.

The only way I could make her work is pairing her with an ADC who A) is already a bully, who I can enable with my heals. Or B) has a little bit of their own CC which can help me sure shot my abilities.
