Why In Game Chat Is Bad For the Game. We Should Fix This.
I know that people will say that you need chat to play strategic and set up plays, but on the other end of the spectrum, in game chat is the #1 cause of toxic behavior in LoL. If there was no chat there would be next to no toxic players in the game. Everyone knows that around 99% of toxic outbursts start in chat. Someone gets set off and then they choose to rage in chat. Yes, you can just hit that ignore button, but that doesn't matter if your other teammates don't choice to ignore them as well. The game I had just played, our top laner had an "episode" after losing lane and chose to rage at anyone and everyone in the chat. Even tho I put him on ignore right away, for the rest of the game, the chat was filled with my team shouting back at him. At this point there is nothing you can do or say to stop them and you can just see the game falling apart because everyone is raging in chat, over one player's bad play that set him off. Now, if there was no chat in the game, this would never happen ever. He might be salty that he lost his lane, and he might even play worse because of it, but you won't have the rest of your team playing bad because of it.
On the other hand you can use chat to plan out and make plays. Tell me tho, how often does this actually happen compared to someone using chat to rage? From my experience in solo que, I find it to be about 1:10. Maybe at higher elos it is used for good more often, but lower tier, it is almost never used to make plays. There is usually nothing that can be said in chat that can't be implemented with pings or some kind of time stamp button. If Riot could find a way to make emotes and pings for more game actions, like time stamps, or direction pings, we would not even need the chat. With the chat removed, you remove the toxic behavior from the game almost completely.
I'm sure that not everyone will agree with me on this, but I feel that this would change the game for the better. I know some people feel strongly about being able to chat in game, but if you can remove a HUGE problem like toxicity from the game at the cost of not being able to chit chat in game, I find this to be a good sacrifice. If you are talking in game, you are not concentrating on the game anyway, I find it to be counter intuitive. You would always have the option of chatting before and after the game. Please input your opinions. I feel like this would be really really good for the game, but I want to also hear why it may not be good. Maybe there is something I have missed.
Edit: Also I thought maybe if people aren't on board for removing the chat from game, another option could be changing chat restrictions into chat removals. It only takes one sentence or outburst to put a team on tilt. Maybe removing the chat completely from toxic players could fix this. This way the good behaved players would still have the option of chatting in game.
