Idea for possible Sona Rework

I think it might be really cool if Sona were taken in a Heimerdinger or Karma direction with her ultimate so that pressing R changes what her next ability does.

R+Q? Give her Q Creshendo's current functionality and stun all the targets it hits (Pressing R turns her Q into what Creshendo currently is, or maybe make it so that it stuns all enemies within the radius of her aura so it would give her some incentive to dive into the enemy team for the sake of a play)

R+W? Increase her aura's effective range, buff shield strength and gives everyone around her some crazy health regen or maybe some bonus armor + MR (Maybe make it so Sona herself doesn't benefit from the heal effect so that the enemy could easily focus her down first and cancel out her healing her entire team)

R+E? We'd be talking Zilean levels of movespeed buffs here. Turn Sona's ult into a bit of a Sivir ult so she becomes much better at engaging (I'm worried this one might overload her kit a bit, so maybe give it a bit of a Righteous Glory effect where it only works when running towards enemies? I'm open to suggestions on this one)

What do you guys think about this, does it sound like a good idea? I think this would really add some depth to her kit and give the balance team much more room to work with when tweaking her. Personally I don't play Sona very often because I find her to be a bit too simple and I'm never very sure what team comps she's a good pick into, so if anyone reading this is a Sona main then please tell me what you think.

So basically Karma 2.0 :/

I think there's a way to make her unique without feeling similar to other champions.

Try the other way around. Using Q/W/E before ult changes the effect on it depending on what song was last used. It could maybe even be a combination of songs (abilities).

For example: Q before ult - ult deals damage in a target direction and increases damage taken by enemies W before ult - ult creates a protective barrier around Sona for 2 seconds (windwall type spell) E before ult - ult channels an aoe around Sona where enemies are stunned for 2-3 seconds

I kinda like your idea, but I have to disagree on the windwall type ability on her W, that might end up being too good and Sona would completely replace Braum as the shield character.

That's not ENTIRELY unique btw, that's the same mechanic LeBlanc has on her ult :)

Leblanc's ult mimics her spells. My suggestion would only enhance the ult in different ways depending on which basic ability was cast :P

I think the windwall effect would be unique enough from other champions' abilities if it was covering all sides and lasted only max of 2 seconds. The cooldown is also a huge factor. If the cd was what it currently is (minimum of 60 sec), I can't see it being too overwhelming especially since she would deny the use of other versions of the ult.

Oh I was referring to the "what it does is based off the last ability you used" mechanic. And I disagree, I think it would be pretty overpowered on her kit. 2 seconds is all it takes to stop your enemies most damaging projectiles if she times it right, and coupled with the fact that she can already heal, shield, and speed boost?

Not to mention the other 2 ult abilities you suggested seem to do less in comparison, so the ability would either have to have a long cooldown that might not justify using the other two, or a short cooldown to the point where you could spam it.

I think all of the choices would have their uses and all of them could have a huge impact. Her basic abilities might however need some changes as well.

If the windwall idea seems too overwhelming, maybe the ult W could reduce incoming damage by x% for few seconds.

Don't get me wrong though, I really like the idea of a 360 degree projectile shield, but I just don't think Sona is the champion for it. I like where you're going with the damage reduction idea, but that just seems a bit underwhelming in comparison to the other two now. What if she just gave herself and the nearest ally spellshields?

It really depends on how strong the damage reduction would be. 70% damage reduction for 2 seconds in an aoe area around Sona could feel and be powerful. It could be used to negate the enemy burst quite effectively especially if used right after using W.

I'm not sure how I feel about spellshields.

Yeah but a large amount of damage reduction doesn't really fit her kit at all though. Sonas meant to be a squishy support, and making her kinda tanky like that seems completely random thematically. I mean, if I wanted a support that could heal me and take a ton of damage, I'd probably go with Alistar. Thematically, Sona is someone who sticks by her allies and buffs them, but damage reduction for the entire team around her? Even if it only lasts 2 seconds, I'm not too sure how I feel about that one. I mean, that has the potential to be the biggest middle finger in the game to teams that use things like Karthus or Ziggs ult to initiate a teamfight. Say one of those two ults at the start of a fight to get your team low so they can try and engage on you, only to have that damage reduced by that much. I mean, I'd be ok with it if it was a smaller number like 20-30%, but 70% seems way too overkill. I mean, you could probably make the same argument for Bard's ultimate doing the same thing if he ults his entire team before a Zigg's bomb or Karthus ult, but at least the stasis effect gives the other team a chance to better position themselves during that time.

I was thinking spellshield instead because it was along the same lines as your original suggestion defensively, but not to the point where she can protect her entire team from something like say an Ezreal ult for example. Say Ez gets an ult off on your entire team and Sona just defends herself and 1 other person from it, instead of a projectile shield stopping it from doing damage to everyone behind her as well.

There's a lot of champions that can already mess up initiation damage tools such as Karthus' or Ziggs' ult. For example Karma's mantra shield which is on a relatively short cooldown.

The thing is that 2 seconds is just enough to block one or two spells before the enemy realizes they shouldn't use their burst until the effect ends. The intention in my suggestion was that Sona has to channel for the duration so the aoe is stationary and the players have to stay close to Sona which again makes them vulnerable to aoe cc.

I honestly think Sona is just fine the way she is. I'm not seeing why everyone insists she needs yet another rework.

I actually miss her persistent auras.
