Is it me or is Vladimir now completely unplayable?

If you build him full glass cannon, he's way too fragile and only does a ton of damage when he's ahead (and when ahead, another traditional mage glass cannon like Viktor for example has more range and damage with just a bit of decent skillshot accuracy). As a glass cannon, his safety in the form of the sustain and pool is largely mitigated by how close to the front line he has to be. Most of his lane match-ups don't allow this glass cannon form to really snowball except for really poor laning from the enemy.

If you go tank, he does absolutely no damage.

If you go in the middle of the road with a Spirit Visage and some damage, you find that yes he can be alive and the last one standing but his team is dead because he doesn't deal enough damage and then he just dies. Either that or you go in and can't do much because E feels pitifully weak now.

It just feels like even if you wanted a champ that scales into a powerful late game, you've got better options Ahri Viktor Ziggs

Is it me or does this champ no longer seem very good?

**tldr; ** if you want AP burst or poke damage, there are better options. If you want a "safe" laner, there are better options. If you want a pseudo-tank that deals good damage, there also seem to be better options (and it doesn't make sense for a mid to be a pseudo tank anyways). If you want a strong late scaling champs, there are just better options.

So why pick him now?

He's not unplayable at all lol.

item 3001 item 3157 item 3158 item 3116 item 3089 item 3135

1 shot carries, still feel tanky.

**He has a 1.0 AP ratio on E. **

That means every 3 seconds you're throwing out ~187% (Q averaged) of your AP on someone with EQ. Your ult brings that to 205%, then pops for another 70%.

I've had no problems with him. You just have to play like a complete bitch early game, just like pre-rework. The only thing that sucks is the W CD nerf late game and MS nerf.

I pick Vlad in order to have the ability to dive on carries, instantly blow them up, and survive to continue wreaking havoc. No other champion can do that like Vlad.

Stormraiders?

or Strength of Ages?

Also, is the Rylais before Rabadon?

WoonStruck1 votes

I run Stormraider's now. Strength of the Ages simply doesn't offer enough anymore, and its also to get used to its removal with season 7.

Build order depends on match-up and what you need.

Almost always Rylai's before Rabadon. If I get a kill early, I grab a large rod so even D-shield+Cowl doesn't stop your damage, plus you heal a massive amount from it and can turn ganks around 2v1; early Rylai's is always nice too. Otherwise, Ionian+codex.

I wouldn't get stuck on protobelt. Its getting gutted next season.

Do you rush the 2 CDR defensive items back to back to try to get to 40% as fast as possible?

Or is it better to do 1 of them and then get Rylais in between?

WoonStruck1 votes

If I have a significant lead, no, I go with Rylai's. This stops melees from all-inning you during their mid-game so you can keep pressure and even draw jungle aggro for your team, sometimes even getting doubles 2v1.

If I'm not significantly ahead, I go Ionian->codex->defensive component needed->Abyssal or Zhonya's, then another codex, and head in to Rylai's, finishing whichever between abyssal/zhonya's you didn't finish earlier. Void staff immediately after if people are building MR. Otherwise, Deathcap.

Keep in mind that you should have 10% CDR in your runepage somewhere. I run full AP/HP/CDR per level. The HP/CDR are standard, and the AP/level helps immensely when you just have to soak exp, or when you're forced to build mostly components for defense/cdr. Also helps with snowballing too.

If you run a runepage like mine, HP/lvl yellows, 2 CDR/lvl quints, rest AP/level. Season 7 might make magic pen reds worth again, since abyssal is getting changed from MR reduction to 10% magic damage increase.

Oh, and Ghost/Flash no matter which lane. You can replace ghost or flash with exhaust if you don't like going against xin, riven, irelia, or yasuo though.

I see...

Is LB/Fizz one of those matchups that require a Spirit Visage to function? =(

Or do you just amp up the passive factor and stay super close to tower?

I hate the match up so much...

Also, do you prefer 12/18/0 or 0/18/12?

WoonStruck1 votes

No, Fizz/LB is pretty easy. Start boots+pots, grab Negatron+Refillable when you back. At that point, you can either finish Abyssal to trade hard with them when they try to harass/all-in, or you can start building Rylai's so you can sustain better.

Match-ups you'd need SV to function in are like Azir, Sol, Brand, etc if they're really aggressive about punishing your range.

If there's a LOT of magic damage on their team, you can even go Abyssal+SV instead of opting for Zhonya's. But this is really only worth if their ADC is the only physical damage threat. Blow them up first and there's no problem, though.

I prefer 12/18/0, but 0/18/12 can be good if you REALLY need the flash/ghost up-time. Only go X/X/12 on Vlad if you're going ghost+flash with Ionian and you need that extra 15% uptime..

Ah I see...

I might try it.

Should it be 0/18/12 or 12/18/0? How good is runic armor?

WoonStruck1 votes

Runic Armor is alright, but its honestly better to get the 10% bonus damage from Ferocity most of the time.

When I die, its almost never because I didn't heal enough. Its because I didn't get my Q off quickly enough for a heal/to kill them, or because I made a huge mistake I wouldn't turn around either way.

AP build ends up with more MR, heals more, and only has ~500 less HP than tank builds. It'll be even more in favor of AP after season 7 rolls around. Tank build's damage is getting dropped by a TON, not to mention 300 less HP.

Definitely a good choice to drop it and every aspect of it. Especially in overloaded damage metas.

I wouldn't say he's unplayable. He has specific matchups he excels at, like Malphite and Poppy. But he's very niche and needs the right team comp to do well. Riot doesn't seem to know what they want from Vlad, one minute he's supposed to be this tanky AP bruiser but then they change it so he has to be a squishy mage. And they removed his core item that allowed him to function properly. So I would say Vlad has a bit of a identity crisis right now. Like you said, there are better options than Vlad in pretty much every circumstance so he's not worth picking up since he's so team reliant.

FYI, the .1 AP ratio buff to his heal makes him heal more than with WotA early game, and throughout the rest. You just have to build AP.

15% of your damage is much less than 10% AP when you're going full AP, since none of his ratios pre-rework were 1.0 or higher. Throughout the game, WotA only added ~180 to his healing every 3 seconds. Late game it was a setback, even.

If anything it just made WotA+SV 'feel' good, even though you'd do jack shit for damage if you went SV, unless you had a HUGE lead. After SV got nerfed to 10% CDR, it became a bad item on Vlad.

Then they made him scale with HP. Then it was good again. Then they nerfed that by 40%, and gave a massive buff to his AP ratios. It is now a bad item again unless you absolutely require it to lane in a specific match-up, which pretty much only applies to mid.

WoonStruck1 votes

Also, because most people suck at him, expect Vlad buffs at some point.

Hopefully its reverting base HP, MS, and W CD. Would basically make him like pre-rework again.

that is indeed good news
