Rengar isn't a one trick pony

So I understand Rengar has made a come back of late, mainly his one shotting assassin style of gameplay, and I also get that it is quite strong mainly in lower elos. But that does not mean that's the only thing he does!

I enjoy playing bruiser and tank Rengar, always have and always will, and he's still quite potent with these kinds of builds, just a different playstyle. What I find infuriating is dealing with simple minded individuals who refuse to admit champs have different kinds of effective build paths! Yes when I get fed and dominate the early game cause I know how to fucking jungle and still build bruiser/tank I get a lot of "I HAD NO IDEA HE COULD DO THAT!" Which can be satisfying, but the problem is that it's a double edged sword. Like, if I'm behind for any number of reasons or even something as simple as the enemy team comp makes assassin Rengar nigh unplayable, and I build tankier to deal with that particular game even my own damn teammates cry and moan about me not being an assassin!

I've even been goofing around in normals, with a build like item 1412 item 3053 item 3025 and some other tank items, still kill the enemy adc 1v1, and they'll then start harassing me in all chat cause my build is "so bad." I can only laugh at them and keep killing them, but it's still irritating that there are so many people now who think Rengar MUST be an assassin.

Open your eyes people, Rengar has many different options, and sometimes the assassin route just isn't the best choice.

Literally full tank Rengar can still combo an adc and then be useful for teamfighting, BUT he isn't nearly as good in the early and mid game portion of the game. Typical build could look like this: Rengar summoner 4 summoner 3 item 3111 item 3071 item 3065 item 3742

Don't get me wrong though. Rengar IS good this way, BUT he is better as a 1shot assassin.

Most of the time.

I mean yes in soloQ it's almost always easier to carry as a 1shot assassin, but on occasion when you first pick Rengar a lot of the time the enemy team will counter pick against him as if he were a squishy assassin. This makes it very easy to build him tankier and soak up all their wet-noodle damage and loads of cc while still remaining a damage threat.

Again, that is only some of the time, but it does happen lol

What makes him an assassin is his pattern of play, not his item build.

While you don't one shot, you can still kill squishies very quickly with just a Ghostblade and one other damage item. My build as of late has been something like this:

Rengar item 3748 item 3142 item 3143 item 3065 item 3078 item 3111

Without much tuning, this build still one shots and you don't have to suicide burst. You are very relevant in team fights.

On top of that, the way his abilities work, he actually has really bad sustained damage in an even fight. However, in a situation where he's running you down, getting to stack abilities for free, and kill you quickly when you cant fight back, he excels.

It's almost like he's an assassin and looks for unfair fights/easy kills because assassins can't fight duelists on even footing.

Someone choosing to get defense so they aren't as squishy doesn't make Rengar not an assassin.

Tank rengar's playstyle is the same as his full damage playstyle, only difference is you're built more for fighting rather than 1-shotting

Actually no, the playstyle is quite different! As an assassin Rengar you wait, you either want your team to start a fight so you can pop out in the middle of the chaos or you want to find a squishy target on their own or at least not right next to another strong enemy/their whole team.

Where as on the other hand as Bruiser/tank Rengar you're typically the one starting the fights, sure a lot of the time waiting for a teamfight to break out so you can run in with your ult is the best course of action still, and you can definitely still essentially "one-shot" squishies who are out on their own (even though you need a bit more distance from their teammates in this case), but forcing fights where you jump in and either kill the enemy carry or at least force them back out of a fight so they can't fully participate with your team following you in as you soak up the damage and cc or even pulling them back into your team. You also have much more varied ability priorities.

So you see it's generally the same goal in mind for all his playstyles, but the ways you go about it and the ways in which you coordinate with your team are quite different.

I can see where you're going, i used to main rengar and still enjoy playing him from time to time, and for me his builds never really changed the playstyle. I probably just didn't realize it because i was so used to how i played rengar.

The champion isnt a 1 trick-pony, typically its the players who main him. There are many people who make high elo with the reputation of being a 1trickpony. Btw if you want a good tank rengar build, rush these 2 items: item 3074 item 3071 as damage first which can help you start your snowball, then you can transition into tank 3rd item with item 3065 oritem 3742 while doing so swap your item 3074 for item 3748

I've been doing this for my last few rengar games and its been really solid. Your finished build should be something like so: item 3748 item 3111 item 3071 item 3065 item 3742 with your 6th item being 1 of these:item 3026 item 3053 item 3083 item 3143 item 3156 item 3075 depending on what you need. :)

EXACTLY! That's why it's so irritating when people get abusive towards me for not going full assassin Rengar, because in their minds that's the ONLY way to play him. They just don't understand, and Rengar is possibly one of the best examples of a champ who can perform in multiple roles, it's just ironic! lol

For solo Q full assassin has been proven to be the build build for him.. However, as a rengar main, i try my best to expand my teams uses beyond just being an assassin..
