Theoretically anyways...

Not how he turns out in practice.

Okay, so currently, I don't think Lee Sin has any significant weaknesses (he has an answer to every situation), but in an ideal world, here's what I think he should be weak at:

  • Sustain. As a high-intensity champion, Lee Sin should have a limited amount of "strikes" while out in the field before he should be forced to back. Everything about him encourages him to dive in, kick his target's butt (sometimes literally) and make a clean exit. He also has several tools to avoid or mitigate damage (his shield, his dashes and his get-away-from-me kick), which he should be putting to full use. If he messes up and takes too much damage, that damage should stick. His current lifesteal/spellvamp steroid messes that up by allowing him to heal back up extremely quickly no matter how much pain his opponents inflict on him, and I think his sustain should be slashed in favor of, say, a better shield (which would allow him to block more damage and stay healthier when he uses it right).
  • Recovery after burst. Lee starts out with twice as many abilities as anyone else, and can use them all in pretty much one go. Ideally, he should have to choose between spacing out his abilities in order to make the most of his energy restoration, or blowing everything at once and having few options afterwards, but currently the difference is not as pronounced as it should be. Lee can currently dive his opponent, blow all of his abilities, and still always have enough energy to dash out of a fight whenever he wants (one of the biggest reasons why people dislike him). Escaping a fight should be a larger investment, and one Lee can't just make regardless of how many abilities he's used already.
  • Combat outside of using spells. Lee's abilities are massively powerful, and are the best and most interesting part of him. When Lee's abilities are up, you should be scared because he could make massive plays at any moment, but conversely when his spells are on cooldown, that should be your window of opportunity to make him pay. As an AD champion, Lee needs to blend autoattacks in between spellcasts, but he should only be doing so to further enable future use of his abilities, and not to deal any major part of his damage. Effectively, he should be the weakest AD champion around when just autoattacking. His AS steroid, however, goes against this, and makes him a threat in the early game even when his abilities are on cooldown. I think Lee could afford to have even stronger or more frequent spellcasts if he lost his AS steroid and became a truly weak autoattacker.

I agree with this. Him being an ability based champion is fine, what isn't fine is that after his 6/7 abilities are on cd you still are safe as he can still out auto attack a decent portion of other ad champs to death.

i personaly would add his powercurve lee starts as a champion with loads of potent tools which offer him realy big amount of power as a drawback his tools shouldnt scale into late game

well he suffers from the same problem that elise does, he covers all the bases with his kit when elise was hammered right when she became a thing, riot quickly learned that they cant do the same with lee sin

the problem was that riot wanted to rework elise into a champion with a clear purpose, but when they asked players about the things that they felt elise is good at they got rekt every player that played elise loved her for the same reason, she was strong in every situation and was always impactfull, no matter the teamcomp and score, aka she did everything good and wasalways able to play to enemy weaknesses so riot didnt get an answer and couldnt realy find away to rework her that would satisfy ppl

so basicaly the weaknesses that lee should "theoreticaly " have is him falling off late game

but pros are pros and they made insec kick honestly if we would take this one technique from lee by simply forcing interwals beetwen skillcasts (at least 0,5 second), lee would be the bottom of trash tier since his numbers realy fall off quite hard

In my opinion Lee Sin should be forced to choose between being tanky and dealing damage. I'm actually pretty fine with Lee Sin's high bonus AD ratios, but his base damages on his abilities are too high. A tank should not hit 600 with literally 0 AD items. A tank should not deal 340 damage with a single spell. I'm fine with Lee Sin getting some compensation in the ratios department, but he definitely should have to choose between being tanky and dealing damage. This would also take not only his solo queue viability, but his competitive dominance as well, down a notch.

BraveryBeyond2 votes

Theoretically speaking, points #2 and #3 are supposed to be his weaknesses. His kit even reflects this all in his passive. After every ability, you gain 15 energy off your next two attacks (30 total). His passive is supposed to tie into a mentality of either trading blows and spacing your abilities out so you can regain energy to keep up a steady pace, or going all-in but blowing your entire kit with no safe way out. In turn, this should lead to having poor auto-attack capability and needing to weave the two together for the most damage output in a fight. I see Lee as a champion that should theoretically be very weak to burst champions that can punish his all-ins or force him back in a quick exchange, but be very strong against sustained damage and be able to slowly keep a drawn out fight in his advantage before going all-in and blowing his load.

The problem stems from a multitude of issues. For one, Safeguard's cost is too low. Lee Sin's entire rotation costs him 160 energy total (Q costs 50 then 30, E costs 50 then 30 and R costs nothing) so one auto-attack between three abilities will get you past the threshold of 50 energy to cast W and get out of the fight. On top of this, having an attack speed steroid on the passive doesn't help matters. Being able to get that energy back faster once you've gone all in certainly helps keep Lee's costs negligible at best.

Possible solutions? Maybe reserving the order of Safeguard and Iron Will. If Lee's dash was on the second cast it would bump his safety up to a total cost of 80 energy. I'm not sure how much it would effect his rotation to have his lifesteal/spellvamp on the first 50 energy, though, so numbers might need to be messed with a bit. You could also just increase the total cost of having to cast Safeguard. Another solutions would be to remove the 40% attack speed buff from his passive so that you need to invest in the energy sustain by getting an item that would weaken other aspects you would focus on when building items.

Overall, I think Riot just has other fires they want to put out before tackling Lee Sin. He's a very sensitive topic, being the culmination of many years of development as well as having an entire story line and in-game event revolving around him.

Blindness. He should play the whole game with the same kind of vision Rek'Sai has when burrowed. Congrats, Lee is now balanced.

Klatn Yelox3 votes

There was a joke post a few months ago that said "Please list a gamebreaking nerf to your most hated champ" well, something along those lines. My reply was this.

"Lee Sin is now blind, and generates no vision on his own."

Not very many people understood this, but I think it would be great. It works like this. Lee Sin players can still see anywhere the team has vision. They don't generate champion vision, so they can't necesarily see around them. In order to start camps, they have to use vision granting abilities. Taking damage reveals the source of the damage for 5 seconds, so enemies can't just kill him while he can't see.

In light of Rek'Sai, I would now add that he see's enemies close to him they same/similar to Rek'Sai. This would help lower him, without eliminating gank power.

Dark Topline19 votes

Don't take my word on this because I don't play Lee Sin or the jungle in general, but from what I've heard, Lee Sin falls apart pretty hard late game. He's a strong champion early game and won't contribute much if the game drags on into a 50 minute game.

I'd say his weakness are team-fights as if doesn't contribute much and it's rather hard landing your "q" on the right enemy champion and making a noticeable difference for your team.

5G8Nri0B5410 votes

I'm not too sure about the weak teamfight thing. I guess I can sort of see it, but on the other hand, his kit offers quite a bit of valuable utility that he'll always be a thing, that how I feel anyways.

I Main Swain2 votes

he falls apart late game IF you build him tank. however, if you build him bruiser or heavens forbid assassin you can beat almost anybody 1v1 late game

imo most of his weaknesses almost entirely depend on how the player plays him.

Teridax685 votes

While Lee Sin does tend to build into a bruiser late game and fall off in damage as a result (and even then, his full late-game burst is 1140 (+ 480% bonus AD) (+ 8% target's missing health), which is one of the better bursts and scalings around for an AD champion and mitigated only by the fact that his E doesn't benefit from armor penetration), in the hands of high-level players he still contributes utility that is useful at all stages of the game. An Insec kick alone can determine the outcome of a teamfight in the same way as a Blitzcrank grab, for example. Even when not used to kick the carry into your own team, Lee's ult also works as an AoE knockup that you can use to peel enemies away from your team's VIPs, and his AoE slow still remains relevant (it's a bit less effective than its values suggest, though, due to it decaying over its duration). He may not have the best late game out of any champion (far from it), but some parts of his kit just don't fall off at all, no matter how far the game goes (in fact, his ult becomes more important as the game goes on, due to its ability to reposition key targets).

We are talking about high level play. Which is a level that none us us will ever achieve. Have any of us actually seen a Lee pull off a successful insec in normals or bronze? All these QQ threads are complaining about how Lee looks when he is played by the top .5% of players. How is what we see on a challenger stream even relevant to how the game will play out for us?

Pro play is the only reasonable way to measure balance. You can't get useful data out of bad players, because their faults are a bigger reason for failure than their champion picks. Riot just happens to not actually give a shit about balance, as evidenced by the pathetic champion diversity the game has had in pro play for years. THEORETICALLY

His weakness is that only one team can have him in a Draft game.

SexyTaylorSwift9 votes

THEORETICALLY, his main weakness is people missing the skill shot sonic thingy and letting you get away. It is only theoretically because you can dodge 17 of them, and with the low CD on it, still get hit by one stray one and die to his full tank still 100-0 burst you build.

5G8Nri0B547 votes

So theoretically, Lee Sin's weakness is that he's supposed to be completely reliant on landing his Q's...

But in practice, missing his Q's don't mean jack due to it's low CD and negligible energy cost?

Champion Skin6 votes

Not to mention he can use his W (+ ward or a friendly minion/champion) to make it almost impossible to miss Q or avoid needing to hit it in the first place

Uiru9 votes

He has a very fast low telegraph moderately low cooldown effectively free skillshot that can miss.

Also, the myth of a guaranteed lategame persists. Perhaps when all ten champions are level 18 with full builds, he is less damagey than the carries and less tanky than the tanks. The issue is that at every single point up until that point, he still deals absurd damage building tanky and he still never dies when building damage. This is mostly due to his INSANE mobility (which is not something that ever falls off). If you fuck up an engage with Lee Sin you can ward jump over a wall or to a minion, you can dragon kick the nearest champ and scatter them, and you have a slow and a shield to keep yourself alive while you wait for your engage to come off cooldown (won't be long) and then you have even more options because hey, it's also an escape. Oh, and you have attack speed steroids and free lifesteal/spellvamp, because why the fuck not, right? (Compare this to what happens when, say, Diana fucks up an engage.)

One single drop of awareness and Lee Sin never dies. Whether or not you kill him has nothing to do with your skill and everything to do with his. He makes every decision, and if he makes the wrong one he has a LIST of get out of jail free cards to fall back on. You can do everything right and the outcome depends on Lee Sin making MULTIPLE mistakes. That is the biggest problem (but far from the only one).

Are there bad Lee Sins? Obviously. People still don't seem to understand that not dying is relatively easy and is also the most important skill in the game. Going 1v3 for the kill and dying getting it is never wise. Having the KDA is important mentality is going to cause you to feed and lose games regardless of how mindbogglingly huge your safety net is.

As for the LC$ Big Play$ which is keeping the balance team from doing their jobs and fixing this nonsense, it'd be great if every champion had the list of options Lee Sin has. Thing is, that means the rework team now has 122 more things to do.

Remove ward jumping (yeah, fuck you too Kat), remove the lifesteal, remove the execute damage. Yup, like a fish. Anyone who thinks Lee Sin is anything other than an overpowered joke is as blind as he is, and getting him in line with other champs only LOOKS like he's being destroyed because he is so far above everyone and everything else. ~Uiru

Being outscaled by pretty much everyone.

Cale01734 votes

Two of his abilities deal 1.0 and 2.0 AD scalings. He isn't getting outscaled by everyone. In fact with numbers like that he's outscaling most top or jungle champs.

Champion Skin6 votes

His passive also gives him 40% bonus attack speed

AtheosisX3 votes

Except that isn't what happens. He does get outscaled by a lot of champs. Having high AD ratios is hardly all there is to scaling.

Cale0179 votes

That's exactly what having high AD ratios means. If two champions with equal AD are put side to side, the one with better ratios is outscaling the one without. The only reason he appears to be outscaled by other melee champs is that a Lee Sin will usually start building tank after his first one or two damage items. That's why his high AD scaling keeps him relevant in the early and mid game but seems to fall off in the late when other melees have built much more AD than he has.

Cale01711 votes

To put it another way, less is more on Lee Sin. If you put, say, a Shyvana and a Lee Sin both with a Hydra, Lee Sin is doing more damage from how much more he's getting out of that same 75 AD compared to the Shyvana. As a result while the Shyvana has to build another item, assume it's a BotRK, Lee Sin builds a Randhin's Omen. With a second damage item, Shyvana is now dealing comparable damage to the Lee Sin who has only one damage item, but she doesn't have as much defense built up so while they're on about even ground heading into the mid game in terms of damage, the Lee Sin has the upper hand as he's dealing similar damage but can continue doing so much longer due to the damage mitigation from the Randuin's Omen.

Fast forward to the late game, and Shyvana, after building her own Randuin's Omen, is now significantly more durable and has decided to build a Maw of Malmortius. Lee Sin meanwhile has built two more tank items to Shyvana's one tank and one MR/AD item with a Spirit Visage and a Banshee's Veil. The Shy Ana and the Lee Sin are almost evenly matched in terms of armor, with the slight edge to Shyvana, and Lee Sin has slightly more MR. However, with three damage items to Lee Sin's one Hydra, one of which gives her more AD depending on how low her life is dropping, Shyvana has the edge in damage as well as armor while Lee Sin has lost his lead in damage potential in favor of much more health from the additional two health items he has.

At the end of the match Lee Sin has built a Warmog's, trying to last longer in teamfights where he loses his ability to target single specific champions as easily, while Shyvana has also built a Warmog's so she can wade through teamfights in dragon form with relative impunity. At this stage of the game Shyvana is doing much more damage because she is on about equal footing with Lee Sin, minus about 600 health or so, in terms of durability due to the armor/MR she has above him in dragon form, but is dealing a considerable amount more damage while absorbing more than enough to survive.

In this manner it appears that Lee Sin has fallen off in terms of damage while Shyvana is lasting about as long in teamfights, and is also providing a much wider array of damage through AoE abilities, rapid Hydra procs, and bursts from her E marked targets.

However, should Lee Sin and Shyvana both build nothing but damage items ending up at, just a random number, 300 AD at the end of the match, Lee Sin is hitting much harder. His ult is dealing 1200 damage alone, and his attack speed after using abilities is putting out several more hundred over the course of the next moment. Shyvana meanwhile lacks high damage single target abilities, and the best she has is her AA > Q which will apply about 1000 damage between her first auto attack and the Q hitting twice for bonus damage. This doesn't take into account Lee Sin's other high scaling abilities, and actives from the items each have built have no impact on their ability scalings.

To simplify the concept, a straight damage Lee Sin outscales the straight damage Shyvana. A Lee Sin who builds as a fighter will eventually lose his edge, and his function, during teamfights once other fighters catch up in terms of damage but can last about as long while dealing damage that isn't focused to single targets.

MrBuffington21 votes

At least in theory:

It's bonus AD, and Lee Sin has to start building tanky at some point to stay relevant. Usually Lee gets his jungle item, sightstone, and maybe one intermediate attack item (ie. Hexdrinker, which is also sort of a tank item) before going full tank (this is professional play, people do all kinds of stupid stuff in yoloqueue). When people say Lee Sin falls off late game, it's more to do with the fact that his build doesn't allow him to deal as much damage as a carry, while also not being a true tank. Lee Sin derives most of his utility from his kit, and less from his items, and in that sense he's not a late game champion since he isn't as reliant on items as say, and ADC. Compare him to a more tank/utility-focused jungler like J4, or a more damage focused jungler like Kha'Zix; half of Lee Sin's utility comes from his damage, since he doesn't have low cooldown AoE hard CC like J4, at the same time, Lee Sin doesn't have the damage potential of Kha'Zix, who is more of a late game champion and benefits a lot more from items and levels than Lee Sin does. Lee Sin is sort of a hybrid where he's able to provide some damage like Kha, and some utility like J4, while not being as good at either. At least in theory.

EDIT: imo this is actually why Lee Sin, Orianna, Thresh, arguably Lucian, have been such consistent picks in professional play; it's because they are incredibly flexible and offer a ton of utility and therefore can fit with a lot of different team compositions. In some cases, though, they aren't as stand-out as other champions; for example, Orianna does a ton of damage, yes, but she doesn't exactly one-shot someone as quickly as say, Veigar or Brand. The reason she often gets picked over these two is because she isn't as vulnerable due to her CC and shield; professional players are perfectly capable of playing around her comparatively less damage. These champions are less prone to rising and falling with the meta because if one aspect of their kit is less emphasized, they still have other areas where they can contribute to their team. If tanky, utility junglers become the meta, well, Lee Sin can still be decently tanky, but he's not J4. If damage junglers become the meta, Lee Sin can also deal decent damage, but he's not Kha. If you need vision control and counter jungling, Lee Sin can also do that pretty well, but he's not Nunu. At least in theory.

Erronius8 votes

The theory that he "falls off late" is completely false.

-Mobility is strong no matter what point in the game you're at.

-Percent missing health executes only become stronger as the game goes on, taking larger amounts of HP as the enemy's health pool increases.

-AoE knockups/single target knockbacks are ridiculously good no matter how you look at it.

The only thing that "falls off" is his shield, because it only blocks 200 damage, the free 25% lifesteal and spell vamp is however incredibly unnecessary, and more than makes up for the weak shield.

But here's the thing: The shield should be weak. It's a dash, and a shield.

He gets free lifesteal and spell vamp, he can reveal invisible targets, and he can dash to wards. His kit has too many extras. You could strip his kit of half the spell vamp and lifesteal, remove his invisibility detection, and remove his ability to ward-hop and he would still be a good champion that people would play.

Madra2 votes

Lee Sin builds a sight stone in the jungle and still outduels the enemy jungler. Sure, he may fall off late game, but he's spent thirty minutes capturing objectives, keeping his lanes safe and invading the enemy jungle. His only weakness is you can't be assured of playing him every draft game; and his kit is so stacked that Lee Sindrome is a real thing.

DHKany2 votes

Lategame is supposed to be his weakness.

Tbh I've only ever been in a handful of games where a snowballing lee sin really "fell off" towards the endgame. Usually he just ends up snowballing extremely hard (his ridiculously good AD ratios don't help that at all), and just becomes this hyper mobile, uncatchable nuisance that ends up with some of the best initiations in the game.

Solidair32 votes

His "weakness" is supposed to be that his lategame is awful. Late game his kit is only useful to reposition himself for a good ult. His damage really falls off, and he's not even really a good tank.

But yes, he DOES kind of do-it-all, and he was designed muchlike the old champs were. He is probably in need of an update.

This means you will deal with your combo 1263 physical damage, with 39% armor pen, and without factoring autoattacks, just by landing the first sonic wave.

Sure, it's not Yi level, but what more do you want from a jungler with his level of utility? That damage alone will already halve the carry health.

And, let's pray the PBE changes to warrior don't pass: that would bring the damage from 1263 to 1390.
