An idea for reworking Kassadin's Ultimate
I've been thinking about how Kassadin's ult could be changed to remedy his riftlimp without putting him over the top. Ultimately I think it comes down to the mechanics of his R needs to be changed. As proven over the years, an instant blink with a huge range and low cooldown is very problematic. It's impossible to balance because the spell is broken. Outside of mana gating there has never really been much counterplay to the ability either. So, I propose a new ability. Create a mechanic that is a hybrid of leblanc W and Lissandra E. It could be named something like "void gate." And function similarly to the live version with some differences.
For the spell. You would place a point which opens a gate where you can teleport to within 3 or 4 seconds and deal aoe damage. Similar to the current ability you would be able to cast it multiple times in short succession. However, each time you use rift gate the mana scales up and the range diminishes and the cooldown to regain the range and lower mana cost is still 20 seconds.
There are a few things that would balance this spell. First is that the ability would be telegraphed similar to Lissandra's claw. The gate opens at a location of your choosing, only being available to teleport to after 1 second and lasting 3 more seconds. Secondly, there would be a cast animation of .5 second that can be interrupted (the spell would be interrupted as well if CC'd near the end of the gate duration).
So to reveiw. -Sets a gate that you can teleport to after 1 second (telegraphed on cast) -Gate last 4 seconds total -0.5 second cast time to teleport (interruptable) -If CC'd at end of portal duration; cannot teleport (similar to lissandra) -Deals AOE dmg after teleporting(likely the same dmg numbers as live) -Mana cost scales up on consecutive uses (ex= 100m>200m>400m>800m or same as live values) -Range diminishes on uses (ex=750>650>550>450) -Damage scales up (same as live server) -Cooldown between uses 7s/5s/3s (after teleporting to gate) -Range/mana reset time 20s
Why this change? Well, I think it would be a more fun mechanic than just a simple blink. But unlike an instant blink it has more play and counter play to it. You could use it to zone enemies by telegraphing your potential movement. You could use it as sort of a zed disengage (set a gate, do damage, port back. You can do this on live as well). You can chase targets, but it loses effectiveness the more casts you use. You can use charged up stacks for damage output. You can be interrupted though or CC'd when your gate runs out.
Thematically I think this ability would fit perfectly with Kassadin. How cool would it be for him to use void gates to traverse the map and fights?
