Petition to keep Cassiopeia's lore but tweak it to fit with the Shuriman update

TowerChessPiece··30 votes·2,920 views

Cassiopeia's lore is fine. It needs not be changed. By changing it made her into a bland mary-sue character. She was relatable. She was a woman who screwed up and now suffers the consequences. Please Riot, leave her lore alone.

So far as I can tell Riot will be butchering Cassiopeia's Lore. I would be perfectly okay if they just expanded it to say the Cursed Sword she swore upon was Shuriman, but so far, Noxus has showed no signs of interest in the Shurima, so it makes no sense for Cassiopeia to have even been in the Shurima to get bitten by some statue in the first place.

AliceInMadness1 votes

The new lore states she got poisoned by a thomb guardian. Nasus' title is curator of the sands.

Did she really get to be a lamia/gorgon because she was bitten by a bipedal dog with arcane rabies of some sort?

AbiwonKenabi1 votes

Its kind of a huge jump to assume it was Nasus that did this, or anybody of Nasus' race. According to Nasus' lore, he is one of a kind here in Runeterra, being of another world (or at the very least, far into the past of this one). He's not really a tomb guardian necessarily.

Basilisk19912 votes

They're retconning his origin, he is from Shurima now, as is Renekton.

PlazmaMan1 votes

If you read Sivir's lore, you will see that after she decided to sever her ties with Noxus because of the Ionian attack, Noxus sent Cass (while she was still human) to ask Sivir for her assistance in robbing a tomb. Why that is is still a mystery, but it was definitely NOT Nasus who cursed her with a venomous bite, that's for sure. That's just ridiculous.

From what I am trying to understand, and completely taking a shot in the dark, is that Cass probably WANTED to be cursed with these venomous powers. Why else would she ask Sivir to assist her in getting there? This is all speculation though.

Tapu Fini2 votes

She wanted to go from a gorgeous noxian seductress, to a vile half-snake abomination? Her reflection and lore show how much she hates her serpentine self, and heavily imply how beautiful she used to be. Sticking to live, she weighed and balanced the secret she needed, and paid the price for going back on her promise. And it was just that, a price.

AliceInMadness1 votes

Its not for sure. Just because something soounds ridiculous does not mean its not possible, especially in a lore that has as many inconsistencies as league's( Lissandra's for example- why would she join the league when there are so many reasons for her not to?, how does original successor's line keep egzisting if she is killing them off? are Freljord queens teen moms?).

The only lore-approved other guardian is Skarner, who is an option too( probaby even more but dont roll out magic rabies just yet!)

sp4416 votes

Well, guess it doesn't matter anymore, since everything in the game is now 100% bullshit.

AbiwonKenabi2 votes

I know right? I first posted in this thread shortly before that particular....announcement shall we say? Makes sense why they wanted to squash out Skarner's people and involvement in Kalamanda...it never happened!

sp4414 votes

Well, on a more positive note, maybe that explains why the lore on the PBE are short excerpts, they're placeholders until they can get around to writing the full lore. I suspect that the new lore will start being effective next patch, with the next PBE cycle focusing heavily on revamping the lore.

I hope, at least... I'm still willing to give Riot the benefit of the doubt here that maybe they're going to turn this turd into gold... but if you wanna be Captain Doubto Skepticpants, I don't blame ya.

it did happen........tell me. after reading skarner current and the short excerpt riot showed, what do u think he is gaurding.........literally all riot did ws change the location

AbiwonKenabi1 votes

No no, you misunderstand me. There was A recent dev blog that spoke about League's direction in terms of lore. The top comment is:

So can we get a solid, 100% certain, that Summoners, the Institute, and all of that is no longer canon? This is nice and all, but it's only vague hints about what a lot of people want to hear. If you guys do indeed just want to start the narrative over, I completely stand by your choice to do so, but this transition so far is being handled somewhat awkwardly, and it'd be nice to know what really counts as "old lore" and "new lore".

A Rioter replies:

Good question! No, Summoners, the Fields of Justice and the Institute are not canon within the fictional world of Runeterra. In-game, players are still referred to as summoners - but summoners won't be part of the story

The Rioter later goes on to say the JoJ and similar things are still "to be enjoyed" but basically they aren't canon anymore. I commented earlier that I thought it was pretty obvious that Skarner is guarding his people, but the reason they changed it to be a "mystery" is because of this particular development.

HailFire Dragon1 votes

.....so what is the problem then.....you know the answer to what he is guarding, i know the answer to what he is gaurding. why is the new lore change for skarner a bad thing?

AbiwonKenabi1 votes

Skarner in his current form is an intelligent creature; he's a respected member of Brackern society and thus meant to scout to make sure Runeterra is now safe for his people. When he deems its not, he works together with the Institute of War to try and make it safe for his kind. He can be vicious, of course, but ultimately he's not just some "scary monster guardian rawr." That's tired and boring and not what currently Skarner is at all.

The new retcon makes the events that led up to Skarner's awakening...not exist. Sure he's still guarding his people, but there's a fundamental difference in the way Skarner approaches the rest of the world.

  • Current: Skarner was awoken by the events of Kalamanda. He sees its not yet safe for his people. He works with the political powers of Runeterra to try and make the world safer, so he can reunite with his kind.

  • New: Skarner is awakened...well we don't know if he was awakened....we don't know if he was ever asleep with his kind at all. Was he important to them? We don't know, we don't know what's still the same. But we do know that he just lashes out like a scary monster in order to protect his kind.

Do you see the difference? One version actually attempts a diplomatic solution that might actually make his people's return a reality. The other is just another scary monster.

HailFire Dragon1 votes

good point however there was a riot post in another thread that said the small excerpts were summaries to be added to the ingame client while a much larger more expansive(que new lore changes riot has been explaining) will be held in the website.

im 90% sure his awakened and all the stuff the tiny paragraph didnt tell us will be addressed.

i also personally see the summary as a look into Before Skarner decided to work with the political powers in order to see if its safe for his people. i dont know if skarner woke up then immediatly just simply left his species defeneless and started looking for who is in charge( tbh i wasnt that interested in lore regretably when the journals was a thing) but apparently at least for a while according to this lore skarner stayed guarding his people from treasure seekers, grave robbers and watnot until his presence attacking people he deemed a threat caught the attention of the higher government maybe the leaugue came in peace and made the first contact to skarner and thats when skarner decided to work with them.

AbiwonKenabi1 votes

Directly from Skarner's current lore:

When Skarner burst to the surface, he lashed out in anger and confusion. Reason eventually won out over his anger when he realized that the agents of the League who found him were simply functionaries. Skarner was invited to the Institute of War to share the brackern's story. In return, the summoners told him about the history that his kind had slept through.

There was a huge fight at Kalamanda, so League officials would have been right there from when he awoke.

Lol what. A woman who screwed up? She was a spy, got caught spying, and reaped the consequences. I like Cass's character, but she is not supposed to be a sympathetic character, lol.

Tapu Fini4 votes

Please don't do this shit riot. You're dumping all over your own lore for no good reason.

I'm not knocking your topic; I'm just being realistic.

If her VO is anything to go by I can safely assume that she is still Noxian , so I doubt they're doing anything TOO extreme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPeiyyV1Tg8

Have my signature. But i doubt it will be of any effect.

I guess they are cutting down the lore because they dont want to put in resources there anymore. Since they dont want to invest in it they are deleting the current plot to make it simple enough to not engcourage deeper character exploring and plot development( in the new plot General Du Coteau(her father and the reason she joined the league in the first place) is not even mentioned, so his dissapereance is not something they ever have to answer since she is the only champ lore wise directly connected with him( Kat is his daughter too but it was never really important).

"Plot is highly overrated" - official Riot designer's statement

What is funny is how Riot writers stated that they want less plot and more character but we are getting less in both departments.

iRetribution1 votes

Pretty sure that comment was originally in Game Informer about something unrelated to League. Could be wrong, Im almost positive Im not.

We are getting less of everything (Except esports)....

Tapu Fini2 votes

Regardless of what it's related to, at least one person higher up in the rioter totem pole doesn't give a crap about plot as long as people like the character.

They say they want people to love the characters. Some people love the lore attached to the characters, and I wish they'd get their heads out of their asses long enough to see that.

And yes, I'm mad at Riot for this lore bullshit they're pulling. I'd rather see lore go ignored than whatever the hell they're doing now.

AliceInMadness1 votes

It's sure-as-bananas related to league. The statement comes from a riot designer and of course he will apply that to his own game. He just states it as something true for games in general.

Btw I'm leaving my signature here (insert extremely well performed cursive signature that no body understands)

As the Cassiopeia roleplayer on the RP forums, I support this wholeheartedly. Don't destroy what I've spent a year coming to love and develop.

Helmight2 votes

I'll sign it, but my hopes of Riot actually doing something are nonexistent.

Mughi of Ruckus2 votes

It seems the only definite change to her lore is what caused her change, which, frankly, I'm on board with. The old manner always felt a bit flat to me. She was still a temptress. She was still a strategic asset. She still finds that life ruined. I'm a bit bothered that they didn't mention her being sisters with Katarina, but they have't squashed that bit yet. If they do, I'll be on board. I like the idea of them as sisters trying to hold together a house now propped up by their dangerous reputation but without the formal protections their father, the former head and general, gave them in a Noxus facing so much internal upheaval as Swain works to remake it from the inside. There are a lot of dynamics there to play with, but than, that interpretation of their sisterhodd is my own personal headcanon...and the topic of a fic I'm working on.

Come on, Riot! Hire me already!

how does changing the method she got turned make her a mary sue?? i dont understand your reasoning for the petition

Agreed. I liked Cass's lore, even though I never ended up playing her. I think that making her tie in with Shurima COULD be a good idea, but not the way Riot's going about it.

AbiwonKenabi1 votes

I have mixed feelings about these new lore updates, but I think Cassiopeia's is harmless enough. The Shurima connection is a long time coming and makes perfect sense. And Rioters have stated in the past that anything not explicitly retconned in lore updates is still true. So we can assume her dealings with her father and her value to the Noxian higher-ups as a spy of sorts, is probably still somewhat true. Its just not mentioned.

Skarner's and Amumu's lore change I dislike more so. Skarner's updated lore makes him out to be some sort of dumb, aggressive guardian, instead of the intelligent, civilized guardian of his people. I wouldn't mind it as much if it wasn't for the lore also saying "No one knows what he's guarding..." except we do: its the Brackern. They act like the idea of his race and his involvement in the Kalamanda incident never happened, which is a really rich piece of League lore that is just being forgotten.

Amumu's lore I mostly dislike because he's not a Yordle anymore. It was more a personal preference of mine--I felt like his existence in a place outside of Bandle City made Yordles seem like they are more involved in the world, rather than extremely isolated like they are today. But I can understand why they made this particular change.

Borand2 votes

I like the Amumu change, you couldn't really tell he's a Yordle but I believe his kit too, not just his lore should be updated to be less binary in the future. I think you're right though that it would be more interesting if the Yordles were a larger part of this world of League.

Everything else you said, I agree on.

HailFire Dragon1 votes

i think the new skarner lore was in the perspective of BEFORE skarner actually talked to anyone. your right, we do know what he is gaurding....it plainly obvious what it is too.

None of the new Lores since trundle have been very creative.

They are bland as can be.

Don't get me wrong cursed by a magical item for telling a lie is ground that has been walked before... but it was character driven ground that dealt with the character taking an action and then the fallout of said action

Bitten by a snake thing so now you are a snake thing is... no words but lazy. spider-man, werewolves, vampires and more all do this kinda crap.

The old lore sets up interesting stuff, and connected her to both Freljord and the new area. Artifact was from the new area... chief was from Freljord.

This new lore scraps the Freljord connecting and removes the character driven aspect of the story... and for writing team that says they are all about character driven story. Welp that seems odd they would remove those elements.
