How placements work.

Your placement MMR = (1250+S4MMR)/2 + (250-(50*PlacementLosses)) - 150

This is all based on information I have seen in previous seasons. Your mileage may vary, but this tends to give you a good idea of where you are at.

I tried this on an example I saw yesterday. According to that math, it would -350 at the end.

-350 in relation to the S4 MMR or -350 as an absolute value?

Even if you go 10-0, you will place below your S4 rank.

Rechecked her account. I was using the wrong math. She said 6 games had ragers, which I took to mean she lost 6 games, but actually she lost 8. That explains it.

But yes, they said that's the intention of the new system. It's called a "soft reset".

Yes, but you will place 150 MMR below what your actual MMR is in addition to the soft reset.

This was stated in the beginning of S4.

People seem to think the placements are harsher than last year.

They actually are IMO. Yet RIOT said they were going to be less of an effect on your placement. But htye seem to be much much much more detrimental that last season.

Go to op.gg -> find yourself there -> there's a button there you can press -> to know your aprox MMR -> Take that Number or write it down -> sum it with +1250 as these guys say (it used to be 1200, but, wth) -> you'll then, divide that number result /2 -> the rest will depend on your wins and loses as stated in the formula provided -> then discount -150 -> you will get placed.

Its not a fail proof system. But you get the idea.

so by this logic, with around 1200 mmr last season (silver 3) I should be 975 mmr with a 3-7 placement score (2 afk games and 3 all but unwinnable due to teammates feeding). Yet I got placed in Bronze 4, which is around a 750ish-850ish MMR.

Not much you can do when 3/5 people count for 2-23-5 in score. The other team is just simple tooooooo fed to do anything but lose at that point without the other team going derp mode and throwing on purpose.
