The Destruction of Poppy

So, I made this thread to type out this whole big essay on why the Poppy changes shouldn't go through, why the Captain America/Gnar ability on her Q makes no sense when she has a MASSIVE hammer instead, how her identity as a tower diving, one-shotting nuke-deploying warrior is just gone, and how just like every rework you're cutting her numbers, and taking her from a high-damage duellist to a tank (her Q now shields her instead of taking a chunk out of someone's own life, their future children's lives, and the health of all descendants of that specific bloodline forever), and how just like with Fiora, this is not POPPY that is being released here, but some completely different entity, from alternate reality where Kha'Zix is a fluffy kitten and Rengar is a cockroach, where Mordekaiser is part of a boy band and Jinx is a crossing guard. Because really, this isn't Poppy. Poppy is a generally unattractive, brutal mistress with a hammer. She doesn't have the prettiest face, she's hardcore and serious, she's literally a strong independant woman who doesn't need ANYBODY, let alone a man. She is THE champion that you see in champ select and think "Well, fuck me, I'm in for a rough time and I can't even jerk to her after in rage."

Her splash art is adorable. She doesn't do much damage because she's meant to build tank now. Her ultimate, instead of ensuring that she can get to you, pushes you AWAY. The only ability of hers that is still Poppy is her football tackle, but you know what? That isn't satisfying. It's not satisfying tackling someone in to a wall without being able to whollop them for their entire health bar late game. It's not satisfying, because it isn't Poppy.

Now.. Admittedly, I don't play her frequently. I don't like playing her right now because I always feel like I'm about to be really cheesy by picking her. But when I do play her, she's SATISFYING. It's nice being able to wait at low HP, and when the enemy laner tries to dive you, you smash their face in and they explode. It's satisfying to run at the speed of sound with her W, to stack up armor and damage at the same time, to build a statikk shiv and trinity force and instantly kill an ADC because they let you become relevant. I'm sure my opinion is going to be discarded because I don't have my name referring to Poppy, or a trillion games played as her, but I played her and had fun. And this.. This isn't going to be fun. I used to love Fiora, I don't play her anymore. I used to enjoy Mordekaiser, I don't play him anymore. I loved Poppy and I loved her image, but now you're just turning her in to another kawaii desu anime-eyed MMORPG heroine, and it's disgusting. I'm actually repulsed. Please, Riot, reconsider these changes. I know you worked hard, but you're working hard on destroying a fantastic champion.

Please, feel free to post your own thoughts below. Think it over - Don't just look at her ultimate and think "ITS GON B GUD 10/10". Compare this upcoming "Poppy" to the Poppy we all know.

Poppy's kit was broken. As in "the only way to fix it was to redo the entire thing" broken. Her old numbers were so low because they couldn't balance her kit as is. She needed to change for the very reasons you loved her. There is no way you would be satisfied with these changes.

And that's perfectly OK.

Riot has no responsibility to please 100% of their players, and you have no responsibility to like every change they make.

And Fiora was in a similar situation, seeing as OP mentioned her.

However, as a Fiora player pre and post rework, her identity as a nimble reactionary fighter was preserved well.

I haven't played this poppy rework (and I doubt OP has either given how these things usually go) so I can't speak for her, but I'd imagine if you want dive you can E in, W to block escapes, and quick tap the ult for a standard knockup instead of the orbital launch.

But OP would probably rather whine instead of try to innovate ways to adapt his playstyle to the changes

Previously, her kit was toxic and broken and they had to keep the numbers trash in order to ensure that she never reared her ugly head into the light of competitive. Poppy players everywhere have been asking for a rework for years so that they could play their favorite champion without their team feeling like they're getting trolled. She wasn't fun to play against, even when behind, and don't even get me STARTED on her ultimate.

New Poppy is great. Her visuals are above and beyond League's standards, and her kit actually promotes playing the game instead of ulting the enemy support and towerdiving without fear. New Poppy can actually be allowed to be a serious pick because her kit is actually healthy now. As for your comments about how it isn't Poppy anymore, I feel like they did a good job keeping her around. Old Poppy was supposed to be strong but awkward, and while not very good with people, she had a big hammer. That was the core of what she was, and with this rework, she still has that. So I am totally supportive of these changes, kit wise and character wise.

As others say, poppys identity was toxic, her ultimate had zero counter play, she ulted a support and murdered everyone else. Her old kit was the reason she was kept weak for such a long time, they could not buff her to a viable state and have her be healthy, because she had an unhealthy character design at her core.

The new kit keeps aspects of her old kit(the dash stun and big damage on q(if you land both parts) as well as high durability and move speed with her W, while also having the ability to single out and remove a person from a fight in an instant. The difference is the way her ult functions now, there's something the enemy team can do about it.

BEHOLD- Sir DISCORDDEADLIGHT and his absolutely unnecessary rant And, all the champions you named as a whole- were changed because of the same reason- they're too damn strong that, like Shaiyo said, the only way to fix it was to redo EVERYTHING, ground up. Now, fioras balanced (somewhat) Mordekaiser is (somewhat) and now, hopefully poppy will be too instead of R support murder every1

Also, the argument you make about "You used to not be able to jerk off in rage at her" just makes you look very immature. Come on, srsly, just the fact you mention that implies you do that to champions like Ahri or something and THATS repulsive

It scares me that the community actually thinks her Ult is going to be the most OP thing ever. You know what counters her ulting your teammate out of the fight temporarily?

Full disengage. Janna Bard Gragas

Its pretty much entirely useless a jungler. If you dont charge it you can have a Chogath Q on a 140s cooldown. BROKEN!

Poppy's current kit was only liked because it had almost no counterplay. Her Ultimate was just click and deal with it.

Old Poppy +Burst. Dear god, the unholy burst. +Fun. Her ult was fun. Slamming people into their own tower and executing them while taking no damage was fun. -Her ult was fun for her. For everyone else, pure cancer. You can't deny that a poppy barreling through your team to kill your squishy knowing you can't do anything to her to stop it did not feel fair. -Telegraphed as hell. Poppy always struggled with her low range and general lack of mobility. That W speed boost just did not cut it with all these dashes. Poppy was a very "I'm gonna getcha" champ. She's walking to you. Guess what's she's about to do. Not hard.

New Poppy +Versatile. She's less "lone ranger kill the carry." She brings utility through dash interruption and slows. She can peel for other people. +More range. That charge has a lot more range than it used to, allowing her to get close and do what she needs to do. She still has a large part of what made her fun to play- smashing people into walls. +Better laning. Her passive allows her to CS without being bullied out. +Still fun to play. She did not lose any power that wasn't compensated elsewhere. Might not 100-0 someone with a single Q, but she can actually reach people without flashing for it. -....Lollipoppy isn't nightmare fuel anymore? I don't know. I got nothing right now. -She's not bursty anymore. Which, honestly, I'm fine with. Poppy has never visually looked like the kind of champ that should be capable of doing that.
