So Shen and his Blade

Oglaf··7 votes·826 views

Why exactly should he be forced to play with this crap mechanic?

He gains nothing from having to work around it's wonkyness.

No reward, all risk for playing a Champ with one of the most convoluted mechanics in the game - and with zero poke.

It is OK thematically.

But gameplay-wise it is just a handicap, really.

Jon11741 votes

I think what they should have done is have more of his abilities work around it tbh

Vistha3 votes

It's funny because the description says it can be controlled with his abilities, when in fact he has only one ability that actually does so.

CrimsonCobra32 votes

That depends on how you define control. His W causes an auto-nullifying shield to appear around his sword.

LordGeovanni1 votes

thats not control of the sword thats the sword empowering an area

CrimsonCobra32 votes

I respectfully disagree. What we're really saying is that you're controlling the sword to empower the area. You choose when it activates after all, and the sword dictates where it occurs.

hhaavviikk1 votes

no, not even thematically, he should be an ninja, big 2 handed floating sword in the air does not say ninja, it says psychic user who can make swords float like say irelia, for shen it does not fit at all

CrimsonCobra32 votes

I don't know about that. I like it. It feels like a 'mystic ninja' theme to me. Although I admit that his play-style is a lot more visceral than the theme.

Ralanr2 votes

Shen's a tank. It's already hard enough to make him feel ninja like. His rework made him more likely to dart around the field and use hit and run tactics in duels, whereas before he'd just throw his sword and not really interact with you.

Meep Man3 votes

My only wish is that they sped up his Q. It's annoying when it takes a full second for my sword to get to me, especially late game.

Ralanr2 votes

I like the mechanic. It encourages him to fight people instead of last hitting under tower and then ulting when his team needs him.

But it is just bad, man. So bad.

But it did make him more interactive in lane.

But it did make him more interactive in lane.

It handicapped him severely in lane.

Absolutely no poke means no real lane presence.

Every melee Champ comes with at least ranged ability for a reason.

Ralanr1 votes

Garen and Darius don't really have range.

The problem with old Shen is that he could pretty much ignore his opponent and last hit under tower. There was no real interaction and he'd get to ult in for his team when they needed him.

I'm not saying Shen is good. But the rework made him more interactive and daring. Ranged top laners are always a bit h though.

Both Garen and Darius have plenty of range, don't be silly.

Their individual spin-to-win abilities are technically ranged, plus Darius' grabby-grabby.

Without any real way to poke back, Shen is in a horrible spot right now. Add to that he has one hand tied behind his back because of the most convoluted mechanic in the game... Yeah, there's a reason he is never played anymore.

Shen's E and Q have more range then any of Darius or Garen's skills.

Ahahahaha!

Bahahahaha.

Oh wait... are you serious?

Arakadia2 votes

No need to be so rude when you disagree. :/

Additionally, Shen's Q has really long range as it can travel across very long distances. And his E is longer range for sure. It gives him mobility where the enemy can't react or do much else as basic attacks don't hurt too much during laning phase. Darius and Garen have no poke at all, and so does Shen, but Shen has good trading potential normally. I say normally as Riot nerfed him for worlds so his trades aren't very good.

CrimsonCobra31 votes

One thing I'd like to correct. Technically Q has a long range, but practically it's a melee ability, since the only effect that can be applied from range is a minor slow. Therefore he has his E, which is about as good in terms of range as Darius E. (Probably slightly longer, but not by much.) However, his W can be applied from the full range of his Q, which is massive. That said, it's purely defensive and doesn't help him at all if he's not in it.

CrimsonCobra31 votes

I still do that.

Ralanr2 votes

Shen's kinda forced to because of harass usually though.

BeatzBoyFTW2 votes

Seems somewhat better than his old Q tbh. Provides better dueling power instead of a Point & Click damage/heal ability.

redfeenix1 votes

Totally agree @Reav3 fucked up one of my favourite champs with this half assed update.

New Shen is really shitty not only to play ... but to even look at. Fucked him up big time.

Arakadia2 votes

He looks great in game imho.

redfeenix2 votes

He looks like a dog chained to a post.

Big Lincoln1 votes

he should dual wield them and do mixed damage 2bh

Arakadia1 votes

That doesn't fit shen at all. He is a tank not a damage dealer, he has never been hybrid, and that doesn't even make sense thematically.

Big Lincoln1 votes

shen was meant to be a strong duelist, and that implies him as a fighter

it would be more fitting than a glowing sword anchored to the ground

Arakadia1 votes

Shen is and has always been a tank. Additionally, he in his lore never uses both swords because each sword has a different use. And Shen has never been a hybrid champion. You want to give him corki's passive from my understanding.

Big Lincoln1 votes

he's not a very good, nor a very interesting tank

most of his value comes from his ult and his taunt, and he has no presence at any location in the game without one of these.

I meant it as alternating more freely than what his current Q does. possibly toggle back and forth

Arakadia2 votes

I'd say he's a quite interesting tank. EVERY one of his abilities is completely unique to the game. Some of it however is gimmicky.

His basic attacks already are physical, with his Q being magical.

Big Lincoln1 votes

not really, Q is just an auto enhance, E is a dash with a taunt component. W is unique to him but it only lasts for 1.5 seconds so nobody cares about it, and riot nerfs the fuck out of him every time he's meta because of his R.

he offers nothing, really, that a standard tank does. he'd be much more unique being balanced as a defense-minded fighter instead of a peel tank, which other tanks do better bar global ult

Arakadia1 votes

His Q is more then just an auto enhance. To say his Q is just an auto enhance is biased. And there is only one other taunt in the game.

Vistha1 votes

I used to play Shen a bunch before the rework was announced. Even considered getting the Warlord skin.

Keyword: "Considered".

paisy1 votes

It's weird but not bad to play with

Arakadia1 votes

I mean he does gain his passive, Q, and W from his blade. Thats pretty rewarding.

Asayake 5150glow1 votes

Because flash E and ult.

That's why no poke and weird mechanics - an aoe disable on a basic ability, and the ability to always be where you need to be as long as an ally is near - with a fat shield.

You know that doesn't work in practice. His Shield has as severe cooldown to it, even if you utilize his passive to shorten it.

Seriously, there was nothing wrong with old Shen.

Keep visual upgrade, revert the mechanic changes.
