Zed counters in LCS and the awkward spot they put him in

Zed's assassination pattern is all about target selection. He ults his defenseless target, combos them and gets out safely due to his double shadows. Against a team with low or unreliable CC, he will even do this 1v5. But no matter how hard this annoying technique demolishes soloQ, it'll remain relatively lacklustre in LCS. Here's why:

Kindred Probably his biggest counter. Good early base damage and will ult either his deathmark pop or the damage amp his ult offers. There's even an AoE heal to mitigate _his _AoE. Elise will rappel when he ults her. Chances are, she might even stun him in the middle of her team. Graves Free armor, double mobility (if you count his ult) and that stupid, unfair, Ihateitsomuch smokebomb. Gragas Damage reduction and 3 forms of CC that will either catch him out or delay followup. Maokai AoE damage reduction and targeted hard CC. Poppy Scaling defenses and targeted hard CC. Trundle Steals his AD and sustains endlessly. Braum Thresh Alistar Yeah good luck killing those.

So you can't even really lastpick Zed in pro play because he's getting teamfight/skirmish counters regardless. This leaves him with 2 targets, the ADC and the midlaner. The ADC gets pampered with wards and farm all game so he'll have a hard time killing that. The midlaner will play safe (with either TP, Exhaust or Barrier to discourage all-ins), farm with AAs and get every blue. And if there was a tower trade, he'll have a worse time splitpushing since he's more vulnerable in the longer lane.

All in all, this leaves us with a Zed on 2 opposite ends of the spectrum. Loads of catchpotential and excellent KDA in soloQ ... and in LCS, a Zed that can get a winable 1v1 once in a blue moon (and is consequently picked pretty much never). How do you balance that?

Maokai is usually banned heavily in LCS Supports are almost always 4-5 levels lower than everyone else in the game. Thresh isn't all that tanky without a few items Kindred / Nid are heavy bans Poppy's 'hard cc' relies on your opponent being out of position Trundle is only picked into something like a poppy and usually spends the game endlessly split pushing

Zed does work and does see LCS play still... even more so once they start playing with the QSS nerfs "Zed that can get a winable 1v1 once in a blue moon" But those 'once in a blue moon' catches, usually result in losing an objective, or control of an objective.

Everything you said applies to almost every single assassin style champion.

Still, those tank supports with their HP-stacking, hard CC and abilities that make them even more tanky are hard to kill. Once they hit 6, the level discrepancy usually won't end up mattering. (Like come on, a little more Dmg/HP/MR/Ar is supposed to be impactful on a role that doesn't depend on stats?) Poppy's hard CC is a targeted displacement, never mind how BS that Q hitbox is. Trundle can flex into top and support, his laning phase is pretty good and there's no way there won't be a tank for him to steal stats off of. Though I suppose his popularity might vary from region to region. He's probably the weakest counter I listed tbh, ignite can kill his healing before he gets durable enough that leaves him with only his pillar to avoid getting chased down and kited.

I'll have to look up just how successful he is in LCS, even in LCS, ADCs and others rarely bought QSS to counter him. Other assassins can pick TP, are slightly better teamfighters and don't gimp their team with an AD mid ... or they have a simple straightforward playstyle that can work in soloQ but isn't as oppressive as Zed's. EDIT: Oh yeah, and while Zed might be able to make catches in LCS once in a while, he can't do it consistently. Which means his team will lose that objective...

I don't think Zed is "OP" but he certainly is annoying to play against. I actually take Veigar into him and position my stun into his ult. It works pretty well and if I'm not strong enough to kill him in one combo I can at least prevent most of his follow up damage and trade back. But of course some champs are just item dependent against him to the point of asking "why does x champ force me to rush y item to this extreme everytime?"

Another Zed counter, huh ;)

Well it's technically a good thing that Zed forces the Armguard/Hourglass buy. That way, kill pressure isn't the only presence he has on the map. He also put the mage into an awkward spot where he has to use the Armguard stats/Hourglass active effectively.

Although it is a bit of a stretch to say that buying armor is "forced" against an AD heavy team. It's an option that exists, like Abyssal and Locket against AP teams.

I think the difference there though is Abyssal reduces and enhances damage, whereas blocking or cleansing Zed's ult just completely negates it entirely. You don't HAVE to build a Zhonya's into a Zed, but as a mage, it's pretty freaking stupid not to.

I'm not on the Zed hate train though - I have learned to beat him with conventional mages. He's just annoying. The guy I really hate is Yasou. He's such a spambot. You can outplay him 95% of the game, but he only needs to get one lucky nado or dash in to beat you the other 5% of the time when you're not completely destroying him, and considering the frequency of his dashes and nados it's hard to be perfect 100% of the time.
