How do you play against Rengar top lane?

I usually do Illoai top lane, and I've gotten pretty good at winning against most matchups I run into, or at least finding ways to stalemate the lane and go even.

I recently had a game against a Rengar top for the first time and got demolished. I'm not trying to call it OP, I've lost plenty of lanes in first time matchups while I try to figure out how to handle that champion. I just this time did not really come up with a plan for what I could have done to make it better. It seems like he can cross the entire lane from the top bushes, so just standing far from them doesn't seem viable. Staying under my tower for the first 6 levels would probably work alright, but if Rengar decides to just not push that seems like begging to never get any CS in all game.

So how does one go about laning against Rengar in the top lane?

Don't go near the bushes.

I'd suggest just not even playing top lane anymore... it's such a troll lane these days like, I'll be 0-2 and behind in cs while my team dominates their lane and aggros towers, BUT I'M still the one to get ganked while i'm not even past river mark and I'm always having to face ranged champs who can chunk half my hp bar before I can even come close to touching a creep WHILE UNDER MY TOWER -__-

Shen, poppy, malz, Swain, champions that can survive his burst and punish him for the constant engages work best. Honestly if you dont directly counter it, it's usually not a lane you can win.

Play around the very bottom of the lane. Build tabis, especially if the enemy team is AD/auto attack heavy. Since SoloQ and damage meta, id suggest Ignite especially toward lanes you almost win. Rengar can and will use anything he can to jump around the lane and be mobile, like wards if they have red trinket and your tentacles.

I dont know much more i can suggest for Illaoi since i dont have any experience on her. On my main Poppy for example, when he does jump on me or say a minion i slightly kite him backwards with my autos and Q, chase him into bush and E him into wall since bush is on the wall, or W his jump and Q again. But i dont know if i can recommend the same kiting/chasing playstyle on Illaoi.

If you are going for the even/safe matchup, then just sit by tower and dont let him abuse bushes.

typically rengar is going to be running sudden impact giving him lethality every time he jumps from the bush and most likely Ignite as his summoner

keep the bushes warded so you can see him and have a better idea when he is going to leap out. also i bet they are taking Dark Harvest now which procs when they hit a target below 50% hp and it helps as an execute which can be proc by ignite as well. keep in mind his flex rune as well which most likely is going to be adaptive force X2 and HP so he will have a free +12 ad at the start of the game.

knowing this we need two main things in lane to keep him from snowballing the lane out of control, HP and ARMOR. also with this rune set up you are going to have to be careful when below 40% hp and might as well recall. cuz with his kit + ignite + plus dark harvest it should be easy for him to 1 shot. consider it like a garen at lvl 6 with Ignite when you are low vs that recall cuz they are gonna all in for a kill.

Playing on the bottom side of the lane and just farming. Let lane push into you so he has less bush to work with. Ask for ganks.
