Why Is Crit and Snowballing The Focus This Patch?

Tribbles Foxfolk··7 votes·867 views

"Here at Riot, we design our game around our design problems." - Gnarsies parodying Riot's decision-making. (Don't be one of THOSE people that jump on the Gnarsies hatetrain. He's just a messenger of news and controversy, not the actual problem-causer. Don't shoot the messengers.)

For real, though, Crit is not a fun mechanic and has HAD EVERYTHING BUILT AROUND IT THIS PATCH. WHY?! Ask ANYONE (that doesn't main ADC, Yasuo, or Tryndamere, fuck those champs and those players) and they'll tell you that Critical Strikes is not fun at all. It's even worse when just about EVERY bloody mechanic in this patch is BUILT AROUND AN UNHEALTHY (or as Riot would call it: Toxic) MECHANIC.

What's even worse is that the snowballing is completely out of control! Games can literally end AT FIRST BLOOD due to the retarded snowballing. Yasuo can literally 1v5 the enemy team with nothing more than a Shiv, Cloak of Agi, and T1 Boots. WHAT?! HOW...WA...WHY? Come on, Riot, Season 5 was really great about comebacks and balance! Yes, Kindred, Morde, and Fiora were kind of out of control, but they were also quite new, so they had a lot of kinks to mature through and could be easily fixed by numbers tweaks.

Honestly, if the Pre-Season patch ONLY included the ADC mini-reworks, Cull, and the River Warden, I would have been content with it. PLEASE, Riot, DO NOT RELEASE THE MINIONS AND PLEASE ROLL BACK THE ITEM CHANGES (Except new items, Runaan's, and PD, those are all OK in my book). THAT SHIT WILL BREAK THIS ALREADY-BROKEN STATE OF LEAGUE EVEN FURTHER.

Gnarsie complains about a LOT of things. I mean a LOT! That's why I have and until he stops complaining about a LOT of things, continue to. His reasons are pretty bad in my opinion as well.

Anyways, yeah, welcome to Preseason where things get a little screwed up, but settle down over the next 2-3 patches. I guess you weren't here for Booty Hunter Warwick, League of Cleavers, The Warmogs Dynasty, and such.

"A little screwed up" That's certainly one way of putting it.

I remember league of oneshot warwick and league of cleavers, and we just got through cinderhulk hypetrain, with devourer staying strong even after having it's phase.

And yeah it's not worse than those cases but the thing is - You'd think after all we've been through Riot would react to things faster (I'm not saying they outright shouldn't happen anymore, some mishaps are invevitable).

And yet it looks like we're gonna spend another month or two in a phase of ridiculousness while already knowing what's broken - WHY? What are we waiting for exactly? The problem won't fix itself, no new strategies will rise since the problem isn't a rock-paper-scissors thing like metashifts.

I've heard about the Great BC Incident. Sounded painful. What season was that, anyway? 3 or 4? I'm curious to learn more about it.

No idea about seaons, think it was 2012 or so? What happened was, a patch introduced an item that had a good deal of both AD and health and was slot efficient when stacked even despite unique passives not stacking (though if you had 5 cleavers your first hit on an enemy would immediately stack up the debuff to max)

6 black cleavers was pushing it, since you'd probably get more oomph by buying another item with spread out stats but buying 2 or 3 was still efficient and made sense. Which of course lead to the rise of champions who synergize with it's stats well to the top (mainly Pantheon, who'd oneshot squishies with his E alone while still being ridiculously tanky, shredding tanks, and having maxed cd reduction)

This is so dumb. People complain about games lasting to long now they are mad they last 30 minutes or less.... FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU WANT

I always liked the longer games. Granted, the 50+ minute ones got kinda stupid sometimes with both teams playing hyper-passive with exposed inhibs, but it was still fun that you could actually PLAY the late-game game.

I am starting to like the new objective style game instead of the "stand middle and stall 20 minutes" thing.

I really like the fact that people are effectively splitpushing and dropping tier two towers 17-20 minutes in. Instead of dropping tier one towers and saying "ok now lets all group and do nothing but kill each other for 35 minutes to see who can get the most kills." The amount of games that i played where a team will win a fight...then immediately recall to buy an item and group up for another mid lane fight is ridiculous. They only ended when timers reached 75s and it was impossible not to end it.

I actually think its very interesting. They buffed adcs massively (arguably too much, but save it for another thread) but also introduced ways for early game teams to end the game before the adc's really get going. I think its a really good idea, though it seems that games can snowball a little too fast atm.

A lotta too fast, if you ask me. It can sometimes take just one kill or maybe a 15-30 CS lead to have a game snowball out of control.

I don't disagree. However, until I know more about how the minion damage buff works, I won't say much. More specifically, I want the answers to two questions. Does "average level" mean the average of the levels or does it mean the average of total exp? And second is there a window where one team can have a level advantage and not get the minion buff? Until I can actually get answers to these questions, I can't really make any accurate statements about how quickly games are snowballing.

"Average Level" will be probably be "Average Level", not "Average EXP".

And the minion thing: I think it goes into effect when the NEXT wave spawns (Say there's a 30s delay between waves: The current one stays the same and the next one receives the buffs). However, this is essentially beta/PBE content and it's subject to MAJOR change (But let's face it: Since it was planned to be in 5.22, it's not changing).

except that the adc's are pretty often the ones who are snowballing TO end these games. Them or ad casters and crit-based melee carries. Mages got left in the dust and junglers are struggling pretty hard to clear early.

Mages are struggling, but so far, I haven't noticed much of a problem with the jungle. In fact, it was HARDER to clear before the patch and even HARDER at the start of S5.

Btw, I don't have a problem with ADCs being allowed to snowball, that's what they're DESIGNED for. However, the snowballing has gotten a little redonkulous (Thankfully, the minion changes have been delayed, so that's one less problem for now). I just got out of a game as Yasuo and facerolled the enemy team. Was against a Xerath in mid, so in THEORY, I probably should have had a roughly even lane. Nope, I won by 2 turrets, 6+ kills, and 3 or fewer deaths around the 15 minute mark. And I'm AWFUL as Yasuo, by the way.

Their team: Blitz, Kog, Lee, Xer, and GP. XERATH was the only threat and he died in 2 Qs. We won a fairly easy win, especially with a pre-minion FB (counter-invade OP).

The idea with crit is to have it high enough that it doesnt feel like RNG. If you have a 70% crit your damage is going to be fairly consistently, where as if a character has 30% crit its going to feel more random and spiky. I assume we will see some adjustments to itemization to reduce the flat AD to make up for this eventually.

He can't 1v5 with shiv, cloak, t1 boots. I play him a lot, he may be strong but he's not THAT strong unless you somehow drafted a 5 man squishy team with zero cc. Any focus at all tears him to pieces. Games do not even come close to ending at first blood, i have to highly disagree there. Yes crit is a little overbearing right now and the new masteries are a little crazy, but it's pre-season. These are the most exciting games ive played since pre-juggernauts. Every ADC is seeing play now, not just Vayne Jinx Tristana, everyone is playing new champs in new roles, and it's not just the same boring builds on every champ.

That's because people are still figuring out what the optimal build for every ADC is. Give it a month MAX and people will be back to the same 6-8 item build path (Choosing between PD, Shiv, and Firecannon basically).

Well there seems to be a lot of emphasis on making everyone feel unique, which is gonna require unique builds. But what i'm trying to say is that right now everyone and everything is viable. I'm sure in the next month the best 4-5 are going to push the rest out. Might as well have fun with it now while everyone is experimenting*[slayer-jinx-catface]*

Since they've had a sudden fascination with RNG, i was hoping they'd bring back dodge; at least it led to some hilarious situations instead of being instakilled.
