My own response to Riot's ignorance about fairness of matchmaking
I've found that sometimes, I can't play support and it's not because of me, but because I'm playing with a group of 3 or 4 that are toxic. So I switch to jungle or whatever and I get mostly solo players. Are there any plans to remove parties of 4 from matchmaking completely and to only let groups of 2 and 3 play with each other? And if not, can you please add awareness of groups within a team? The only awareness we have now is an opt-in awareness by the groups themselves with using the same club name, outside of deduction that is, which can't always be 100 percent accurate.
Some of the groups are decent, sometimes they're mixed bags, and other times they're totally corrupted. Having some tags on the scoreboard or at the very least the loading screen, perhaps orange and green group icons or something like that would go a long way to reassuring players' suspicions, but also assist them in utilizing their diplomacy skills.
I think that players in general don't think too much about diplomacy, they just think about 'not being toxic', but being diplomatic with your team can be quite helpful, even if you do have to mute them. But leaving players' diplomatic power largely to their own deductions puts a lot of unnecessary mental power to detective work when they might be busy trying to deduce what's going on with their opponents...splitting a player's brainpower into an additional extra task like this makes the game a lot more frustrating for the average player. I can only imagine how much worse it is when LP is on the line.
I personally feel like the only fairness that really matters should be group matching consistency. If you want to match bronze versus master, go ahead, just keep on the bronze on one team and all the master on the other team, and make the bronze guys only lose 1 LP and the master only gain 1. Sure, that theoretically would never need to happen, but the point is that one thing that your system hasn't care one bit about is encouraging the players to improve. In fact, I daresay forcing the developers with crying to let you get your primary more often is showing that you don't want to improve. And yet, here Riot is encouraging such attitudes by giving players 90 percent or more chance to get their primary.
Getting matched as a full team of silvers against a full team of golds? If you're all in your promotional series, there's literally no problem with this at all. What I don't think is appropriate is matching players outside of leagues ON THE SAME TEAM. And yet you developers post incredibly ignorant statements like "if we allowed players to tag other players as not suitable to be matched with, then they would have no opponents/allies if they tagged everyone" which makes no sense. First of all, your matchmaking is 100 percent wrong if it literally looks for 10 people and then divides them. Matchmaking should be looking for 5 people twice. If it's not doing that, it will never be as fair as it can be. And second of all, nobody would ever tag all the players and if they do, they deserve such a downfall. It would only consider their allies in the first place. You should never be allowed to deny the developer to play against other players, that's just ludicrous and showing that the matchmaking was sloppily designed in the first place.
I'm not saying of course that adding players tagging unsuitable teammates is a feature we need, but we do need a proper matchmaking that cares about looking for 5 players twice instead of 10 players and dividing them. If you want elaboration on what this implies, ask some questions and I'll see what I can answer. I played a lot of Dota 2 ranked and although their matchmaking system is probably still terrible, suffice it to say that me not being ranked in LoL has nothing to do with me being relatively inexperienced(been playing since beta but off and on) until recently and everything to do with me not wanting to repeat the same experiences that I did with other games. Yeah you can tell me to man up and take the heat, and maybe I'll have to do just that, but perhaps in the meantime Riot could look at my input and start developing something that other players can take advantage of, and who knows maybe it'll help me in the future too if I stick around that long.
