Sure wish there was any counter play to malz ult as a mage.
He legit just one shots you level 6 with Ignite as long as he pressed E on you. Sure wish I could Cleanse it, but nah.

You can just buy a QSS regardless. Nothing is stopping you from doing so because it hasnt stopped other players from getting QSS as a mage either.
Is it gonna set you behind? Of course it is. Is it gonna negate him from guaranteed kills solo? Of course it is.
I even get Zhonyas as adc if I notice a zed is focusing me or a Kayn, among other things so at least I have some guaranteed safety. Since I can't trust my team to keep me alive unless it's something like a Tahm Kench eating me to safety.
As a mage, the counter to malzahar is your superior clear speed.
Deny him the gold, to deny him purchasing AP by level 6.
At least that's how it use to be, with the new spell shield and AP scaling voidlings, it might not matter anymore. He use to be an anti-assassin. But they tried to turn him into some kind of "battle mage" like swain or vlad i guess??? How you counter him specifically on mages might not be viable now that his voidlings can be used to clear. I can't be sure since I don't actually level up his voidlings if I play him post rework.
I don't think riot puts much thought in how mages will counter champions that they design anymore.
