Is crit Garen viable ranked/better than tank?

When I was in plat 5, I came across a Garen otp who only went the crit build. He was on like 10 game win streak and even skipped a division. Also, he totally solo carried the game to the point where the enemy top laner just joked along and cried mercy all game.

The build is fun as hell but I was wondering if crit Garen is viable in ranked or even better than the regular tank build? What's even the proper build order or best runes and masteries to take? I ask because I'm too scared to try it out in ranked and normals are too easy to be sure.

its not better, but its viable. its just riskier and only works if you snowball out of control. that garen OTP might be much higher ranked so he knew he could get early kills and just wanted to breeze through lower elos.

Exactly this. The item is already over 100% gold efficient.

It actually might be better than tank at this point. The only reason I see to pick Tank Garen now is to counter a Riven or Renekton.

Garen gets kited... Even tank Garen gets bursted lategame...

No. The damage creep threads are really exaggerated. Tank garen cannot be bursted unless he 1v5s.
