I can understand why they would move towards this kind of marketing.

  1. Hextech crafting is basically free and making buying skins not necessary
  2. LoL is a free game

So where would they get their money from? This is a good way imo.

  1. People who don't like it. just don't buy it.
  2. People who do like it probably don't mind to spend the money
