Let's talk Riven

I've seen countless rants about Yasuo "omg so broken" "pls nerf" "pls delete" etc. Eventually, he was at least touched up, and in a way that I feel didn't ruin him but also addressed some issues people had with Tank-suo

Now Riven **We know bad Riven players exist. This isn't about them ** Im surprised actually there isn't more about how bad this champion is compared to other champs right now. By bad I mean she offers very little counter play when learned, and if your jg isn't camping her to holy hell she has way too high of a chance of running over a solo game.

I play riven (not very well) and I get that when you can't play her to her fullest, she can be stomped into not mattering. However, I haven't seen a Riven in ranked this season that wasn't eventually stomping 1v2 or 1v3 eventually. I've watched plenty of counter play videos and tried to apply those tactics but they seem more and more useless against her as time goes on.

I don't have any clue as to what changes could be offered except for maybe increasing cd on the shield dash and decreasing the shield itself, or just straight up give her more cd all around.

Here are the main reasons I feel she needs changes

Unless the Riven player picks Riven into a heavy CC comp or a champion that is specifically strong against her (I've heard Volibear ) the laning phase is an absolute nightmare against her. Her lack of all 3 skills before 3 is overshadowed by her massive all-in potential at 1 or 2. This allows her pretty much free reign of controlling the lane how she sees fit.

If you build dmg, you don't have enough def to not get blown up If you build tank, you need HIGH ASS tank stats to not get blown up

Now lets say she effs up, misses a jump, only hits 1 auto or something, she then has enough abilities/cd to freely jump away from you if you attempt to punish. Did you walk forward to attempt punish?

Her cd will allow one of her abilities to re-engage, possibly stun you, and win the trade. If you had built dmg, the chance of her killing you when re-engaging is quite high and your positioning matters more. If youre tank you might be able to get some dmg off, but it won't be enough. If your cd's are lower than hers and you just used them to punish, she's going to turn and win or run and laugh. She pretty much wins every trade when played right.

I get she has weaknesses and I'm not the best anti riven player in the world, so I guess you could dismiss most of these points as my personal lack of skill. I'd buy that as possible explanation for most of it, but here's where it gets out of hand no matter who is playing.

If Riven doesn't get fed off of you, her high mobility allows her to jump walls and f up your jungler/mid laner as well as crazy tp gank potential.

IF SHE SUCCESSFULLY PERFORMS ONE OF THESE GANKS BEFORE 6, THE GAME IS TILTED HIGHLY IN HER TEAMS FAVOR BY DEFAULT. This is my main problem. Even if she's a shitty Riven player, a few common things ruin the game for her opponents inherently

  1. Morale (insert inherent league cooperation problems here). If you mess up and give her that kill, most players instantly turn on you because of her notoriety of bs. If she's better than you, and you're doing the right thing by hugging tower, your team will get pissed at her roaming. She can easily roam to bush hop a wall and eliminate a farming jg before you can wander. She then comes back to lane as a bigger threat, and you're an even bigger asshole for being useless against her. She tilts the shit out of people when fed, and its too easy for her to get there.

  2. She requires cooperation AND higher skill to beat in the majority of team compositions. I hope I don't have to expand this much further. If her pick is strong against you, you need your jg. Even if your jg comes, you NEED the gank to be successful, or its a waste of the jungler's time and yours. If you get a game where a jg doesn't camp, you lose lane lol. Even if the jg comes to gank once or twice, if she escapes (which is really easy) then its a waste and she's still going to be stronger/win the lane. It feels like "who you pick and is your jg willing to camp" is the condition for winning. Thats shitty.

  3. That comeback tho. Her dmg and abilities with items and farm minus kills is still enough to be a viable skirmisher during team fights. She has CC burst and an Execution AOE ult. If you go even with her in lane, no kills just farm, she can still help her team win the game without being a hyper carry. In fact, if she starts getting kills during the teamfights she just snowballs from that point of the game onward.

  4. Most matches where I've seen a Riven lose (rare) it was because she just couldn't carry the other 4 teammates or she got lead and threw it by being too aggressive and mindlessly diving.

  5. Riven smurfs that brag about their smurfing and 10+ kills with x farm above everyone else.

TL;DR Riven needs some changes/nerfs/something lol If you got real strategies or counter points please offer them. I would love for the reality to change to "nah you're doing it wrong this works". I'm not opposed to being wrong or learning. If I'm right hopefully someone important enough sees my points and considers them.

Thanks guys.

She doesn't have all-in potential at levels 1/2 unless the enemy laner is a blithering idiot.

She's a glass cannon. She also has no % armor pen till late game where she might build a LW, if at all.

Get someone tanky to bodyblock her CC and then just CC her in the face and proceed to kill her right there?

She also can't jump over walls without her Q3, which is still only very short distance.

Are you a Riven main of any consequence? I don't see how you are the voice of the Riven mains

I wasn't aware looking up what high-ELO Riven mains have to say was impossible.

I've seen many a good Riven all in at 2 and win against many opponents. I get it that she IS weak at this point, but holy fuckin hell if your top laner actually gives it to her its a huge nudge to her winning.

Being a glass cannon doesn't matter if you can spam dodge dash and stun or just 1v2

Your suggestion for body blocking offers little for laning phase.

Q3 is still enough to hop a wall after roaming to bush to gank jg. I don't see how mentioning its only the Q3 is anything of note towards use of it? The wall hop should be flat out taken off in my opinion

Freeze wave in front of tower, farm near your tower. Riven will have to push up, equals easy gank. She could have a million dashes, it doesn't matter if she's CC'd and dies before she can get far enough to escape in a gank.

Also in Ranked, you have time before a game starts to pick/change Summoner Spells. I'd probably go Exhaust or such which effectively ruins her and ensures most ganks will end up burning a Flash or her life.
