Support Reccomendation for Learning How to Play Safe

cardomajig24··2 votes·1,376 views

As the title states, i'm looking for supports that encourage playing a safe lane as i'm starting to recognize that i'm losing a lot because i'm adapting too much of a feast or famine playstyle (Sion support). Besides Janna and Soraka who would you all suggest for a player trying to learn how to play safely so I can learn to climb out of Bronze instead of throwing every game i'm slightly behind.

One of my favorite Supports is Thresh because he can play passively and agressively dire the situation. For example, he can Q (hook) in and E (Push) towards you and your adc. On the other hand, he can also sheild and E champions away. He has been a wonder for me, but other good ones are Braum, and Lulu. Youre welcome to add me if you have further questions or need help. Death Rive Glad i could help. Best of luck.

I'll test her out but from what some people on C9 said in a guide she's not very teamfight oriented aside from a mantra'd ability. Only reason I worry about this is because team fights are really what define a game in bronze/silver i've noticed. Not many people know how to buy a Zz's or a banner (which I guess is a good and bad thing).

I wouldn't take whatever C9 said as very applicable for bronze/silver. We both know that the teamfight in bronze/silver isn't exactly a coordinated dance. Karma has this great ability to react and act on many different situations. I think you'll notice once you have a few games to get to know her that she often shines in those chaotic teamfights. Her mantra W is an amazing bit for teamfights, but you'll see beyond it. As a plus, you can waveclear with her, very important (we both know that too ^^")

p.s. nag yourself to try and spam proc her passive whenever you can. It'll avoid the few awkward starting games that I went through :)

TBH the champion you play doesn't have a huge impact on how you 'play safe' as a playstyle, it just changes what safe means.

For someone like Janna, "safe" can sometimes mean seiging them under their turret if you have wards set up since you have so many peel tools that you'd still be safe even if a gank or roam appeared. Playing "safe" with something weird and janky like vayne support on the other hand would basically mean never leaving under your tower.

Most of the suggestions people have mentioned are good at peeling and making things safe for your adc if they're failing to be safe themselves, but since you mentioned it was you throwing when behind it sounds more like a playstyle issue for you rather than your adc. Remember, playing safe is a playstyle, not a champion pick. Pretty much every champion can be played safely and pretty much everyone can be played aggro as the situation warrants, it's just a matter of having the self-discipline to actually do so.

Except maybe Draven. You won't get many stacks playing passively. :)

Well, you'll get a lot of stacks from playing passively. You'll just never cash those stacks.

Not really. You have to be hitting minions with spinning axes, which kills them and you push. If you're not pushing, you're not getting as many stacks as you could.

This IS what I mean, i'm not saying it's the ADC it's totally my playstyle. That's why I want a champ that's more geared towards saving the adc than being a playmaking monster like Zyra or Brand (Thresh excluded because he's a special case). Something that will force me to consider options other than going ham or facetanking skillshots. Because that's how I learned playing Sion support and it always rewarded me until now when it doesn't.

In that case, I would highly recommend Tahm. TahmKench

Alright, buying him on Saturday. But before I forget, have you played him and if you have, how does Knight's Vow feel on Tahm? I think it'd be really good but it's something that only really shines when taking objectives because just like Bond of Stone the damage reduc just can't compete with burst (as it should, bond of stone and knight's vow shouldn't force a tank meta where burst mages have no burst and all other masteries+items are worthless)

Sylas Dr3gb0urn32 votes

Tahm is typically built tanky and not bursty... his kit is geared towards him taking the hits. So don't waste your gold on trying to UP his damage. Build him to sustain, not to burst, and I am sure you will be satisfied with his damage output still.

Sylas Dr3gb0urn32 votes

To Clarify, yes, Knights Vow would be a good item to build on him.

Will do.

Sona can play safe or aggressive. Though she probably wins more if she's aggressive. Karma can play safe and still poke and stuff with her Q, escape with the MS buff on E, and root in W. Lulu. Tahm Kench can Devour an aggressive adc to get him tf out.

I'd try Orianna. She's very mana hungry early game, so her laning phase mostly consists of staying back and shielding the adc/using her speed buff to get them out of trouble until she can build some mana items to be useful mid game.

the best part about this is that every support has tools to play it safe and to attempt engage. safe is just a playstyle of any champ. how to play safe depends on your champ. most of it involves poking with low cg spells and using your cc defensively. the guy above me said everything else i wanted to say but Soraka really is solid for learning.

She's solid in general and i'm considering maining her, but for real, what comps should I pick her against? I feel like against poke-heavy lanes and less burst/sustained dps teams is where she shines but I i'm not sure.

you are right and wrong. she is a very weird ick because she has tools for both. honestly she works better into poke comps, but her silence can easily stop 2 bursters from doing anyhting, make them miss their combos timing or stop them all together, while her heal keeps her team safe from poke. what really determines if you should pick her is YOUR team comp. the harder it will be for the team to get to you, and the more cc you have on your team to peel for you, the better. you see, soraka becomes a very high prio target mid game, as this is when people are still low(er) damage, but her heal is already probably redemption empowered. this allows her to literally walk behind someone and heal them through hard focus. the safer sorak will be from the enemy comp the better. you shouldnt usually pick her into assassins/mages who can 100-0 her through her frontline. these are talons and zeds luxs and lbs. unless you are confident in your ability to silence their combo at a crucial enough point for them to waste cds, but also mitigate most of the damage.

If you play Leona but restrict yourself to peel and don't engage, I think that could work. Leona's my #2 champ, so I'm biased.

Nami is very safe. She is a classic enchanter, able to turn bad teamfights around and safely heal/poke during the laning phase.

Lulu is good too. Able to Polymorph the ADC into silence with Whimsy, and can greatly buff the ally with Wild Growth and Help, Pix!

Taric has a very safe lane as well. Bravado keeps your cooldowns low, and the double stun area from Bastion > Dazzle means you can very easily peel if your ADC gets engaged. Cosmic Radiance is a literal lifesaver as well.

If you want to play it safe and not be super aggressive go: Bard Nami Janna or Soraka If you want a little passive play to keep safe, but also some aggression that can scale well into a pseudo-carry go: Sona Lulu If you want to keep your ADC alive and stop them from doing stupid things, go: TahmKench Braum Thresh Taric Zilean

I'm actually getting Tahm soon and i'm gonna have a level 9 train me to do clutch saves because he regularly goes too deep, lol. Braum I can see myself getting good with if I can get rid of my "poke always and beat face all the time mentality" and Taric is good fun but cooldowns limit such a fabulous man, so i'm gonna see if I can get a weird cooldown reduc build til people start showing that they can stop going in at 25% health.

Bard is a strange one, my friend is teaching me the ways of the wanderer.

And Thresh...I need some practice with his hooks...lots of practice. (I try and hit max range hooks too much)

I really enjoy Lulu for learning support. She's squishy and lethal early game which i feel helped/is still helping me learn positioning. She has incredibly good cc for dives which helped/is helping me learn skill management and understanding what other champions that are diving your adc are capable of. She's very versatile in that she can be built differently for very different experiences mid/late game which has helped/is helping me learn which items to build for what reasons. I'm not very good and am still pretty new to the game, but that's my advice as to where to start. Just try not to tilt and make sure you learn from all the mistakes you're bound to make :)

I tried Lulu but honestly, i'm pretty garbo when compared to Taric or any support i'm learning currently. Her kit is complex to the point where i'm actually forgetting some of what she does (like throwing pix on a minion) and being a total wuss when it means getting a crucial silence off because she's so darn squishy. I may try her again sometime but I don't think i'm ready, maybe when I become a smug Yasuo main I can Jokes aside thank you for your suggestion and time at least [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]
