AFKers and Rage quits needs to give Loss Forgiven

If you answered "NO" or "ITS MORE COMPLICATED" to the poll, I would REALLY appreciate you leaving a comment to explain your thinking. =]

I am going to be frank and honest about this, mostly because (I'll admit) I'm a little salty coming out of a game with a rage quitter.

I think it is incredibly unfair to penalize the 4 members of the team that have to lose LP for the actions (outside of the game environment) of one person. It is immensely frustrating and it takes away from the game experience in a completely negative way. The solution I would like to see implemented is that the members of the 4 man team are given loss forgiven while the afker is penalized with, at a minimum, a larger LP loss than normal.

Now I understand that there will be a lot of criticism of this opinion/solution, and I will try address them here.

First, the system would tell that it was a 4v5 (or 3v5....etc) the same way it determines the number of votes needed for a surrender. If you only have 4 people available for a vote (or 3....etc), then you will get loss forgiven for a game. So yes, the people that deliberately troll and stay connected but in base will not result in a loss forgiven. This will also not catch people that disconnect for a portion of the game, but return. We know that this can also contribute to a loss, and I suppose there could be a solution to this case also, but I'll leave that alone for the moment. I would be happy to discuss that in a comment should someone ask. Despite not being able to cover these things, this solution will still save a lot of people from frustration and unfair losses.

Now of course the second thing that would need to be addressed is possible abuse of the system (one person takes the loss so the other 4 get loss forgiven). I think making the penalties of disconnecting from a game more severe would help deter this kind of behavior; in solo queue, losing 80 LP (I'm just making up numbers) to give loss forgiven to 4 other people doesn't seem a course of action anyone would be willing to take. In addition, penalizing people (by banning accounts, low priority queue, etc) more severely (or more frequently) for disconnecting during games could also reduce this kind of behavior. In short, if the penalties are high enough, no one will be encouraged to abuse the system in this way.

I also need to address the people that do legitimately have a reason for a disconnect. Sometimes it happens; internet goes out, mom has to go to the hospital, thunderstorm knocks out power (although you really should take responsibility for this one and not play if there is risk of that....but I digress). My mentality doesn't really change from how things already exist. The general rule would still apply, if your disconnects are infrequent, then there is nothing to worry about. If a pattern develops, or the frequency increases dramatically, then action should be taken. However, and this is where my opinion deviates from the existing measures, even if the reason for the disconnect was out of your control, you still caused a completely unfair loss to 4 members of the community. Your teammates should still be exempt from losing LP, and you should still take a larger penalty because it is impossible to tell the reason for your disconnect.

Lastly, I should address the argument that 4v5 games are winnable and that giving loss forgiven to victims of disconnects encourages laziness and reduces the effort level of the players. Both of these things are certainly true; but the number of games won by 4 man teams is significantly less than the number lost. If you and your team are at the elo (or mmr) that you should be at, then there is no reasonable way you should win a 4v5. Ever. Encouraging people to essentially waste their time just further adds to the frustration of the situation. As for the laziness argument, I believe that leaving a game frustrated and annoyed because of a loss you had no control over is a much worse outcome than having 4 people "give up" when realistically they have no chance of winning. Because of my loss, I'm here typing this and afterwards, probably doing things not related to league. Had I won, I would probably continue to play. More to the point, if I wasn't frustrated in this way, I would also probably play another game. If I did play another game right now, I would probably perform worse than usual and not enjoy my experience as much. This, to me, is a far worse outcome of disconnects than players "giving up" on a losing game.

I would really like to discuss why this wouldn't be a good idea and, if it is a good idea, why it hasn't been implemented yet. I realize that I'm still a little pissed about losing a game like that, but I'd like to think that everything I've stated here is rational. Please, have at it =p

I put "its more complicated" because thats the excuse any Rioter would give you if they deemed to give you a response. It would be an abused system is another great excuse they use.

However in my own opinion it would be nigh impossible for servers to tell if the person who left either raged quitted or got dc'ed. I agree punishing all for the folly of one is stupid but it happens in game when one lane feeds so its logical that it occurs outside elf the game when one guy rage quits/afks/dc's.

My advice just keep praying to whatever god in your religion is in charge of luck and hope for the best.

I had hoped that I had addressed most of what you said in my wall of text that I tried to organize intelligently.

I don't think it would be abused if the penalties for disconnecting were more severe than now. For example, if you disconnected from a game, you would lose 3x the normal amount; instead of losing 18, you might lose 54 LP. That would make staying in the game and NOT rage quitting a better option.

Servers wouldn't be able to tell which it was, which is why the behavior will be discouraged through heavier penalties. It will be unfortunate for the true dc's, but will prevent abuse. If it is a true dc, it will be frustrating to have received a larger LP penalty. But as long as it isn't consistent, it won't seriously affect your experience. And if it is consistent, then you shouldn't be playing ranked anyway.

I know that personally, it would suck to lose close to 60 LP because my internet crapped out. But the reasons behind why this is the case make a strong enough argument that I would be okay with it. First, I believe that it is on me to own up to the fact that I disconnected, because the other 4 members of my team don't deserve to lose LP for a situation they can't influence in any way. I also accept the fact that this has to be a much larger penalty so people don't abuse it.

To be clear, I am not talking about a teammate that feeds, is toxic, or ignores his team then entire game. All of these things are bad, and reportable in their own right. I'm not trying to improve the game, I'm just trying to not have people penalized for an impossible situation. And just to be clear, a bad teammate is not an impossible situation. A disconnected teammate is.

I think this needs help in solo queue games. They clearly detect AFK now and when people quit out (leave buster and red names in post game overview).

I feel the phrase "Prefect is the enemy of good" applies, which describes this type of system. Make something "good" and don't wait for perfect.

The AFK player, always loses LP equal to a loss and counts as a loss. Doesn't matter the reason, thems the breaks.

People do actually DC, but it seems to be by FAR the exception rather than the rule.

Normal games don't need any special consideration, maybe some goofy icon you earn if you play enough games that other players leave games you play. Maybe not.

Team ranked wouldn't be forgiven since that's your team and you are responsible as a team to play the game, no matter the circumstance.

In solo queue ranked, if the team with less players wins, they get full LP. If the team with more players wins, give 1/2 or 1/3 LP to them, whatever seems fair to the community. Yeah, it's not full LP, but it prevents rewarding a team for coordinating with a troll on the other team to let them win.

If the team losses that has missing players, they lose no LP. If the team with more players loses, it's the same as a normal loss with LP loss and record.

This won't fix cases where a player leaves at the end of the game and you lose. Then you report them, just like now.

Again this is good, not perfect.

Seems like a reasonable system.
