@Riot Want real "Strategic Diversity"? The only way is to destroy the very idea of"Carries"!
**I do not believe that we need to break up the Marksman + Support meta, what we need to do is change why Marksmen are brought to the game! **
To truly have strategic diversity we need to remove the entire idea of late game carries, rework all carry itemization, then give all champions powerful and diverse roles. Even with all the changes preseason the usefulness of all non-carry champions in team fights comes down to, “can I protect my carry(s)?” “Can I kill the enemy carry(s)?” “Can I set up a guaranteed kill for my team on the enemy carry(s)?” If one of those isn’t true 100% of the time you will not be picked.
Take
for example, her strategic niche should be a disruptor, forcing enemies out of position, breaking up their careful plans, forcing valuable cooldowns and buying your team time and positioning advantage.
Too bad for her the only thing that matters for dive champions is killing the enemy carry(s). Her strategic niche is criminally undervalued because of how incredibly warping carries are. If you cannot kill the enemy carry(s) very quickly you will die and leave your team in a bad 4v5.
is even worse off, he excels at killing tanked up champions and dueling, completely worthless as long as carries utterly dominate the metagame.
IF YOU WANT STRATEGIC DIVERSITY YOU MUST ALLOW FOR OFFENSIVE STRATEGIES BEYOND NUKE THE ENEMY CARRY(S) OR DIE AND DEFENSIVE STRATEGIES BEYOND PROTECT THE CARRY(S) OR LOSE.
The Fixes
-
Marksmen should be brought to the game to provide consistent ranged damage to champions and objectives across the entirety of the game while synergising with their teams composition. They should not to melt any objective or player in a few seconds regardless of their opponent’s itemization late game. For this to happen damage multiplication needs to be toned down (removing crit entirely would be just fine in my opinion (obviously some champions would need to be reworked)) so that other champions have options besides kill the enemy marksman or die. I lean towards the idea that marksmen should be much more important to taking towers and sieging than any other class.

All melee carries must be re-purposed as light fighters, tanks, disruptor, assassins or ad casters. There is no way to make a hyper multiplicative, squishy melee champion that builds pure offense and deals sustained damage balanced and interesting.
-
Mage hypercarries need to be re-tuned and given other niches.
-
Fights need to take longer period. There needs to be time for people to actually make decisions and react to their enemies. (This is very different than having a bunch of bruisers pound on each other for half an hour until the bruiser with the most items wins.) A right now true counter play vs assassin champions is almost impossible, to be successful they must blow up their target(s) instantly or die.
-
Melee champions in general need to have more active defence abilities, requiring timing and precision to survive. (Returning to S2 when a fully built tank could completely ignore the enemy team is not the answer.)
-
Bruisers need to be experimented with, I think there is a niche for “tanky dps” but they need to be a lot more ability reliant and less designed around being a wall of stats. Melee itemization needs a massive overhaul in general, right now a balanced mix of offence and defence is extremely underwhelming on most (non mage) melees.
-
All champions need to have varied states of success and failure in teamfights. This relates back to my initial point about non carry champions being nonviable unless they can directly and dramatically impact their carries survival or the enemy carries demise.
Obviously this is a major undertaking that will require many reworks and patches, but it is obvious that if league is ever going to reach Riots lofty design goals carries must be dialed back significantly.
