Honest thoughts on Azir

MasterPrankster··2 votes·924 views

So first off i don't claim to be a pro, not even relatively close. (Silver 3) Recently however, i decided to pick azir back up and ive been practicing him. He is by far my favorite champion ive ever played with. He matches my playstylle perfectly. I've even mastered his WEQ combo and use it all the time for jukes and tower dives! :)

I have some questions about him though that i need a more experienced opinion on.

  1. Do you think he will be nerfed? I can't be so good that i have a 68% win rate (Summoners Rift) with him 3 weeks after picking him up so he has to be a Secret OP.
  2. If so, what do you think will be nerfed? I think it will be extended cooldowns on his E to limit his escape/mobility.
  3. Can someone please explain why Nashor's tooth is not viable? Some experienced players claim its better than athene's. Can i have some numbers/experienced reasoning on either Athene's or Nashors? I usually use Athenes but i want to know if something matches my playstyle of a more aggressive laning phase.
  4. Finally, What bird is Azir?

  1. I doubt it. A lot of people had serious trouble mastering the bird right, with all the complicated & risky combos. Don't forget the never-ending bugs.

  2. Look 1.

  3. Azir is still considered a squishy AP caster, so putting him as an AP autoattack bruiser will leave him very vulnerable, since going autoattack-marksman style with no sustain isn't such a good idea. It's best going bursty instead of DPS.

  4. My guess would be a falcon :3

  1. Azir is probably based on the Egyptian God Horus.

i can tell you what birds he is not :)

He not going to get nerfed due to this high skill cap, and if he does it wont be a huge nerf. Azir is also my favorite, and i have, hmm, lets call it little trick to win almost any lane with him.

MasterPrankster1 votes

What trick would that be? I'm always interested in learning new techniques.

I like to ult people inside of jungle camps and let my soldiers put them to the spear as they squirm around.

Another thing is sneaking behind to their backline in a teamfight when we're in a lane, activating a turret and ulting them towards my team.

Triple kill ez win.

If i could PM it to you i would, but its my secret :)

  1. Most likely
  2. I don't play him enough to know.
  3. I believe it's because he can't make use of the on-hit damage, so the item is overpriced for the stats it gives him.
  4. I'm not sure, but I know 11 Birds That Are Not Azir

dont listen to them, nashors is beast, but you should get WOTA with it for sustain. your autos proc spellvamp. even with the 1/3 reduction for its AOE, the sustain is comperable to having a sceptor on jinx using a rocket.

anyone that tells you not to get nashors who isnt a complete idiot says that lack of sustain on a DPS is bad. they are right. so get wota.

MasterPrankster1 votes

When you say the autos proc spellvamp, are you telling me that the Soldier's attacks proc the spellvamp? If so that would be useful but i also heard that Nashor's DOESNT proc on soldier's AA. HAven't tested it but it's marked as confirmed so it seems like a waste of gold/item slot.

What are some pro's to the Nashor's besides its stats that other items can offer?

maikokk1 votes

your soldiers proc all spell effects as AOE damage. they do not proc on hit effects like nashors. that being said, nashors is beyond gold efficient on azir with the base stats alone. this is because azir can use every stat to his benefit and then some.

even without accounting for azirs passive the base stats are 117.74% gold efficient, without its passive. also, azir converts CDR into attack speed, so it is even more so.

also sometimes you have reason to aa without soldiers. doing a little extra damage in those AAs is an added bonus, but def not the reason you should buy it. the fact is Azir is a dps machine with attack speed, because his soldiers AA's scale with your level.

there isnt a single item you can buy that is more efficient for azir. period.

also worth noting that you should never buy nashors for its passive. buy it if you can use all the base stats. its passive is way to weak to worry about how it will effect your damage per attack. the answer is it barely will

i can answer 3 very well for you

Nashors tooth gives a lot less AP than morellonomicon AND it costs more gold

The advantage of Nashors tooth is supposed to be the on-hit proc, but Azir's soldiers do not grant this. Now despite this, some people believe that that the attack speed on the item is enough to make it an efficient buy. They are wrong in 99.9% of cases, however. The attack speed on Nashors will only outscale a Morellonomicon in damage after the 4th auto attack following your Q. It's very rare for an opponent to stand inside the range of a single soldier for 4 attacks - most of Azir's damage actually comes from his Q and a single auto (maybe 2) following the Q, before people run outside of the range of his soldier to escape his damage. You'll find that the burst of Morellonomicon is simply better than Nashors in almost every situation.

Morellonomicon is certainly a buy i've heard about but haven't given any serious thought. I'll have to pick one up on my next game and see how it will change things up. It would be useful because Azir isn't much of a burst champion until later in the game so denying their healing power would be good in teamfights. It's a good item to rush early on but here i pose another question for you.

I can tell you're a morell fan so tell me this, What benefits does item 3165 offer that item 3174 doesn't, and vice versa?

Athenes is just bad right now, unfortunately.

It provides more mana regen than morellonomicon when you have around 55% of your mana missing, but most champions can't afford to drop below around 30% mana before a fight because it means they can't use their whole burst combo before going oom. So athenes has a very small window of use where it provides more mana regeneration than morello. On the other hand morello provides static regen that is equal to what Athenes provides starting at that 55% missing mana mark, but it also gives you grievous wounds and 20 more AP at a significantly lower cost.

Probably the only time you would want to build athenes right now is if you're a very immobile champion like Xerath and you're up against a Leblanc.
