Just kidding. Probably the best update of the year.

Still not enough of a nerf. The shield it gives is still to strong. I would have prefered they nerf that rather than the puny 10 MR nerf and loss of attack speed.

25% as is pretty big. Although I will still build it on Yasuo for the free life steal and shield. Champs like graves it doesn't really affect.

Celeste Benal2 votes

I've built i ton Yasuo since release because MR+AD is a rare combination at the time. He needed it vs all those AP midlaners. Its still a good choice for AD mid laners vs AP.

KyroRayne9 votes

The shield is nerfed by 10 HP as well because it scales on Bonus MR

Edit: To do a little more math on this, 50 MR - 40 MR

So assassins and other squishies don't get MR/lvl. We will go base MR for this.

Instead of having 80 MR ( 44.4% reduction), you get 70 MR ( 41.2% reduction). So with an average HP of 1800, at 80 MR they have 3240 HP against Magic Damage compared to 3061 HP at 70 MR.

So that 10 MR nerf is bigger than people recognize.

Well i think you're right, considering how tanky all bruisers are right now, but ADCS would be lost without it, in my opinion.

What they really need to work on is an actual MR item that adcs only could use, then they could properly change Maw of Malmortius, but that's probably not going to happen :P.

That's anti-CC, not anti-deletion.

Cleanse for anti CC.

MR and lifesteal for anti deletion.

It already provides a large amount of survivability right off the bat, and if they really need something to keep them from getting bursted, they should have to sacrifice some offensive capability (either a bruiser oriented maw or a banshees).

Very often the same thing.

UrPalAl1 votes

But not always.

Shadowjak1011 votes

Depends on skill level. If you're a really good ADC and position well with good kiting skills, CC could be the only thing that kills you.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

Anti deletion is BANSHEE.

What's the point of playing a fucking assassin if an adc can just build a single offtank item and crush you alone ? No, he has to dedicate a full slot to "antideletion" if he wants to actually survive an assassin's burst (or trust his team).

UrPalAl1 votes

Sure, but now thanks to the nerfs to Maw, ADC's now have to give up a bit of damage to gain survivability. Secondly, an ADC often depends on building full damage and fighting from the back line. Maw's job is to allow the ADC to survive the initial burst so that allies actually have a chance to respond.

Astôlfo1 votes

Uh, no they don't. Maw still is stupid fucking strong.

UrPalAl1 votes

Not saying the shield isn't a bit too powerful, but we should probably wait to see how the item performs after the nerf before making more calls too soon.

Astôlfo1 votes

The AS wasn't really the problem, nor is 5 AP/MR or whatever it is they cut off that big. The shield being up every 90s to absorb a crapton of AP damage was the problem.

UrPalAl1 votes

I think the idea though is that damage is being sacrificed for survivability now. Again, let's wait and see how that plays out.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

How about positioning better? I mean i don't think Maw was ever suggested to be an ADC item. It's for melee bruisers, to offer some dmg together with defensive stats so they could survive a dive into 5 enemies.

UrPalAl1 votes

Well that's not how the itemization works in this game. Deal with it.

Shac Norris1 votes

I dont play enough adc lol

I meant a ranged-only type of item, but yeah scimitar works.

kile1475 votes

Banshees is better for ADC than it is for tanks. Tanks are almost always going to be eating more than one spell, whereas blocking an assassin's initiator will probably save an ADC life.

Astôlfo9 votes

Uh, ADCs should not be able to use it. If they are lost without this, which they aren't, so be it.

Shac Norris1 votes

Making it melee-only would force Riot to actually balance the game itself instead of having the whole balance of the game around 1 item..

WTFRWARDS3 votes

ADCS on bot lane arent buying this item. Its top/mid/jungle adcs rushing it. Also since any kinda of magic dmg, such as Xinx E could proc it, it gets absurd. FFS make it an active and people would probably calm down.

StealthWarden17 votes

at least its not a 4th trinity force for AD's.... I mean my god man, the ad rework left pretty much every item with a triforce list of shit they give you.

Me: Should i get life steal or more resistance? Plus theres that stupid taric stun that keeps screwing me over....HHHMMMMMMMM.....

"salty" Me: Oh right....item 3139 solves ALL of my problems and sacrifices NOTHING

Me: Gosh i really need some surviveability but, i had better start building some armor penetration or im going to be useless come mid to late game.

"salty" Me: Oh right....item 3156

and the saga continues

Still not enough of a nerf. The shield it gives is still to strong. I would have prefered they nerf that rather than the puny 10 MR nerf and loss of attack speed.

The shield WAS reduced. The shield amount is based on your bonus MR. You lose 10 MR, so that's 10 less shield, plus you take less burst before it procs (because of the lower MR).

Astôlfo1 votes

Not enough.

Canastus20 votes

They still need to nerf Hexdrinker, that item is actually the biggest offender when it comes to sheer cost-effectiveness. Being able to win lane by simply getting a 1300g item should not be a thing, at all. I don't get how they can still pretend this item is in any way balanced.

Keti2 votes

hexdrinker on its sheer stats is barely 100% gold efficient. Seekers armguard ranges between 86% and 138% depending on your stack count. After you farm a few waves armguard will give better raw stats and as long as you stick to a poke pattern and not an all in pattern (like mages should do vs AD mids anyways) seekers will outperform hexdrinker. Hexdrinker is not that efficient, players just seem to like to play into its strengths.

YCitizenSnipsY3 votes

Back before they remade MAW, Hexdrinker was the only reason people even bought it, most of the time the item was never even finished and remained hexdrinker.

Keti1 votes

that's because it gave tons of AD based on missing HP and was horrible on everyone but olaf/tryndamere/a few others who stayed at low hp a lot.

reworking the low hp bonus into a bonus when the shield pops along with making it less of the item's power budget was a very good and smart change imo. Old maw you had to buy basically with the intent of cheesing someone with low hp to be worth, rather than an AD/MR item to combat magical burst.

YCitizenSnipsY2 votes

Thats my point. You are using statics to call Hexdrinker inefficient. Ok maybe it doesn't pass rito's gold efficiency test, it was still the only redeeming thing about Maw, ans was often built without out being upgraded becasue it alone was strong enough.

Shac Norris2 votes

Totally with you on that one.

But we all know that Riot love their Zed's.

BakugoBestBoy10 votes

Nerf needed for maw? Yes. Was this the correct nerf. Hell no.

Maw needs to be a functioning defensive item for champions who can't afford to build item 3139 or item 3102 early in the game. Nerfing the defensive stats of an item you should be buying for the defensive stats is stupid. Remove the armor pen and drop the amount of AD it gives you and make it give 50MR again.

PROJECT Katarìna7 votes

I prefered if they just gave armguards a mini zhonyas over nerfing maw

Athenes Lulu15 votes

But then armguards would cost 2.4k instead of 1.2k because the active is sooooooo powerful and therefore should cost at least 1k :)))))))))))))))))

PROJECT Katarìna2 votes

or make it a sheild for only physical damage

Jari6 votes

A lot of the time I'll see people just by Hexdrinker and forget about it until late game.

This only promotes that more.

Sorry, but its not that good...right direction, but still needs more nerfs.

Attackspeed wasn't what's breaking the item.

Its not too far out of line now, but its still got a good amount more extraneous power, especially for how hard it counters AP burst champs.

The attack speed wasn't the strongest thing about the item but it's a good removal all the same. First of all it makes the item unattractive to ADCs, and second of all it makes it so the shield is only defensive rather than offensive. It was really stupid that a mage trying to kill an AD character could actually achieve nothing other than giving them a significant DPS increase for the rest of the fight. Now it's just sustain which is something.

CasterGilgamesh5 votes

hex-drinker can burn in hell for all i care ap stuff always get nerfs while ad stuff just gets a small slap on the wrist its been like this since the start of the game

Profirix3 votes

I would prefer if maw lost some AD and kept the MR. Do whatever you want with the passive. It was way too powerful.

NazZomLord3 votes

I like the attack speed nerf, but not the base MR I guess we will see

Raelaem2 votes

I was about to say... lol

RyzeRework2 votes

the problem without is without maw ad champions wouldnt stand a chance against ap burst champions lb would always 1 shot you kat would get reset after reset ect. the problem with hourglass is the active is too strong to make it cheap for the early game assassins ect. delete both of these items and noone complains because lets be honest first buying a qss isnt going to help jack shit early game

GenghisEmo2 votes

No.

AD will still be strong as always. ADCs crit just as easilly, and items still cheaper. AD Assassins can burst just as hard, and AD items cheaper. AD Jauggernauts will be unchanged.

AP now arent at a huge disadvantage. Now it is slightly more even, in theory (AD still seems to have HUGE advantage).

AD still has QSS for cc removal. Yes AP still get it, but buying sash gives no AP.

Squidward Dab1 votes

This entire season was favored to AD champs and leaving the AP champs in the dust. AD champs acting as if seeker's suddenly nullifies every single bit of AD damage when in reality, so many AD items got armor penetration so the armor is irrelevant.

Goosetard1 votes

One time I kept the rage passive up for so long sustaining in lane that the hexdrinker passive was ready again before rage wore off.
