Should AP based champions start with a higher base AP than 0?

It wasn't until recently messing around in custom games that I noticed, every champion starts with 0 base AP. This doesn't really make sense to me when so many champions scale with AP only. It seems that AP/mages would should start with some kind of base AP that is not 0. Or is there some behind the scenes coding going on that I don't know about in which all champions abilities actually use AP to a certain extent? I'm not saying they should change this, it's just a part of the game that I don't really understand. Just curious why AD champs get boosts to their starting AD, but none of the mages get boosts to their starting AP.

AP starts at 0, because AP items grant so much more AP than AD items AD. it's honestly just a balance thing.

And technically, Galio starts with 16 AP, not 0.

People start with base ad so that auto attacks can deal damage at the start of the game, ap on the other hand does not apply to autos (most of the time) AND spells have base damage. If they were to start some camps with ap their bases would suffer directly to compensate so it would net zero change (except viegar would hit them harder)

They have base damage on their abilities.

Ahh, that makes more sense now. Like I said, just wanted a better understanding of why it is the way it is. Thanks for the information!
