My question is, is Lulu and actual viable solo laner in ranked? And if not, is she a sought after support? My damage was pretty good for a support class and tons of utility for group fights as well as amazing kiting!
I wanted to ask before I spent the RP to unlock her.

Lulu got nerfed and is falling out of favor everywhere. Nobody enjoys playing nerfed champions!
Support, she has issues with sustain lanes, she's fine otherwise. Solo lane, she crushes melees. She's weak to champions faster than her (i.e. Signed) or who can nullify her escape (i.e.: J4). She doesn't need to win her lane to be useful, as long as hypercarries see play she'll always be of use.
If you're looking for a god tier/high tier 1 champion, she's not for you. If you want a fun champion that is somewhere between low tier 1 and high tier 2 she might be worth investing into.
I did notice she had some mana problems for sure!

Now I have to disagree with most people. Even with the nerfs, I still play her top, mid, and support, recently I even outplayed a Fizz in mid because you can't burst down a good lulu. So even with the nerfs, I still play her in solo lane roles, give her the mana regeneration that she needs and have a blast. Ganking a lulu is a terror for the enemy jungle and so much fun for your jungler. She has everything I want in a support and meets my wants for solo laners as well. When your Q and E lands, turn em into a bunny and basic attack them until they retreat. Works like a charm. She is personally one of my favorite champions and I'm glad you enjoyed her. :)
you must be new here. yes lulu is strong as support and a solo lane. she is a supportive mage like to orianna and similarly doenst have many bad matchups (mostly going even or better)
her biggest thing is the utility built into her kit so has lots of build paths: 40% cdr for more spell casts (q slows and w speed ups) high ap for bigger shields and ults lich bane for more burst attack speed (its important to point out that her magic damage from pix scales with ap)
she does a great job of protecting carries as a support or a mage, the advantage of being a mage is you get more gold
