So... what was the reason for Morde to have increased experience in duo lane?
Cannot think of any good reason.
Cannot think of any good reason.
The actual reason was because Riot expected ranged ADCs and Supports to heavily focus Morde while he wasn't really able to sustain his shield forcing him to back off a lot more than his ranged counterpart.
This was a bandaid for the sake of giving a melee champion an equivalent advantage compared to the high range of Marksmen expecially since Jinx and Caitlyn where the top picks when they were working on him. Meta shifts and actual numbers proved to be in favor of Mordekaiser and now we'll likely have to wait for the worlds to end before Riot gives any insight about what they have in store for him.
The extra exp is literally the only thing that allows Mord to go bot.
Because without it the shitty experiment/failure that is mord wouldn't work
The experiment worked. The problem is it worked too well (can't do anything against a tanky morde, so might as well not try and hit him; So basically no lane interaction, which they DO NOT WANT.)
I would say it DIDNT work. That's why they crammed an unfair passive with zero counterplay in him (even though riot supposedly hates zero counterplay)
Gimmick! Like the dragon they tacked onto his ult.
Because he's a mage, and they need the early levels to be able to do anything, much more so than ADC's.

Even when he is totally capable of pushing waves on waves from lvl 3?
Something wrong here

Without the exp bonus, it is extremely easy for a long ranged adc to zone him to the point where he ends up lower level than them and fails HARD. With xp bonus, even zoned, the ones he gets early will keep him on equal footing level wise for the first few levels when he will have his spells and can generate the shield to push back. He then will end up ahead level wise.
The problem is many adcs, either because they dont work well with their support or are lacking thwir own aggression, aren't zoning him hard enough so what actually happens is he levels up faster from the start. Levels one and two he is super weak and vulnerable to an all in from someone like blitz, thresh, leona or Naut. It's a hard to balance passive that's for sure.
I played a few times against him as support or adc i was supprise how weak he is at early lvls. I expected that his shield will block all my harras, but it didnt.
The problem with this is that the passive was obviously intended as a solution for Morde being a botlane champion now. Problem is, if Morde couldn't survive the lane without the passive, then the champion clearly has no place being there. Adding the passive after that point is literally just the developer trying to shoehorn him into botlane.
So is bot lane destined to be ranged only? They explicitly went in with the goal of making a melee bot lane carry viable, which means something had to give in order to let him be there. Making him level faster wasn't the only option, but in retrospect, it was something of an elegant one.
If they flat out buff him to the point where he can take hits on the way into the fight, then he ends up too strong by endgame or when fed. If they give him strong baselines but weak scaling, he's blown out of lane at low levels before he ranks his skills up or gets played in weird roles like Ekko did when his baseline values were huge. Giving him mobility hides the problem in addition to weakening his theme, plus then everyone screams about mobility creep. Furthermore, as a spell-based melee character, he's more reliant on his abilities than his gold income.
Making him level faster means they can give him ADC-esque scaling and baseline values while ensuring that he's tough enough to survive lane phase. Another option would have been to give his abilities six ranks, but start with a point in each of them.
I think that if you want to make a melee bot carry viable, you need to be looking at a champion's kit and not slapping a passive on them that breaks a fundamental part of the game. Yasuo is a good example of how a melee adc could work - mobility helps him avoid damage, and Wind Wall can flat-out negate a large portion of it from the enemy ADC, giving him an opportunity to trade. Plus, he's got high damage thanks to the passive so when he finally does get in range, he deals a good chunk of damage.
Mordekaiser meanwhile wasn't designed to be a botlane carry. He was never meant to survive against an adc/support lane, but CertainlyT was intent on putting Morde there anyways - hence the XP passive. Realistically, if we wanted a melee carry in the botlane, it should have been an entirely new champion. Taking an existing one that cannot survive a duo lane and whose playstyle is intended for mid or top and forcibly taking on an XP passive is honestly terrible design.
Melee champions and ability based champions do not function after leaving lane without solo lane XP. He is both.
Because as a melee carry, he gets absolutely rekt early by ranged carries. So he has to have some method to keep him viable until he can scale later. Otherwise, he would be level 3 when his lane opponents hit level 6.
Except he didn't get wrecked by carries due to other changes. I've poked him super hard and he never budges from lane ever, not to mention has a lot of sustain and can start very tanky.
he's a lot squishier than before
like, objectively his base stats are all worse
Runes fix that issue.
They decided that they didn't want anyone to play him anymore, so they let CertainlyT get rid of him.
This was put in place originally cause it was assumed that ranged ADCs or even Supps would just harass him out of lane, since he's a melee mage, and he'd be denied tons of exp early game, so he needed some way of keeping up with this.
The problem is that this was entirely incorrect and Morde can easily push out lanes and get almost as much cs even when being harassed and still come out lvls ahead of his counterpart ADC. Not too mention, even when not ahead in levels he can easily implode any ADC who gets too close or is pulled in/cc'd by Morde's supp, and when this inevitably happens at some point he gains a MASSIVE lead in exp that only gets worse since he always gets full exp no matter what, making a snowbally as fuck champion even more snowbally.
I mean, the worlds shoutcasters have even said "well that's just not fair," so hopefully in light of literally everyone knowing how awful of a design flaw that was and the fact that he's nearly 100% pick/ban in worlds and I think still 100% win rate in those few matches he makes it through Riot will either heavily nerf him or rework him again, cause honestly this rework for him is simply stupid.

yes pretty much this
It's the only thing that allowed Morde do be decent in a duo lane. My imagination says they experimented and ranged ADCs were wrecking him with poke, so Riot simply gives him literally an unfair level advantage. No matter what champ you are, if you're 2 - 3 levels above an ADC their poke isn't going to do jack.
because unlike a classic adc, morde is not all about auto attacks. he fights with abilities. That makes leveling with morde more important. Adc dont really care about levels they jsut get massive gold and get items that cuase their aa to be huge.
The only feasible reason I can think of is they wanted the Pentakill team to be a full team
LITERALLY THE ONLY REASON
i guess they feared morde might be to strong in a sololane if they balanced him around bot without a huge aditional advantage in a duolane.
