So, Any reason why Butcher Bridge is still not an official ARAM map?

Macilento··171 votes·4,910 views

We got it last summer with the bilgeWater event. I thought for sure that that kind of map would remain in rotation with the normal Freljord aram map because it was super cool, and because Riot put so much work into it. It's such a waste. Just implement it already.

Just keep the same Aram queue as always, just put 50% chance to be in Frljord or Butcher Birdge. I don't think anyone would complain about that

I have installed a custom BB skin with Wooxy, works only for me (everyone else sees HA as always), it has everything including the turrets, shopkeepers etc and I have also installed a Bilgewater Music + Announcer combo. It's sad to see fans do things that RIOT should have done themselves [zombie-nunu-bummed]

Your with me. I installed everything that you said. Too bad it's not directly from riot.

whoa what hold up bilgewater announcer? send me a link to that homie i've been looking everywhere for it

FastAsHeck1 votes

First of all, you must download Wooxy, the application. FYI it doesn't need login credentials or anything, it is safe. http://mapskins.com/wooxy/

Download and run the setup, then open the application and click Skins. I don't think having the League client open matters, but close it to be sure.

The specific skins are here: Announcer Music Butcher's Bridge

Now simply take the downloaded zip files (don't need to extract them) and drag them on the skins panel to add them. You must Install them (it's called installing, but it's more like activating it), you do so by clicking each skin and clicking Install at the bottom.

And you are done! Test it on a custom, then go have fun with your shiny new toys.

That's Butcher's Bridge.

And there's probably some technical aspects that make such things difficult; remember BB replaced Howling Abyss. It's likely they effectively swapped things out for that to work. In this case they'd potentially have to make an entirely new queue or add tech in to the already existing queue to make this work, and depending on how the server handles what it's supposed to load for individual games it might be way more difficult to have two maps in the same queue than you'd think. And it's not feasible to add an exclusive queue for BB because it'd split the ARAM player-base and require its own servers.

I know we all want Butcher's Bridge back, but there's probably some tech reason behind why it's not feasible at the moment or not easily achievable at the moment.

Ye sorry fixed the title. But i do not remember any Red talking about tech issues and such.

Having both maps be available and a random number generator choosing the map upon queue or match start is not so incredibly arcane... It'd be nice to see some clarification on this as there's been a dead radio silence ever since the event ended in regards to Butcher's Bridge. I fail to see how a map with that many art resources poured into it would just disappear overnight because of a coding issue.

Except many toaster users were unable to play the map.

Funnily enough, BB Did NOT Replace HA on PBE, It was a Seperate Queue

and when the new map was still well new they had that up AND the old map. Not only is SR bigger it has a bigger sample size

This is would be a solid argument if this wasn't already resolved in the past. A long long time ago, Summoner's Rift would randomly choose between Summer and Winter themes, during events such as Halloween, the winter would be swapped out for a Halloween version. IIRC for a while there was an Autumn version of the map without the Halloween decor. likewise there was also a Christmas variant.

In the past, it was not an issue to have multiple map themes on the same map that would be chosen randomly.

There is no legitimate reason a game as successful as League of Legends can't have themes for a casual mode like ARAM.

On topic, I'd like to see Butcher's Bridge returned, but I'd also like to see the Proving Grounds bridge return as well. 33% chance any of the three would be played sounds great, a company as big as Riot should be able to do it.

Sharjo5 votes

Said maps had very little different though, essentially amounting to a new texture and maybe a few new models thrown about here and there. where as Butcher's Bridge has so many different elements to it, including different voice overs for the shopkeepers, that just having a swap would take far more work than the Summoner's Rift variants.

UltraFireFX2 votes

<rant>If you have no fucking clue what you are talking about then please, shut the hell up or state that you are guessing, 'a new texture and maybe a few new models'? Do you even know the difference? Ugh.

The whole map is different but that doesn't mean anything at all, the voice files are as easy if not, easier than, the texture files, Gangplank did a voice over for Summoner's Rift too during the event and that was easy.

It's not done because they don't play the LCS on ARAM, simple as that</rant> (Sorry for my language but people guessing like this really gets up my nose)

UrPalAl4 votes

Damn, I guess it's all easy according to you. Well shit, I'm gonna start working at Riot starting tomorrow. Thanks man, you clearly know what you're talking about.

UltraFireFX1 votes

Well actually your not going to start working at Riot Games tomorrow because they currently don't have an opening for people who don't know what they are doing.

Also, I didn't say it was the easiest thing in the world but considering how big the company is, if they put their minds to it, they could do it, the hardest thing of all is actually designing the map (which the community does (maybe not to their standards but they are individuals, not a company like Riot Games))

P.S. It would most likely be implemented very similar to Minecraft; but instead of you selecting the 'resource pack' it would tell you which one to use and it would have been downloaded in the launcher like any other textures, skins, ect..

UrPalAl1 votes

That's a lot of change, not to mention that the games file size would need to change to accompany an entire new map, which would cause a LOT of problems. Secondly, there are a lot of other more important things the companies probably worried about, such as finishing the alpha for the client their currently working on, or maybe even working on future map projects.

But i think we casn agree that that map is a waste right now. It doesn'tmake sense for Riot to put so many resources into that, just for seeing it 1 month

UrPalAl1 votes

It will probably just turn into a summer map. It's winter, so, just wait.

Pyrodinium1 votes

It is most likely due to time and effort.

Sure, they might be able to change it with little effort, but even then it would take a decent amount of time to pull off, due to the duration of any required QA cycles, which are mandatory unless you are willing to risk the Butcher's Bridge floating over the Howling Abyss background or any other glitch.

Now, the fact that they can do it doesn't mean that they should do it right now; It all comes down to priorities.

The new client is under construction right now, and the plan is to release it during the first part of the year. Any work done into the actual client would delay the release of the new one. Unless you are talking about features that provide a huge value (like the new Dynamic Queue, or the new report interface), it is probably not worth the trouble.

And let's face it, hooking up variant maps for the ARAM queue is very low priority in that regard, since is a cosmetic change, affects only a small subset of players, and does nothing aside from looking awesome (although damn, it looks really awesome).

UltraFireFX1 votes

You've got a good point, not many people do play ARAM, it does needs a bit of attention, however, because when Butchers Bridge was out, it was played more, even with the event, it was played more.

P.S. I doubt there would be a glitch where it would have miss-matched textures, it's like saying Minecraft might miss-match resource pack textures when using more than one at a time, it would implemented very similar to Minecraft but instead of you selecting the 'resource pack' it would tell you which one to use and it would have been downloaded in the launcher.

Pyrodinium1 votes

Depends on how the system is set up. Remember that League of Legends is a game that faces a non-trivial amount of tech debt.

For example, we sometimes have bugs when a skin glitches and returns to the champion's base texture (over the skin's model), or sometimes Legendary and Ultimate skins start playing the base sound effects and dialogues.

A mutable map might face this kind of issues without adequate QA (plus any new tech required to make it work in the first place).

Theres a program called wooxy you can use to reskin your maps and they have BB.

The map choice should be randomized between BB and HA. Nothing more to say. Easy peasy

I believe a Rioter said, in regards to these kinds of maps, that putting in random rotations for these new kinds of maps/modes causes an unnecessary and dangerous amount of strain on the servers. This result is due to all of the different kinds of animations and scripts running at one time.

I honestly find very hard to belive that. I do not think it's a tech problem whatsoever.

UltraFireFX2 votes

The animations and scripts run on the client, not the server, and also, it may have been 'dangerous' then, but that doesn't absolutely mean that is still is now.

Why would you ever make permanent an awesome map/mode you made? Like....that sounds dumb, right Dota 2?

I think Riot plans to add some weather/ seasonal effects to SR and Aram. Rumors though

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

I think they might be working on other map skins right now, either another for ARAM or possibly one for SR and they're waiting to finish those before they implement Butcher's Bridge back into ARAM. I think there was something on the PBE recently that talked about a Crystal Scar map skin or something (Either a new skin for Dominion or a skin for another map to make it look like the Crystal Scar).

criizzash1 votes

That sounds great, but in the case of Crystal Scar (and Dominion), it needs more than just a new skin...

chipi991 votes

So you want a 50% chance for peoples toasters to explode mid game or not to connect at all?

PixTron1 votes

Not a 50% chance, because then people would just waste their time, everyone knows that the Butcher's Bridge is a million times better than the Freljord one will ever be in a thousand years (that map is boring as fuck and just awfully colorless).

But I agree, they should add this map back in without it being a yearly thing, and add even more maps into the game (like a Shurima-esq Dominion).

If DOTA 2's Source 2 Engine can help you create any map of nearly any theme within a week or 2, then Riot really needs to step up their game and worlds, I mean, if they even care enough to let us see their entire Runeterra world for real (instead of just artwork and making us dream about it).

Steelclaw1 votes

Are there any non-cosmetic differences between the Howling Abyss and Butcher's Bridge, or is essentially a different map skin (including voices, etc)?

If there are no FUNCTIONAL differences, wouldn't it be possible for each player to select the map they wish to play on during champ select and see that on their client? One person could see HA, have their poros, while another person would see BB with wharf rats, etc.

Seriously, how often do people in chat talk about the map? If someone said "Don't forget to feed the poro!" I think we'd all know what they meant despite their appearance. Of course in addition to the two selections you could also have a "random" button to pick between the two maps. If this is possible, a separate ARAM queue wouldn't be needed.

And when it's back champion mastery on ARAM, please.
