@Riot Why can't you put the same context like at Boards/Reddit to Patch Notes?

If no one understood what I meant, this is what Riot commented about the reason for buffing Ezreal's W:

Now that his update's been out for a little while wanted to share a few thoughts on Ezreal: > > - His AD build's performing pretty solidly, particularly given the amount his play rate's shot up, which tends to depress performance for a while as less experienced players get on a champ. We estimate that build's in a spot where it's balanced, or possibly slightly strong long term once this players have more experience with the kit changes.

  • His AP by contrast's looking weaker than it was pre update.
  • We're looking at buffing his W rank up damage as a result, given AD Ezreal maxes that last and AP Ezreal maxes it first or second. That will likely be in 8.22.
  • We're avoiding putting more power into AP ratios because we're already seeing the double tear builds be pretty powerful and giving him more value for AP pushes all his builds towards double tear as the way to go, removing variety.

First point looks a lot more sensible, right? Now look at what Riot commented in the Patch Note:

https://eune.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/patch/patch-821-notes#patch-ezreal

Ez's new W isn't packing as much of a punch as we'd like.

Of course, you will most likely get more ridiculous repeated questions again since most of the readers aren't avid Boards/Reddit users. Why not just place what you just said during pre-PBE release into the Patch Notes itself? That would save up loads of time, rather than posting the same old lazy & non-descriptive notes like "omg this guy too strong, needs nerfs".

Translation costs.

Dev corner can be as in-depth as it wants because it's speaking to only an english audience that might get translated by a fan.

Patch notes have a deadline (2-ish weeks after the PBE and finalized by around 3 days before the patch drops/is locked) and have to be translated into some absurd amount of languages, so they can't go too much in-depth or risk missing the date.

Yeah, but the thing is the explanation is so empty it might as well not be there. It's not about one being short version of the other, it's that one is proper explanation that is reasonable, the other is "We want it to deal more damage". It's completely two different points. Saying "AP Ezreal is underperforming compared to AD Ezreal, we're buffing W base damage which AP Ezreal maxes first while AD Ezreal does not." is also one sentence that wouldn't take too much translating and conveys their point better.

Additionally, we used to have long explanations and somehow the translation costs were magically non-existent back then? They didn't remove them to switch resources, they removed them because barely anyone read them all. Simple sentence that conveys the main point is better. It's just that they went to text that is redundant as it doesn't explain anything we wouldn't see (of course you want it to hit better, I can see you are buffing damage) while in itself misses the point.

Even one sentence can have quite a far-reaching effect.

Let's say you add that one sentence. All fine and good right? Except that wording doesn't translate too well into French. So you have to reword it for french audiences. Then the Japanese translation team tells you that "maxes first" doesn't make sense in their language, so you have to bypass and reword that. Now you have the korean translation squad letting you know that the sentence works but it sounds pretty bad so maybe if you have time reword it. Etc etc etc.

And that's one sentence. You'd want to add one for EACH change, meaning things are only going to get "worse".

Yet again, where where these complications before? You make unnecesary big mess out of one sentence yet before it used to be paragraphs (which is something I mentoin in my post). It was changed due to people not reading it not resources.

They have gone more in depth in the past, so I don't know what's keeping them from doing it.

The real, official answer is because tracking down stuff like this and/or writing up context this large takes up a huge amount of time and there are only a couple people writing patch notes, people who do not have anything to do with the actual changes themselves. Make of that what you will.

turns out nerfing ezreal's AP ratios makes his AP weaker, who'd a thunk it

Years ago riot has commented they watch other media for feedback too, but it's no secret they ignore their own forums, it's been in beta since the game went live.
