Champion Masteries

I feel like it's irritating that I can only get so much from it if I lose the match. Like, I did amazing on one game with Akali a few days ago. Well by the end of the game, our top lane tank had AFK'd, so we became that squishy team that had no front line and we got dominated to nexus. Now, when the game was over, I got an S ranking for my quadra kills, tower siege, etc etc. So I did a really good job and if not for that AFK, we probably would've won the game.

But I only ended up getting a small amount Mastery Points. Not even enough to get a 6th of the way to Rank II.

Am I the only one who gets upset about that and feels we should get more points, even if we lose? I mean, if I do bad, I understand. But I feel like I get more points from doing bad and WINNING a match as opposed to doing amazing and LOSING a match.

They want winning the game to remain top priority. If KDA or CS were the main source of these points, some people who only care about points would stop trying to win and just improve their score. Of course no one will lose intentionally, but they will stop risking their lives to safe turrets and just CS and/or kill all day.

If you play well with a champion, you will win more games eventually. Champion mastery is a long term process. Losing one game because of bad team will not matter. The luck will even out eventually.

Well yeah, I have a Rank V Shyvana, so I understand the system. I just feel that it's a little unbalanced. Like, I can get one kill mid as Leblanc and then just AFK the whole game, and if we win, I still get more points than if I was playing her the whole time and lost, but rocked in score. Meh, maybe I'm overthinking this.

It is unbalanced. You can feed intentionally and if your team somehow still wins, you'll get more than if you barely lost thanks to a 0/12 botlane compensating for your 8/0 during laning. However... Put yourself into Riot's place. Would you risk adding a feature that possibly deviates players' focus from winning games? It was probably a tough decision, but if wins weren't promoted as much, this feature would probably have been cancelled. It's the same reason why "achievements" is still not a thing although there used to be a tab reserved for it and many people asked for it.

weighting wins more than your personal performance is a necessary evil for this system to prevent unwanted side-effects. There is a way to argue that it is balanced the way it is (by saying over a long amount of games, etc.) but that's probably not the reason why they did it this way. It's because they had to.

We had a adc afk one game, I went 15/3 or something on rengar got an S-. We lost the game and I only got 44 points.... A different game I was feeding as some support but got 1200+ just for winning...

Exactly! That's what I mean. It's like, you try hard and lose, you get screwed. But you end up feeding one game, but your team carries you, you get like a million more points. T^T
