I think it is harder and riskier for Janna to go in and constantly try to get spelltheives stacks rather than sitting back and getting gold and hp from your adc's cs. I'm not sure what are your guys opinions?

*except on Morgana's W, which shouldn't proc ST more than once per cast.

aperson13 votesSpellthief's has better gold output provided you can proc it around a little under ~ 3 times every minute. Janna has a pretty poor auto range among ranged supports, but she can triple proc fairly quickly once in range with AA->W->AA or AA->W->Q so I like to take Spellthief's whenever I'm up against someone with similar range such as Morg or melee supports such as Braum. Against pokey backline supports such as Sona and Soraka or mages like Annie I prefer Coin because usually you'll take much more punishment trying to harass for gold than is worth it. In general I think it depends on how confident you are you can get close to the enemy botlane without taking too much harass.

Also, Janna is also bloodly fast, and she doesnt really use the coin active to the best of its ability.
NoMonku1 votesIts the risk/reward. If you want more gold, spellthiefs is the way to go. Also if you're against a melee support and/or know how to trade correctly, its worth it to take. If you're against an aggressive lane, though, coin may be better just because you won't have to risk yourself. I say just buy what you feel comfortable getting. Coin has a more useful active IMO then Spellthiefs anyway if you fully upgrade them, so just go for coin if you want to have a more passive playstyle.

Also gives you some "combat" stats with the AP, might not seem like much but it's made the difference before.
