Technically, any champ can go support.

Plus, I've had good success as Morde Support...

The potential for a champion to go support does not mean that Riots recommended items should say to go support items (especially when the rest of the recommended items are AP/Tank items).

Support Mordekaiser CAN (technically) work, but it is the single worst role to play him in.

He has NO cc, his only buff is a situational 75 movement speed (not 75%, just 75), his heal is only really useful if you are either jungling or stacking AP, and on top of that, he is gold reliant as hell; Morde doesn't even feel like a real champion until you get a Rylais.

The only reason people ever tried it out was because of a misconception that stemmed from his recommended items.

Ashe can support. Do you expect to log in one day and see riot recommend you build item 3092 first item? No, no you don't.

Relic Shield is not for support Mordekaiser. It's actually for "ADC Mordekaiser". When they did the Morde rework, they intended him to play bot lane with a support into marksman/support duo lanes. The idea is that Mordekaiser replaces the ADC, goes in with another melee support like an Alistar or a Leona or a Braum who also has Relic Shield, and combo the Relic Shields off each other.

Yes, but that went bust.

Now, people just take him mid/top/jungle, so his item sets should match.

Seriously, even Galio had his item sets updated to no longer recommend Athenes, and Morde has been in need of this relatively minor tweak for quite a bit longer.

Just swap out one shield for another.
