Champion balance and skill.

I've been a one trick pony Morgana since season 2.

Until recently I never bothered climbing higher than gold V. I wanted the season rewards and that's it.

Starting last season I began to try to climb the ladder. Last season I made plat in about 300 games. This season I made a new account and got plat as a Morgana OTP in about the same number of games. Partially because new accounts start in bronze, and that I changed roles mid climb from support to mid and had to level my mid rank.

For the sake of experiment I decided to try to climb as a new role and new champion. I decided to one trick Jax jungle on a new account. I've nearly made plat again and in 1/5th as many games played as Morgana.

Realistically speaking I am probably maxed out on Morgana mechanics. I know how to play the champion. I know all her match ups. I know her as a support. I know her as a mid. I'm very, very good at the champion.

I am a brain dead ape at jax and I stream roll most games as him because the champion is simply unbalanced. A champion that I'm bad at takes less than a quarter as many games to climb with as my OTP main.

I remember a game the other day where I was 1/1/4 as Jax in a plat/gold game. The enemy bot lane was had a 16/3 jinx. With only BR and trinity force I could beat a 3 item jinx with almost no effort. If I was morgana mid there would have been no possible way for me to have carried that game.

So what is the point of solo queue in this game? If it is literally 4x easier to climb as some champions and roles as other champions and roles then why should anyone even bother playing anything other than meta?

So I think we can make the following conclusions:

  1. Meta champions are insanely broken and several times over stronger for climbing
  2. Morgana is definitely not that great for solo climbing, but she's still a good champion.
  3. There are probably a lot of talented players who can't climb because they're not interested in grinding out 4x as many games as people who play meta champions.
  4. Riot games has absolutely no idea how to balance roles or champions

What's even worse is that Morgana is still a good champion. Can you imagine people who one trick champions that are even weaker? What about someone who loves Lulu? What if you're an absolutely amazing lulu player, is it fair that it will maybe take you 8x as many games to climb the ladder?

It would be nice if being good at something in this game was rewarded.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

I usually don't stray far away from my mains, although I am currently leveling a second account which im hoping to learn another role and a new champion roster in order to climb. I can't really say much about this topic, but I can still say that I think this is quite true, as there were certain games where I would just be sick of my main's for that day, and just first time some random champions that's meta and do really good despite not knowing what I'm really doing. An example, back when Galio was overbuffed for like two patches, I was on like a 4-5 loss streak in ranked and this game I was up against Vladimir, which is a matchup I struggle with. I was bored, knew it wasn't going to end well if I picked someone I play, so I just picked Galio and completely destroyed lane. I would miss like 80% of my Q's from range, but it didn't matter as I would just E in, w, q, auto and they would just be dead right there. I was so bad with farming with him I averaged around 4-5 cs a minute that game, but it didn't matter as by just playing someone who was just completely broken at the time one me the game doing high damage.

However, although it is easier to play meta champions and climb, I still feel as if you can still climb by one tricking, as once you reach a certain point and know all the mechanics, combos, and matchups with a champion you can climb just as easily. Meta champions just take a lot less effort to learn and play because they are just simply stronger.

I main Diana, or well, I used to. Diana hasn't been meta in at least 2 years. She's a very easy champion to play with a low pick rate, so you'd think she'd have peaks of a 52-53% winrate here and there like Annie and Malzahar. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Her win rate is almost always from 47-49% depending on the patch. She's a champion that is actually weak early game (pre-6), has a good mid-game only if you get there unscathed, and then falls off like a brick. I get that she's unhealthy because her combo can be unleashed very quickly without retaliation. But Riven and Jax can do the exact same thing and they're much harder to counter because they get to do it while being able to sustain better and become much tankier through items and runes.

Diana doesn't need a buff - at least not directly. In fact, many "weak" champions don't need buffs. A lot of meta and overpowered champions just need to be nerfed (especially in the damage department) so that the "weaker" champions can actually have a fair chance. But time and time again, Riot makes the same dumb mistake of handing out 3 buffs for every 1 nerf, so power creep keeps going up.

Its a combination my dude of the role and the champion. Maining junglers/Midlaners makes climbing significantly easier than maining any other role.

Toplane has almost zero impact on the game overall unless you stomp and i mean fucking STOMP your enemy. ADC's are bound to their supports the same way supports are bound to ADC's, you can be good but if you have someone who doesnt follow up thats that.

Junglers can affect the entire map and midlaners have a good amount of pressure between the fact that they are (A) In the middle of the map and (B) most midlaners have forms of CC, gap closing etc TwistedFate Galio Ahri AurelionSol Lissandra Sylas etc.

There is also the fact that some champions are insanely broken in comparison to others, I dare you to play Toplane as Darius and beating a Riven / Renekton / Fiora. You just cant, its not about skill or timing or positioning, its the fact that they are stronger and your not, simple as that.

There are people who play the game for fun because they love their champions/skins but it doesnt matter when your fated to lose if ANYONE picks anything meta

Actually there is one thing I would like to come back to...

When you say

I'm very, very good at the champion.

I can believe you, but there is something that you should take into account. When you think you are a beast at something, usually, you would think less about what the others can do-as you are sure about what you can do. Morgana didn't change that much over the last years gameplay-wise, while the LoL environment has changed quite a lot. And because you reached the "I can't be better at my champion" point, you sometimes aren't as critical over the rest of the game as you could or should be.

To illustrate this example : there is a study showing that trying to explain something in a different language than your native one (which is what I am doing ..), you are likely going to think about every step of the reasoning, which you woudn't do in your native language, because you already know what you want to do/say. Changing language makes you think about everything, basically it is a "calling into question" (not sure about the translation btw)

That might be what happend when you switched to Jax. You were more focused on learning than you were before, which is why you were more likely going to think about what the others can do, rather than what you can.

I hope I have been clear oO
