Gnar is a ranged toplaner....

The Bíg Ticket··26 votes·2,568 views

That has poke, sustain, burst, dps, percent max hp damage and an escape. That alone makes him a toplaner that is safe to blindpick into every matchup so why does he also need 5 (!!!) CCs in his kit? As a reminder..utility heavy supports/mages/junglers such as Nautilus, Nami or Lulu have 4 CCs only,...why does Gnar have the most CCs of any champ in this game when he already has so much utility, damage and tankiness without it?

So, to be frank:

His little form is pathetic in terms of control. It has DPS, max HP damage and an escape, yes. His big form is the control beast with a few stuns and burst. However, no max HP damage, the escape is made worse and he loses DPS.

Counting them both into the same account is never accurate, as he cannot swap at will. Mini form is meant to be slippery and a DPS while big form is meant to be the opposite. Also, I would track the amount of abilities that have control, not the amount of controls a champion has. So Little Q, Big Q, Big W and Big R, so 4 total.

Lugg2 votes

How is it not accurate? It's the same champion!

I understand your point, but it doesn't account that Gnar can go into ANY matchup and abuse the enemy champion's weaknesses in one or both of his forms. This is why he needs nerfing, you can't give a champion everything in his kit and expect them to be anywhere near balanced.

Gnar can go into ANY matchup and abuse the enemy champion's weaknesses in one or both of his forms.

The same can be said for his own weaknesses. Mini Gnar is squishy and lacks both burst and hard CC, and Mega Gnar is super-slow and lacks both reach and significant DPS. Sure, it feels really bad to be both poked and all-ined successfully by the same champion, but it's not like you were completely lacking in options in either case.

Lugg2 votes

Yes, you try to capitalize on his forms weaknesses, but that's stupidly hard to do. Mini Gnar, while squishy, has a great ranged slow and can hop away whenever he gets in trouble. Mega Gnar can simply walk away since you can never kill him unless you have 3 people.

Wicked Waffle4 votes

"Hop away whenever he gets in trouble" Taric THEY CAN'T SAY NO IF THEY'RE STUNNED

By your logic that it's stupidly hard to capitalize on Gnar form's weakness, that's on par of saying Katarina is broken in team fights because despite everybody on your team having a CC, you choose not to interrupt Katarina's ultimate.

Gnar falls off extremely late game, and is most strong in the mid game; also, saying that he can stunlock five teammates is not a valid point, because (in my experience) only Bronze/Silver players group up all together in one point, and next to a wall. That's equivalent of having everyone stand in the tiny river bush, get ulted by Amumu and Fiddle, and cry OP. If you make bad plays, you're going to pay for it.

Why does that happen quite often in pro play then? Sorry, but it happens at EVERY ELO.

Narasimha1 votes

...Wait, are you actually asking why pro players have coordination? Really?

Lugg1 votes

Oh yeah, no one other than pros are allowed to have coordination.

That has poke, sustain, burst, dps, percent max hp damage and an escape.

Thing is, he only has access to half of that at any one time. If he has poke, then he doesn't have burst. If he has sustain, he can't escape. If he has sustained damage, he himself can't take a hit. And if he's tanky, then everyone can run circles around him.

And please, try to blindpick him into a matchup. With all the Irelias, Pantheons, and Teemos in top lane, it'd be a joke.

nonsense, mega gnar can jump too... after he stuns you twice... oh wait, you are dead by then.

I say, Gut the fucker! Do it now.

Narasimha4 votes

It's a 475 range jump. That's shorter than most ADC's attack range, to put it in perspective.

And yes, Mega CAN stun multiple times. Hence why he's the threat that his mini form isn't.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

Rofl...yes cause Teemo and Pantheon are really popular picks. Also both of those are meant to be lanebullies and heavily fall off lategame cause they offer 0 utility to their team whereas Gnar bullies 90% of all toplaners and on top of that gives him team so much AoE cc that he can singlehandedly win a teamfight.

Also Irelia is good vs him yes but Gnar can dominate her earlygame and push her to the tower.

Actually Teemo does offer utility to its team in form of map control. Other than that though, I agree that he isn't that useful.

He can still poke with boulder toss, so he still has all of that in mega form, does more damage, and is near impossible to kill without about 3 people in mega form. god forbid you be near a wall.

Not gonna say Gnar is OP but I will say his kit is overloaded af.

Plus, he technically only has 1 CC in Mini-Gnar form which is only a slow, and 4 CC's in Mega Gnar form, one is a slow, other is an AOE-stun, the other is an AOE-knockback that doubles as a stun if it hits a wall. So, 1 CC in Mini-Gnar form, 3-4 in Mega Gnar form.

Plus a lot of Gnar's build BotRK and/or Randuin's so thats one or two more slows.

Slow on Q in both forms Stun on W in Mega Slow on E in both forms Knockback and stun/slow in Mega

Slow on Q Slow on E Stun on W Knockback on R Stun/Slow on R

= 5 ccs.

Wicked Waffle2 votes

Using that same logic, Vel Koz with Rylai's Crystal Scepter has 7 CCs, and thus more than Gnar. Slow on First Contact for Q Slow on Second (the splitting) of Q Slow on first W Slow on W detonation Slow on E Knockup on E Slow on Ult Universally, slows are soft CC, and others are hard CC. It's not wise to group them together.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

Are you retarded? You really gonna use a perma cc item for your argument?

Gnar has 5 CCs...I don't know why it is so hard to admit that. His Q slows you when he hits you with it, his W slows you when he jumps on you, his E stuns you, his R knocks you back and THEN either stuns or slows you. Those are 3 hard and 2 soft CCs. No other champ in the game has that.

Wicked Waffle1 votes

I'm just playing by your standards. You're grouping soft CC with hard CC; as such, any champions carrying a simple items such as Rylai's Crystal Scepter or Frozen Mallet, by your definition, have CC. I'll admit that, by your standards, Gnar has 5 CCs. Also, playing by your standard without items, Naut also has 5 CCs. CC on his hook. CC on his basic. Slow on his Riptide. Knock Up on his Ult (Main Target) Knock Asides on his Ult (Targets in Path of Main Target) Also, it's not nice calling people retarded.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

CC is CC and I don't know why you would bring in a CC item when talking about CC in champion's kits.

Naut's ult knocks up...Gnar's ult knocks back and then stuns or slows you.

Wicked Waffle1 votes

It's a demonstration/example.

Naut's ult and Gnar's ult are both quite similar. Both have one static CC that will always occur, while both have situational CC. Naut: Static: Knockup to primary target. Situational: Knock aside for secondary targets in the way. Gnar: Static: Knockback. Situational: Stun or slow, based on the presence of a wall.

Because he wants to peacefully sustain himself and farm in lane so he can become late game teamfight god :p

And that is why I hate vlad. Come late game he's near impossible to kill and he practically can murder any squishy without retaliation.

"cc" isn't a valid thing to count. It implies old Gangplanks 7% slow was as effective as malphites ult because they're both "ccs"

Well he has 2 stuns and a knockback.

Gnar can stunlock someone for 3 seconds Nautilus can stun/knockup for a combined 2 seconds and root for 1.5 seconds

Gnar can slow for 35% Nautilus can slow for 50% Gnar has to pickup every boulder for it to be aproximately as good as nautilus

Nautiuls can ult any time but almost all of Gnar's cc requires him to be mega gnar which can be played around.

Gnar is still cancer though.

The Bíg Ticket2 votes

Gnar's W slows for 60%.

Nautilus can stun/root a single person for 3.5 seconds. Gnar can stun your entire team for 3 seconds. Which do you pick?

Wicked Waffle1 votes

Gnar's W, in no way, slows for 60%. That's his Q. Do your homework.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

Why do you talk about stuff without informing yourself? Doesn't it feel bad to spread false claims while also trying to talk down someone?

His W slows for 60% when he jumps on you. Read it up. His Q slows for 35%.

His W isn't his jump. His E is.

Also, his CC at least takes skill to land. Don't play super immobile top laners and don't be retarded.

this "trash" can actually beat a Gnar in lane, thank you. Yorick

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

Rofl...no I just think Bronze players don't need to teach me about the game.

Wicked Waffle2 votes

Someone apparently didn't do his homework. Gnar's Q is Boomerang Toss and Boulder Toss. Both slow scales up based on rank. Gnar's W is Hyper and Wallop. One gives him movement speed, and the other stuns. Gnar's E is Hop and Crunch. One makes him bounce and gives him attack speed, and the other slows. So unless you play LoL with keybindings that aren't the default, you are the misinformed one. Based on this, I can tell that you have never once played Gnar in your life. If the previous is true, play Gnar first, find the things you are weak too, and apply them the next time you play against Gnar.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

He still has a 60% slow aswell as a 35% slow. Just because I mistyped doesn't mean its not true. And yes you spread false claims.

Wicked Waffle1 votes

What false claims? I'm just stating facts. W, in no way, slows for 60%. His E, which I thought you mistaked for Q, does in fact slows for 60%.

I find that 9/10 I get kills as Gnar because the enemy laner ignored the whole "Gnar is pissed 99% w/ e up and lvl 6" Its way too funny when you just jump over a minion into rage and slam that assbag teemo into a wall.
