Games are not getting shorter, they're just progressing more quickly

"But isn't that the exact same thing?"

No, and i'll explain the difference.

TL;DR at the bottom, but I implore you to at least skim this.

If games were simply ending earlier, you'd mostly be seeing early game champions and scaling champions like Vayne , Tristana , or KogMaw would be virtually non-existant. What is currently happening is these champions are hitting their powerspikes much earlier than they used to and theres a couple reasons for that.

The first and most obvious reason would items and item cost reductions, some examples would be item 3031 and item 3508 getting their costs reduced by 200g, and item 3086 getting it's cost reduced by 100g, all in patch 7.9 This means carries hit the item 3006 item 3086 item 3031 spike sooner by 300g or item 3006 item 3087 item 3031 sooner by 200g And for champions that build reaver, their 3 item core of item 3508 item 3087 item 3031 spike comes 400g earlier. (factor in magical footwear and it's even more)

Carries are the primary source of dps to objectives in most games, and the sooner they come online the faster the game progresses if they have access to those objectives.

Now, those are just the ADCs, but let's look at other sources of gold that help them get items and how those have accelerated the game:

The elephant in the room here is definitely turret first blood, adding a massive 300g(formerly 400g) dump into those nearby when the tower falls This was introduced into the game in patch 6.15 as a response to the boring as fuck 4v0 tower pushes we were seeing nearly every competetive game a while back making the first 10 minutes or so awfully boring to watch. That's 300g more gold in the game that wasn't there before, and what good teams typically do is they all walk away from the tower so the ADC can soak up all the local gold, netting them about 550(?) gold. But that's not all, Riot ALSO made bot tower squishier than any other tower because it lacks fortification pre-5 minutes, to force teams to play 2v2 bot in competitive instead of lane swapping.

The result? Frequent 4-5 ganks bot lane very early into the game to smash that first tower after possibly getting a double kill because it goes down like nothing. But wait, there's more. Riot ALSO reworked herald to be a nearly guaranteed tower for any team that uses it semi-competently unless severely far behind, BUT WAIT, THERES MORE, in their infinite wisdom, Riot also added the demolish rune to the game, so every tank can do their own rift herald cosplay like they always dreamed of.

All this combined means towers are dying MUCH faster and way earlier than they ever used to on average compared to past seasons. Cheaper items means you get them sooner. First tower gives more snowballing gold to pay for those items. More tools to murder towers means even more gold is being earned sooner and leads to a faster game pace.

item 2422 is also saving anyone who takes them 350g

Also a minor note, but definitely worth mentioning, the removal of (purchaseable) green wards, as well as the addition of item 2031 means you're saving a LOT of gold over the course of the game, refillable in particular as this pays for itself after the first back and only costs 3 pots worth of gold which saves you a couple hundred gold you would've spent on potions in past seasons when you also factor in you're going to be selling it back later for 60g, meaning you only ever invested 90 net gold into it.

There's also the fact that runes reforged added a lot more damage into the game overall but that's a complete seperate can of worms for someone else to open up and digest properly.

Honestly just removing first blood tower gold would go a long way on its own, it won't fix league completely but it'd make snowballing not so unstoppable. ######The lack of fortification on bot tower would still force 2v2 botlane pre-5 anyways so i don't see why Riot even needed to add both of them. TL;DR, ADC item cost reductions + first tower gold + towers being made weaker/more tower destroying options makes the game progress much faster, making carries scale faster

I probably missed something but Thanks for reading [sg-jinx]

Your title is worded wrong. Games are getting shorter. It should say games are getting shorter BECAUSE they are progressing quicker, not that they aren't shorter at all. The game progressing quicker doesn't somehow mean games aren't shorter. You can't tell me a 15 minute game isn't shorter than a 20 minute game.

Riot has repeatedly said that game times have only decreased, on average, by 2-3 minutes. Individual experience soften vary just because of rank tier (in my experience, bronze games went way faster than gold games do).

Generally speaking the higher up the ladder you go the faster the games are

probably should've put the "just" before "getting" instead of where it currently is

Recently games have been a lot faster for sure, the past few months I've encountered a lot of bottom lanes that are just bad and continue to feed. Bottom lane is always the deciding factor of the game in my opinion. Another thing I've noticed is that teams get extremely toxic and break down early. With the GG and WP before the game has even actually got started. People are just blaming mistakes on each other and overall just ending the game for their team.

All of the reason you explained are in depth and I'm surprised that you have found those, that explains a lot about Yasuo and other crit champions getting a debuff and attack speed champions in my opinion are starting to gain a lot more strength.

Salron7 votes

I think a major factor in that is autofill just forces a lot of inexperienced supports into bot, and we've always had that, but in the old system before role select you'd typically be forced to play support much more often which means people have much less offrole experience in general.

Also the current meta is extremely volatile and encourages gangbanging bot 4v2 much more than before, once you're behind bot it's just a much more painful experience overall

Thefrostyviking3 votes

You forgot to mention the static buffs x)

Those are pretty much the key reason botlane snowballs so hard, if everyone went hurricane and phantom then Ashe/kog/twitch and maybe trist would be the top marksmen.

But instead static is a thing, and it gives a huge amount of burst damage right after getting it along with a IE, which if you are ahead results in a dumpstered enemy botlane.....and then pretty much anything else that isn't a full on tank.

Unless the fed marksman is Vayne....heavens have mercy on the souls of those who have to deal with that.

I totally agree with this. Although I think one thing you didn't mention was how much value assassins and poke champions are getting from the new rune system.

This is not a counterpoint just additional point that I'm adding on to yours. Either way the game progresses quickly. Either the auto attacking ADC get's their items and starts winning team fights, or assassins and poke champs get even better power spikes. So whatever your team or champion was built to do, they are able to do it sooner.

Recommendations to Riot:

  1. Remove the demolition rune. If you want to make tanks better, don't give them damage to champions or towers. Give them tankiness. Make them become meat shields with low damage and high cc. If this makes their laning too tough with low damage, maybe input a rune where standing by your tower gives it bonus armor. So yeah they won't be able to win lane, but they will lose it more slowly, and they won't die as easily. Tradeoff is they also can't kill anything, which I know a lot of people are/were getting pissed about getting clapped by tanks.

  2. Rework Herald or trade it in for something else. The removal of fortification on bot tower was nice to secure the 2v2, but has resulted in being boring in that basically every game is a bot lane clown fiesta due to the fact that both Drake and the squishiest tower on the map on there. I mean Riot SAYS they want dynamic games, but does putting the two easiest objectives (not including Red/Blue buffs) on the same half of the map promote dynamic play? I think not. Right now it's like either gang bang bot, or pick up a slight kill or push advantage in solo lanes THEN gangbang bot. And let's not forget that oftentimes the play that results in bot lane being taken quite often also results in Drake being taken. --Riot if you are listening...put something on top half that makes that side as desirable to target early on as bot is. This will make top lane less boring in terms of multi man interaction, and can provide a trade option. Herald takes too long to kill and doesn't provide enough guaranteed benefit to be defined as a good trade for the bot tower into Drake play. (I'm not saying it needs to be an equal trade or even close to that. But something that can at least theoretically keep you in the game if your bot lane gets clapped.

HungryJack6192 votes

Honestly? What if they just rotated drake to the top river and put herald/baron bot? I know it will infuriate people by virtue of it being different and "wrong", but still...

But wait there's more! I believe the same patch, or close to crit item reduction, Riot increased all AD items by 10! Or the ones Marksmen buy. But wait there's more! GA was turned into an AD item that benefited Marksmen the most. Other AD classes can pick it up but it mostly benefits Marksmen due to them being the center of attention. BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! Even though it happened a while ago, Mercurial Scimitar builds from QSS which also gives more AD which also was one of the items that got it's AD buffed. So even if you land a great successful game changing CC on the Marksmen, or you were a diver to dive in and CC the Marksmen, they can just cleanse, and walk away. There is no winning in the item department with Marksmen, they just win across all the board. Damage, reliability, Support protection, and items.

Don't forget that they also severely nerfed most tank items in tank update. They used to give more stats overall and were cheaper, pretty sure sunfire was 2500~2700 gold or something, and now it's 2900. Combine that with the fact that offensive items are cheaper than in the past seasons, and buying defensively just feels like shit, especially since offence most notably dps hard outscales any defense.

Bjørnetjenesten5 votes

Severely nerfed? Tanks are fine, tank items ar FINE. We dont need another braindead tank meta where chogath, sej and zac can facetank tower for 5 minutes.

What riot needs to fix is tower hp/armor, fb tower gold, and nerf all the damage runes that scales with kills (promotes snowballing).

Naramiel3 votes

I think the post is also a (useful) response to the argument that, if you look at the average game length, it's only come down slightly. The OP is trying to explain why nevertheless people justifiably feel like games have gotten much much faster.

GGLineaR2 votes

Given that it's ONLY carries being given so much gold and item cost reductions, it's hard for me to agree with you when you say the "game" is progressing faster.

The carries are just getting stronger faster, but this is a team game, or at least it's supposed to be.

If mages and tanks got some cost reductions on their core items too, I wouldn't mind these games not lasting so long, because then it wouldn't ONLY be botlane that matters.

HungryJack6191 votes

Everyone else progresses faster as well, but only by extension from assisting the adc and getting objectives sooner.

If that were true, people wouldn't be bitching about hypercarries right now.

What I mean is that every role progresses faster than they did before, adcs just do so at a higher rate, hence the complaints about hypercarries.

Games aren't getting shorter, the Nexus is just exploding sooner.

This is easily in the top ten of the worst thread concepts on the Boards, ever.

They worded the whole post plenty well, it's just their title that is misleading.

Read the post, disagreed, summed it up.

It's a Boards post, let's not take it too seriously here folks.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

You gave one sentence that stood contrary to the title. You gave no actual reasoning addressing the content of the post, and then you insulted the OP by calling their thread concept one of the top ten worst in the boards' history. You really gave us nothing to go on to think that you actually read the post.

Not only did you contribute nothing of value to the thread but you dismissed the post with a one-dimensional sentence and you insulted the OP in your only other one.

So I think I'll follow your suggestion to not take this seriously. Your thoughtless insult isn't worth taking seriously.

Scary Door1 votes

{quoted}

Not only did you contribute nothing of value to the thread but you dismissed the post with a one-dimensional sentence and you insulted the OP in your only other one.

Typically, ridiculous notions don't require long responses.

For instance, "Yasuo is OP". The only response required is, "learn to play against him" or "get good".

In this instance:

All this combined means towers are dying MUCH faster and way earlier than they ever used to on average compared to past seasons. Cheaper items means you get them sooner. First tower gives more snowballing gold to pay for those items. More tools to murder towers means even more gold is being earned sooner and leads to a faster game pace.

Games are shorter for these reasons. If the pacing is faster, because of the reasons listed, then the games will be shorter, and they are. Everything has been accelerated.

Therefore, my original response was all that was required.

"But isn't that the exact same thing?"

No, and i'll explain the difference.

They are the same thing, because the reasons don't really matter in this context... it's the result: Faster games, more snowbally games.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

You seem to have a solid grasp of english. Why aren't you noticing that the post has a direction and purpose?

Honestly just removing first blood tower gold would go a long way on its own, it won't fix league completely but it'd make snowballing not so unstoppable.

The person is trying to identify why games snowball so much so that this problem can be fixed.

I'm still trying to find all of these people who are averaging 45 minute games to offset the average duration of the games I've seen.

FilDaFunk1 votes

You're saying "length of game shorter" and "speed of game faster" are different things.

DuskDaUmbreon1 votes

Implications of them are vastly different.

Saying games are shorter implies that early-game stompers are the meta, because games just don't end up lasting that long. Such is often the case if you reduce defensive stats across the board (especially if you reduce objective defenses).

Faster games, however, means that the game's time was, instead of being cut shorter, was divided and sped up. Instead of a, for example, 10 minute Zeal+IE, an ADC might look at an 8 or 7 minute Zeal+IE. Whereas in a shorter game, they'd still be getting it at 10 minutes (or later, since Zeal+IE is only a mid-speed build, as opposed to just going straight Lethality, meaning they'll probably get their teeth stomped in if they try to build that way).

Sure, they technically mean the same thing, but their implications are different.

Daddy Ants1 votes

No ADC takes Magical Footwear.

Celerity and Gathering Storm are just too good to not take. Sudden Impact and Ravenous hunter are also too good to pass up.

DuskDaUmbreon2 votes

Sudden impact is going to be useless on most ADCs, and Ravenous Hunter has dubious value to most of them as well (as it only heals on ability damage, not on autos).

Celerity is valuable, true, but Gathering Storm is...iffy. Shorter game timers mean it gives less value unless you're someone who intentionally stalls it out (meaning you probably already have more value in your late-game than they do anyways).

Some ADCs run with Footwear. Ashe likely would, if she's taking approach velocity (since she needs that extra bit of movement speed, given how painfully slow and immobile she is.)

Snaketits1 votes

That argument doesn't really work, otherwise someone like Cass would actually be viable in this meta. She's still relying on making it into lategame which is a phase of the game that simply doesn't exist anymore.

Raiyza1 votes

No, they're still the same. Those are the reasons WHY games are shorter. They end far quicker because big events like first tower happen much faster than they used to.

Ahri Baka1 votes

Adc are not the only problem dude ... assassins are more annoying they hit their power spike when they have this item 3134 only and they are ready to go when they have item 3147 as soon as they get item 3147 item 3142 item 3111 , they are fed Zed can go roam bot with item 3134 only and double kill , got the first tower , and 80% won the match that's how it's going on , and if you are playing a mage that isn't Malzahar forget about killing Zed Talon or any ad assassin and it ends mages and top laners can't do much

Bronze GOAT1 votes

It's like your post is trying to blame ADC's as the main problem, which is typical of these boards when ADC's, fed or not, are nowhere near the main factor in which team is stomping at the 20 minute mark, they're just the one's breaking your Nexus after that giving you that impression. When the one's really snowballing every game are the junglers and mid lane assassins.

When in a team fight ADC's shine, which gives the impression that they're the reason the game is ending so fast when in actuality, the Khazix JarvanIV JG got a huge lead, or the Zed Katarina got fed, or the Leona got her ADC fed. Even though Vayne Twitch need nerfs, even when they're fed early, it's just a by-product of some other champ who's too good early getting them that lead. ADC's are not remotely the reason why games are decided at the 10-15 minute mark, so stop making such misinformative posts.

sobi9991 votes

Here is my speculation on this. Before the introduction of all the different ways of obtaining gold, as highlighted by OP, players spiked or reached to a specific build later than is the case now. So we all can agree that that late game hits sooner now than it did before. So when people think of shorter games, they only tend to look at the length (time) of the game and to some extent this is true as some games can last 40+minutes whilst others last no longer than 20mins , but in reality, it is how they perceive the game. In other words, players have the perception that they'll reach a specific powerspike at a specific point in the game but now that time occurs much earlier than before so they are performing better than they or the enemy thought at a specific point and time in the game. Hence why, a vayne can get quadra's 25 minutes into the game which would have been a myth before. Nonetheless, other factors also contribute to why adc's are bursting more than assassins but lets not go that deep for now.

I also believe that before the average length of game or range of game length (biggest game time - lowest game time) was lower. That means that games usually always lasted 30+ minutes but as it is the case now, games can be either be too short or too long. Which is why i think statistics show that games are shorter only by a small margin than they were before. It was well pointed out by OP that late game champs would be out of meta if games ended faster but because they reach their spikes so early on, that it has become adc meta (who have the most cost efficient build). Assassins are also strong right now especially item 3147 and that's also because armor scales with level and assassins are getting lethality much earlier on but its still miles better than lethality in season 6.

Rexxiee1 votes

They also increased the ambient gold by quite a bit, which means everyone is getting their builds faster.
