Ryze and the Beginner Champion Pool

Now that Ryze has been updated with his new passive stacks granting a mana shield that also grants cdr while it's up, has Ryze become too complicated for new players to grasp easily? I know there's not many candidates for teaching new players about mid range tanky mages, but having a lot of a champion's kit stored in a kind of esoteric passive puts a bit of burden on new players (also Kha for teaching about assassians makes me raise an eyebrow too).

That being said I don't know who I would pick to replace Ryze; my best bet would be on Viktor because his kit itself is simplistic, but the problem with that is his skills are pretty hard to cast, the laser in particular (he also has the hex core item which may throw players off).

Anybody have input or champion suggestions if Riot were to address this?

As far as a champion that can replace Ryze in terms of beginner tanky mage champs, I think Annie already fits the bill. Ryze is still fairly easy to pick up, but he has become a little more difficult to play with his Q becoming a skill shot and managing his passive appropriately. He is still best when in the opponents face and that I appreciate Riot preserving. I do think that new players can pick him up and have moderate success on him, but it will take a lot more time to master Ryze than Annie if you are a new player.
