I understand why there isn't one now, since there is absolutely no decent itemization for one, and the only stats that come paired with AD are AS, LS, Arpen, and crit, but is there any real reason why the concept has never been explored?

MPendragon1 votesI don't necessarily disagree, but I wouldn't play GP as a Support unless I was trolling. That's just the truth. I'd personally rather pick J4 or Cho'Gath as a support over GP, that's just my personal opinion.
BastionKross1 votesJust give it a chance for a moment. has one of the, if not the, strongest level 1-2 in the game. (Dat passive) If you find a marksman player willing to tweak their runes and masteries specifically for an all-in on level 1, you can dominate the lane early and have a good chance to keep it that way. Of course, there's always the chance you fail at the all-in and are behind from that point on without jungler assistance, but high rewards should have high risks.
And don't get me started on the pirate's E + 
combo, the free stats are real. Imagine a but with more offensive minded auras. They can transform a limp wristed ADC into an auto attacking god at the push of a button, while also letting his GP support take full value from the aura as well since he's AD too.
All in all, it's definitely not the strongest support, and you almost have to duo to take full advantage of the strengths. But it certainly can be effective and fun as hell. And when you're a support, having fun is something that comes too rarely.
Leaf of the lake1 votesAnyone can build AD. It's just a matter of whether or not they're good with it. Ever tried playing AD nami in a solo lane? It works, because almost any ranged champion can build AD and do damage safely with it. It's just not always optimal.
