Why pick a mage when you just can pick Irelia mid ?
She is 3 times more tanky than any midlaner and deals the same or even more damage, but only constant not burst.

Because she is melee and is played in a role which more often than not is relied upon to be the big source of ap damage. Also barely any elos have irelia mid above a 47% win rate and if your gonna complain about her it's not damage that is the major factor at play here to why you could call her strong when you could count on one hand the number of midlane champions that average less damage in a game than irelia.
Literally you would only pick a mage mid if you have no magic damage, otherwise you're just inting.
Cuz the jg can just pick poppy and laugh at how easy it is to get kills and watch her be 0/15 by 25 minutes
Can't mid anymore. W dmg reduction vs. Physical dmg only.
or 
Irelia W only reduces Physical damage now, not Magic.
Any Mage should be able to ruin her.
