Mages > Assassins

There's no point playing assassins; Mages are way better.

Mages deal AOE damage from a safe distance and late game they can burst down enemies too. In many cases their mechanical skill floor is much lower and their damage is much more reliable. They can also Gank lanes.

Assassins struggle to create 1 vs 1s later in team fights and rarely is a team disciplined/organized enough to close out a game even if they were ahead in the beginning.

Mages like Ahri Vladimir Viktor Veigar are all way more useful from mid game to late game then an assassin.

Not to mention, assassins need to get up to your face to kill you and they are all squishy. That is just poor design; you should either be tanky and deal damage up close or squishy and deal tons of it from a distance (like mages). One silence and you are dead. Add GAs late game and you can't assassinate anyone whereas a proper Mage could have dealt sustained damage from a distance.

Plus Riot just gutted most of the assassins' burst combos.

Except mages have nowhere near the mobility assassins have...

Astôlfo5 votes

Nor do they need it when they can AoE burst groups? While building semi-tanky? And having some of the best defensive items in the game?

MunchCrunchLunch16 votes

why the fuck do you need mobility when you can nuke someone from 600-1000 range away?

Chembaron Yamada11 votes

Kled because if you are not mobile af, I'm coming for you and you are gonna have a bad time. Seriously, there are many champs able to close the gap extremely fast and if they are in your face, most mages struggle really hard against them.

Since when do people underestimate the value of mobility in this game? It is an extremely powerful mechanic, look at Infinite-Dashes-Nidalee (she is an assassin btw and was one of the strongest champs in worlds, seems many people forget that).

hard CC? team peel? Zhonyas?

Infinite-Dashes-Nidalee (she is an assassin btw and was one of the strongest champs in worlds, seems many people forget that).

she is one of the strongest junglers because of her sustain and map pressure, not because she is an assassin.

Chembaron Yamada3 votes

I did never say that she is one of the strongest junglers because she is an assassin. But since all people act like assassins are totally useless and all that stuff: that is just not true. One of the strongest picks in worlds was actually an assassin. So being an assassin can't be that bad actually (not per se).

Oakleaf Ranger2 votes

Why bring up her being an assassin if the assassin aspect isn't the important part (which part of it is). She was strong because of her ability to clearly quickly While being healthy in the jungle than almost everyone else. Her "assassination" relies on landing a long ranged skill shot. She doesn't have to place her self in risky situations most of the time in order to be threat. While also having tools keep away from enemies/escape if targeted by an opponent.

^^^^ Reason why she was even picked during worlds was because of her mobility and how fast she can go from one side of the map to the other, Nidalee pick was usually a pick if lee sin was ban out because Lee sin is more useful then nid with his ult but they both usually have the same mobility to cover the map. Lee and Nid can invade and get out fast even if she is spotted out she can still get out like lee sin with out taking penalty like other jungler who gets caught when invading..

Chembaron Yamada1 votes
  1. If I remember correctly, Nidalee's pick/ban-rate was higher than Lee Sin's (correct me if I'm wrong). This wouldn't be the case if "Lee Sin is more useful than Nidalee". She actually was a must.

  2. You pointed out exactly what I meant: She was strong because of mobility. Because she is fast enough to be a threat all over the map and able to escape if she gets caught out. But in the comments before, if seemed people assume mobility means nothing.

Most mages are more flexible when it comes to team compositions. They have the potential to function in any lane, while assassins are generally relegated to either mid or the jungle.

Lol @ Veigar

https://plays.tv/video/582625293e3da11b1a/kat-does-no-damage-part-3

litterally E hextech and he is outa there.

Assassin kill HPT's way more effectively then a mage could Assassins are not as fact as a mage but they remove carry threat way more effectively. it just takes more effort.

Edit: also @ gutted combo? https://plays.tv/video/582624bcefda6b8bd0/katarina-does-no-damage

they just extended it is some cases from QEWR to EWQ aa E E R

Ahristocats5 votes

if you look slowly, at the damage you dealt, you did 300+200 damage in the fraction of second veigar died lol okay, do you think it's good? "just extended it to some cases" all i see with your video is katarina taking like 10 seconds to kill a target, not having the combo extended. every assassin that aren't rengar (and maybe kha'zix) are just garbage at assassinating now. not only they got delay, but their burst was just olafed on some champ like talon(a little not olafed if you manage to get the crit) akali, shaco.

meanwhile Zed got a hard fucking nerf, unless he kills a 300 ad+ target, when he was the most perfect assassin

Takazaki4 votes

unfortunatnly i only have videos of katarina and rengar and kha ive experianced shacos walking bopping anyone who walk their way. and LB still riding the good ol laning and mid game she has always done.

garbage assassin? nah garbage plays from players who havent gotten use to the mechanics yet

Edit: and considering his level 500 damage is about halve his HP from just E and an item alone. " 500 is small" but when the health pool is 1.2k yeah no

TeCoolMage1 votes

500 damage with literally 15 AP from items only. That's top tier damage lol

Then she gets a reset on her E to use on minons if the enemy jungler tries to follow up

Ahristocats1 votes

500 damage from 15 ap? she had void staff+luden+hextech. it was pathetic and veigar died because cho helped kat to kill him.

if cho wasn't here, kat couldn't burst veigar in 1 second.

TeCoolMage1 votes

I mean the second one

It was around 400-550 damage including autos

Xonra3 votes

Fighting Zed is hilarious now. I keep facing off with him as Rumble (apparently he is fotm as top like Yasuo was/is). Everytime he tries to all in me he never kills me and some how I can kill him first or at worst we trade because of his ult.

Before as Rumble I was like "crap zed, I'm dead". Now I'm like "Oh it's Zed, well I can probably out play this or trade at worst".

HazyCloud77 votes

I think a bigger issue is that many marksmen are better assassins than actual assassins. Vayne, Twitch, and Quinn to name a few. Actually, many champions in every class are better assassins than actual assassins.

Xonra2 votes

Syndra is currently a better assassin.

Vayne and Quinn already mentioned

Plenty of junglers are borderline

I think overall the assassin rework thing was neat, but it feels like they shifted power to "remove" power, instead of quality of life changes. Burst was lowered for mobility and utility in a lot of cases.

Clint Orris6 votes

The biggest difference between a mage and an assassin is mobility. Assassin's are great at roaming, split pushing, and getting to the backline.

Astôlfo2 votes

Viktor with Rylai's says hi. While he's running around perma-speedboosted while simultaneously perma-slowing his target(s).

And if you still think new assassins are even slightly good with the exception of Kha'zix, and possibly Rengar, then you are drunk.

TeCoolMage2 votes

rylai's needs fixing, viktor, annie and syndra form the unholy trinity of unneeded burst as exceptions to the rule, and the rest of the assassins still burst faster than every other mage except maybe ahri.

Are you saying Ahri bursts faster than assassins? Cause that isn't necessarily true. She has a pretty strong mid game, but her early and late are pretty mediocre.

When you look at it, Ahri was always one of those "assassins" with pretty delayed damage. She wouldn't kill you unless she landed charm -- or was so far ahead, 1 double Q proc and w was enough.

TeCoolMage1 votes

yeah, hence the 'maybe' lol

Very Hard Engage6 votes

implying you'll ever hit more than 1 person with your abilities...

or worse.... miss

and when you do you still find yourself doing the same amount of damage as an adc.

you'll quickly realize that on average the adc has significantly more damage dealt to champs than anyone else in the room.

the difference between assassins and mages is that assassins rack up way more kills and predominately have targeted abilities.

the difference between mages and adcs is they offer utility and damage diversity giving up on raw output and objective taking/clearing.

"We lowered assassins burst damage in order to give thrm more counterplay"

Meanwhile insert any reworked mages

Felvyne5 votes

If the enemies are smart, good luck reaching their backline as Veigar.

Honestly, while I understand the complain about mages bursting a lot more, they don't have the mobility of an assassin that let them pick the target they want more often than less (except Ahri, but she is an hibrid of mage an assassin)

AttackOnTeemos4 votes

Sin's if you wanna kill things on your own, Mages if you wanna at least let your team in on the glory from time to time.

Astôlfo2 votes

Now, it's more like playing assassins if you want to throw a game.

Assassins don't have that bad of ganks. Especially talon. Additionally, not all mages are easy. Some are like Veigar, not too hard, and some are like Azir, quite complex. Some Assassins are easy-ish, such as old Kat and all forms of Talon, and others are quite hard such as new Katarina. You can't generalize entire classes like that.

Also, Mages have way less mobility. Assassins trade range for mobility.

WorksAtAGayBar1 votes

Yea I've noticed I've been doing really well as Ahri when against the reworked assassins. Talon is super easy to predict and since they delayed LBs burst I can just Q and run away until the mark has run out.

Lovelle1 votes

That's what I've been saying for years. The only time assassins are good are when their numbers are overtuned.

Mages can take advantage of defensive itemization/scaling being weak just as much as assassins can, except they do it from range (while also having a wealth of utility).

DoktorKaiser1 votes

Oh sorry I didnt notice the Ahri or Viktor 1 shot without any counterplay... oh wait THEY HAVE FUCKING SKILLSHOTS, you know something that YOU CAN DODGE, something that most assassins dont have? They only trully bullshit mages in this sence are Veigar , Annie and Syndra since they have point and click 100000 dmg ulti but again THEY ARE NOT MOBILE AT ALL!! If you are stupid enough to stand in a range of a fed mage so that you actually get 1 shot, its not RIOT's fucking fault, its yours. Assassin rework is great since now I dont have a situation where I blinked and suddenly saw a gray screen, now I need to get isolated/outplayed to actually die and the burst is higher than before , its just not 1 second bullshit burst.

INoble KnightI1 votes

To be fair Annie's ult is a skillshot.

Canastus1 votes

You probably haven't seen any of the current assassins snowball out of control. Trust me, once they're ahead it's almost impossible to catch up with their idiotic amount of mobility which enables them to disengage anytime.

Assassins are by far the most antifun role to deal with since they can delete you before even being able to properly react. Riot claims they got rid of this kind of gameplay, I call bs. They're still doing their job, to all of our dismay.
