Ranked requires owning at least 16 champions

So why are "one trick ponies" allowed?

(You too mister/misses throws a temper tantrum when your intended pick is banned.)

Edit: Since it isn't clear to some. What good is it to own a champion that you have never played?

Why are all the people pointing out that it's necessary to definitely come out with enough champions throughout picks and bans getting downvoted?

Do we just not like math?

I mean, bans shouldn't allow anyone in a game to use a champion, not even the banning team IMO.

Mirror matches aren't really all that fun, and they also create some wonky stuff, plus allowing them means limiting the strategy in pick/ban phase.

Ranked requires 16 champions to make sure that you actually have a champion all the time.

If you had 15 champs, 6 could be banned and the other 9 could be taken, with you being the very last pick.

This is actually a good argument. I think we should lower the limit.

u need 16 champions because if u dont have 16, all the champions u own could be taken/banned and then u would have no champion to play.

6 bans + 9 other players picking their champion if u r last pick and that adds up to 15. So, you need at least 16 champions to prevent this.

i don't play 70% of the champions i own and i doubt you play every single champion you own either

Would you rather be really good at one champion or mediocre at 16?

You can trade that champion to someone else so that you can hide the information of who you intend to play until later in the draft (preventing counterpicking). If that champion is a popular ban, having it can ensure that it's available for the enemy to ban, and it will likely draw a ban that was either already expected (no loss to you) or that wouldn't have otherwise happened (-1 potentially useful ban for enemy @ no cost to me? yes please!). The question of why are 1-tricks allowed is effectively answered by asking: why should they not be allowed? To which, you will find that there are no great affirmative answers (I mean, it might not be good for their MMR if they 1-trick because some opponent may target ban their champ, but that is practically speaking rare outside of very high elo).

I'm not saying never play other champs, but finding a main and investing in it is what makes this game fun for alot of players

lol, im sure people play other champs in normals. Ranked is where you're supposed to try to win. Focusing on a smaller pool of champs will have more success than a larger pool more often than not.
