Why don't people understand morale?

MarkedOfKane··248 votes·9,662 views

I hold absolutely no respect for anybody who would say the following.

"I should have went (your role here)" Upon you dying once or twice

"Nice gank/Best gank" Upon you not pulling off a gank

"(Anything about them losing lane because of something very small that you did)

"(Complaining to the enemy team about someone who lost lane)"

Any demoralizing comments. Do people not want to win their games? I have to be honest, it is so easy to throw somebody on tilt just by saying one small thing. Hearing any comment like that makes me feel like shit. It really does. I realize my mistakes, I do not need to hear you hold them against me and mock me all game. Even when you make one small mistake, there is that guy who is not going to trust or side with you on anything.

Morale plays a huge role in this game. Toxicity poisons your team, weakening them.

By all means, give constructive criticism. Its not what you say, its how you say it.

I had a game 2 days ago where I did actually receive one of these comments.

I had called mid, I was second round of picks, but first pick decided on going mid. I was like fine, went support instead. Our botlane started with a double kill (yay us) and then their mid and jungle would CONSTANTLY come to kill us. A lot of their attempts failed, but after third time being flash initiated against by 2 people NOT in my lane was just annoying as hell. Like..no exaggeration, they kept 4 people in bot lane for about 85 seconds pushing it. Top did not push, mid was freezing his lane.

I had to comment "Mid, can you at least try and push your lane because they're pushing ours and killing us". He responded back with a snarky "sigh I should have gone support......gg"

Had he gone support I KNOW that my mid lane would not be roaming bot 3 times in 12 minutes without having taken a turret. Some people are just...dense.

I'm not one to really be affected by stupid comments, but I cannot try my hardest knowing I have an incompetent mid laner.

{quoted} I'm not one to really be affected by stupid comments, but I cannot try my hardest knowing I have an incompetent mid laner.

His comment is even more ridiculous if we consider the fact that botlane was essentially turned into a 2 v 4 campsite.

Even the best support in the world is going to have a hard time against an ADC, a Mid Laner, a Jungler, and another Support.

And I mean "a hard time" as in, most of the time, the best outcome that an ally ADC and Support can hope for is to simply get out of that lopsided brawl - alive.

Dissith Bullets1 votes

And thats why you should play a mage instead of support bot so you're actually useful in a 2v4. Instead of complaining about another lane doing well.

Orbv6 votes

There's not a single mage that could handle a Xin/Janna/Lux/Sivir who are trying to both kill you and push your turret.

Dissith Bullets1 votes

Yasuo Anivia Brand Lux Nidalee Singed just to name a few mages that seem to have no problem 1v4ing.

Orbv4 votes

Yasuo is an ADC Caster. He deals physical damage, which is the more common to build resistances against and most champions have a higher Armor per level of.. Mages do ability damage. So in mentioning Yasuo, you're wrong.

When have you seen an Anivia or Singed Support? That in itself is amputating your team because they are much stronger scalers and cannot function without expensive items. Using them bot at all is a gimmick, AND you will not have enough mana to clear consecutive waves against Sivir.

I literally listed Lux as the champion I was up against, and then you listed her as a champion who can 1v4, which it actually was a 2v4. First....wow. Secondly, she has a HORRIBLE time 2v4ing. She has skillshots, her ultimate is reliant on landing an ability if you want to proc her passive or else a supporting Lux's damage is negligible. She has the 11th lowest health in the game, base and scaling wise. If you're going support mage Lux, you WILL NOT have the AP to push a wave and defend yourself.

Nidalee has no CC, and no wave clear, she literally cannot defend a turret against a dive/poke comp.

Brand...at lvl 6 he may be able to given that you landed another spell or else risk his ult going on only minions. It's possible to prevent the push, but he cannot stop a dive.

If you were seriously going to list champions who can 2v4, and yet have no relevance to the champions I listed out, you should have at least said:

Morgana (AoE CC, Magical Protection, Wave Clear, Single Target CC, Spell Vamp for Sustain) Galio (AoE CC, Waveclear / Poke, up to +90 resistances) Heimerdinger (Waveclear, AoE CC, Supported Defense, Health Regen) Zyra (Waveclear, 2 AoE CC) Annie (AoE CC, Waveclear)

ALL better support choices.

The lack of views/upvotes here annoys me. Goes to show how few people truly understand positivity. I've played countless games with players just being negative. Otherwise great players, with decent mechanics and game knowledge, have gotten salty and thrown. It's like they really think harassing a teammate will make them play better...

And the irony of it all, League, in spite of its toxic community, looks down on this behavior the most. One of my most positive friends on League is a shitter on other games. It's so weird

On the other hand, you can use the lack of morale as an advantage. Particularly in solo-queue, I'll select a champion I know I can reliably stomp the early and mid game with (Pantheon, Fizz, etc) and demoralize the enemy team. You'd be surprised how easily a 5 and 0 Pantheon can make a team want to surrender.

When I was in 10th grade I had to take gym class in summer school due to an academically rigorous schedule. Turns out my entire county all had gym summer school concurrently so there were about 400 kids in taking gym at the same time and we had a volleyball tournament set up with several teams. Well there was this spoiled rich brat in my class and on my volleyball team who was an absolute asshole and bully who threatened everyone, including the teacher, regularly. Every time we played a volleyball game any time we got scored on, or someone hit the ball out of bounds, he yelled at us and blamed us for being bad. We lost every game, eleven in a row I believe.

Well, his being an asshole resulted in so many complaints from students and even parents that he got transferred out of my class and therefore also out of my volleyball team, after that we played the team who was up until then undefeated, and we beat them. We then proceeded to run the table and won every game we played until the tournament was over. I think we ended up 6-11 or something like that, but the fact is, this dude was such a negative boost on our morale that him simply being gone was all we needed to outperform even the best competition.

Cause real life sports where you can;t mute someone = playing an online video game where you can? We all know morale is very important in real world situations like sports as well as player confidence which is why morale is a very big part of it. In turn it all has very little impact on a league match with random strangers hat have no way to influence you after the match ends who are random nameless faceless strangers.

Morale in league is riot propaganda that their physiology major game behavior specialist guy told them would help curb wieners behavior.

Nameless Voice6 votes

Of course morale has a huge effect League, just like any other team sport. Why would it be magically different? Morale has an even bigger impact on random strangers, because they need to trust each other enough to play together. Low morale makes people not trust each other, so they can't play together as a team properly. Saying it has no effect after the game is over is outright untrue, winning or losing because of morale affects rank; winning increases your morale and makes you more likely to play well in the next game instead of going on tilt and throwing.

Unless you pre-emptively mute everyone before the game starts, ruining your ability to communicate with your team, you can't "just mute". By the time you know that you need to mute someone, the damage has already been done.

Because morale primarily affects for physical performance not ability to think. Aka you get hyped up and confident you have energy, i dont need to have an adrenaline rush to think and press buttons, infact i think you can argue getting too emotional has a detriment to your thought processes.

sorry playing league is nothing remotely like playing a TEAM SPORT. It shares a few basic "team" concepts but beyond that it isnt remotely like playing a sport.

TeCoolMage3 votes

That is NOT true at all. Let's look at it from an extreme side: self harm is from lack of happiness or morale, and does not require you to not be hyped up.

I dont need to have an adrenaline rush to think and press buttons

I don't need to have an adrenaline rush to play sports, a team of 5 people competing in archery (can't think of an example right now) or something doesn't need adrenaline. On the other hand, champions like LeBlanc and Ryze work a lot better with adrenaline.

playing league is nothing remotely like playing a TEAM SPORT

It really is, reaction times are equally as important and morale is mainly an emotional state, not a physical state, so it matters more in LoL

"If you fail a gank are you expecting me to stop CS'ing to write out a big explanation of what went wrong and how you can do better?"

No ... but you could say something like "wait until they're pushed next time"

Short and simple. And it's better than sarcastically saying "nice gank."

"If you break that easily to a comment just mute and keep playing, or get thicker skin."

No one is breaking. He's saying that people being rude or making sarcastic remarks about poor gameplay can make him feel bad. Of course it can. Feeling bad is not the same as breaking and going into a fetal position with tears down your face. And usually when you feel bad then you play worse. It's just common sense.

"it's a heavily competitive sport"

lol

Maybe at the pro level. But not for everyone else.

"if you didn't look down at yourself for fucking up a gank occasionally you wouldn't get better at the game"

If you're feeling bad or looking down on yourself then you're doing it wrong.

It's a game. The purpose of the game is to have fun. If you're not having fun, then you're not fulfilling the purpose of the game and there's no point in playing it.

I refer to breaking as going on tilt, if you can't handle sarcasm on the internet, don't come on the internet. Saying nice gank after you botched it up shouldn't be throwing you on tilt.

lol

Heavily competitive*

Even in normals, you go in to win and have fun, if you let something that minor throw you off chances are it wasn't that comment that did it.

If you're feeling bad or looking down on yourself then you're doing it wrong.

The purpose of the game is enjoyment, if getting better and winning is your enjoyment it shouldn't discourage you, if getting better and winning isn't your thing it still shouldn't discourage you.

The games Goal is to win, if you aren't following it's goal then don't play.

TurquoiseYoshi22 votes

If the goal is to win, sarcastic criticism is bad. If you don't think you can say something constructive in time, don't say anything. Just making fun of your teammates is disrespectful at best.

Silents4291 votes

A sarcastic comment is not making fun of someone.

If nothing negative is said you never improve, as long as something can come out of it, it doesn't matter how it's said.

Asking a nocturne why the hell he ulted into a 1v5 without us is negative, but it's going to force himself to question why he was being a moron.

TurquoiseYoshi11 votes

sar·casm ˈsärˌkazəm noun the use of irony to mock or convey contempt.

TO MOCK OR CONVEY COMTEMPT!

The Nocturne probably knows ulting into a 1v5 was stupid after he died. Dying is bad. If you died, you know not to do that again.

Silents4291 votes

mock mäk/ verb verb: mock; 3rd person present: mocks; past tense: mocked; past participle: mocked; gerund or present participle: mocking

1.
tease or laugh at in a scornful or contemptuous manner.

Which leads to

scorn·ful ˈskôrnfəl/ adjective adjective: scornful

feeling or expressing contempt or derision.

And finally.

con·tempt kənˈtem(p)t/ noun noun: contempt

the feeling that a person or a thing is beneath consideration, worthless, **or deserving scorn.**

It is not being insulted.

And if all it took for someone to learn was dieing, we would have a lot more good players, but instead we have players who will blame everyone else, The Nocturne might blame his team for not following in, or claim it was an accident etc.

SoMNia17 votes

Suggesting that a person is beneath consideration, worthless, or deserving scorn is not insulting them? Wow. I don't want to risk giving that impression with mere sarcasm, so I'll be blunt: that is really stupid. Of course it's insulting. If you can't handle being on the Internet without insulting people just because you think they're playing a game wrong, then YOU need to stay off the Internet, not them.

I agree. It has gotten to the point that when I make a mistake I just instantly mute everyone on my team until I can make up for it. Not the best idea I know but I just want to stay focused and in my game. Negative comments are distracting and can potentially influence my decisions.

Dextix LT5 votes

Look, i get your meaning. But if i see my jungler towerdiving an enemy and dying to him, will indeed ask him not to gank ever again.

I know that raging and simmilar things do not help the morale, but sometimes you just have to say things like that and make decisions like that.

eleniel CZ4 votes

If your jungler just died towerdiving he propably knows that he did something wrong... As a jungler I know what it is when u die to a tower dive or something stupid like that. Then your lovely midlaner starts to trash talk you and makes your game a pain. That will start your tilt. Maybe because of this you won't give him blue and then he dies, goes on tilt too (because 'F-ing jungler doesn't gank'etc...) I've lost too many games like that, so please just don't say that telling him to never gank again will help. It really doesn't.

PrincessOfHyrule4 votes

I see this all too often in both ranked games and normals alike, it has been this way for 3 solid seasons (a bit more often in season 5 that 3 and 4), but regardless i don't really tend to say anything when something bad happens, but i like to tell them "gj", and more positive things along those lines to get them to feel better about it. If i believe what i will tell them will help them then i will, and i will say it in a nice and polite manner, but i tend to be the more positive quiet kind of teamate.

In fact in a ranked game i had an adc who wasn't doing too well in lane, so i continued along, not saying anything, after a couple of deaths, he was like this game was over, but i continued to tell him that its not and we will be fine as long as we teamfight and peel for him. We got their inhibitor, but i made an overly aggressive play on their fed adc, with which we killed their adc, but the enemy team got to dive our back line without any means of retaliation. We lost the game, but I was glad that he gave it his best effort, regardless of the fact that he wasn't doing well.

chipndip14 votes

I for one agree with this notion, but the amount of people that don't learn from their mistakes and continue to feed, tilt or not, is just too damn high. I can't just forgive someone for dying 6-7 times in laning phase without jg interference. At that point you aren't even trying.

Let me break this logic down for you. Your teammate dies a lot. You feel angry. You have to rage on him to feel better, because you have to carry him.

Sorry, I can't follow. This implies you would play drastically better after blaming on someone?

You don't seem to get how this works.

You let your anger out on them. All of a sudden your other teammates, who are doing fine on their own, feel a little less inclined to peal for you, or a little less inclined to back you up when you go in.

Instead of having just one problem on the team, you've made yourself a second liability.

Talk to your monitor if you have to, but don't press that "Enter" key to vent at people.

I just had a game, the score was 17-19, my team was down in kills, BUT we had 3 drags and the enemy had 0, we had 4 towers on them, and our team started a surrender vote and it went 4-1. Simply because we didn't have more kills than the enemy team, they thought it was GG. I hate when we have a game that's going very well in our favor and then people give up.

Orders4 votes

Most enjoy defaulting to sarcastic, sly comments on the internet. Personally, I would never ever say anything negative if a teammate fails to do something. The only time I really talk in-game is pinging objectives or discussing strategies. All I say is "gj" or "nice" if my teammate does particularly well.

There's no reason for people to be condescending towards others when they don't succeed in their task.

PhoenixOfHeaven4 votes

I bring this up all the time when my team is arguing. I say 'Yelling at each other is helping who exactly?' the stupid part is people still feud even after that. Its no just League, its human nature. Every game will go down that path, so just go down notably faster.

I played Marvel Heroes, which on its 1st year I refered to as a haven from League. You were lucky to find someone who would do anything close to insulting. Now, its been 2 years the game as been out and the game is rolling downhill fast. community is terrible, always insulting the developers and each other.

One of my good friends always wants to play with another one of their friends when we play, and that person is RIDICULOUSLY mean. I'm not the best player, I can admit that, but there's only so many degrading, mean comments I can take. This person thinks it's a joke, but by the end of the game I'm just mindlessly walking into the jungle and feeding because I'm so on-tilt. I don't understand why people can't just be nice about any criticism they have. You're so much more likely to have a good reaction.

DazedOnlooker3 votes

As a support main when people yell at me for any reason and put me on tilt, i just ignore chat for a bit. I notice that people will just leave me alone when they realize that i'm never going to respond to their insults because they either think i muted them, or they (far too often) think that i have chat restriction ban or something. usually 3 things will happen,

  1. They keep up with the insults knowing i'm ignoring them(50% chance of winning)

  2. They will pick another victim to criticize and harass making things worse because the next guy will retaliate thus causing us to lose at a faster rate

or

  1. They afk, and we /ff

I know myself well enough to know that once i respond to the harass, all of a sudden i start typing like a 4 year old who just learned how to read because i'm angry and upset. i just continue to do what i can until its over but you better bet that i sure as hell will start to play with less clarity and awareness because your hurtful words kept me on tilt for the rest of the game.

II usually don't type in chat anyway as i tend to communicate 99% of the time via pings.

And i'm pretty sure instead of typing "stop feeding scrub" you can instead type "Ward tri/river/baron" or "keep tabs on mini map" to survive most ganks, within the same time span....idk what makes some people think they have to use the tired excuse of "i shouldn't have to type an essay on what you did wrong and how to fix it" i feel like that response is an excuse so that angry people can continue putting others down without actually helping them.
