So besides wasting my time what is the point of placement matches?

InfinitexMortal··109 votes·6,329 views

Won 8/10 placed went from being silver 5 to bronze 5.. So instead of wasting my time playing 10 pointless games (about 6.5 hours) in which i could be climbing how about you add a 'skip placements' and just start me off at b5 anyways? Would save a lot of time. Can't wait to waist 6.5 hours placing b5 in flex :D [slayer-jinx-wink] But seriously if you're going to place me b5 no matter how many games i win don't make me waste time playing fake placement games. You gotta think of it like this..

Platinum is the highest a person can get in placement matches.

this means all the diamond, challenger, master tier players are getting pushed down to platinum,

causing all the plats to golds, golds to silver, silver to bronze etc.

I was gold 5 last season, placed silver 2 this season. it just happens.

well he doesn't argue with it, he just wants to skip playing 10 useless games because if he was placed straight to b5 without playing them he would likely be b4 already after playng th same amount of games, and when he is placed to b5 after playing them they feel like a waste of time even despite his mmr got better

I get 27 LP a win in silver. When ranks resetted in S6, I was getting 50LP a win in Bronze when I got placed in Bronze. So, technically, he would probably be around bronze 2/bronze 1 right now.

The Deckowner4 votes

that is a fucking lie the max LP you can get in a win is about 30, it is impossible to get 50 lp in a wim.

Brain Errör 4041 votes

? When Flex Queue first came out I was getting 35LP a win. And others were getting 40+, some even getting 60. How is 30LP the max?

I haven't placed in Solo/Duo yet, so I can't confirm if it's changed. But that's how much I got up until silver when I was getting like 25ish and finally dropping down to the regular 20 at S1. Did I miss something?

The Deckowner3 votes

MMR RANKING AND JUMPING OVER DIVISIONS During a long win streak, MMR starts to outrun your current division / ELO. In this case you would receive **up to 40 points **per win while lose only about 10-15. Such MMR allows to jump over division, e.g. Gold 5 to Gold 3. However it’s compensated the fact that you wouldl be matched against opponents 2-5 divisions above yours. This often happens during big elo boosting orders, when 7 or more divisions should be elo pushed up.

40 is the accurate maximum you can get, 30 is about as high as you can actually possibly get since 40 will require ridiculous amount of win streak to the point where you will already finish promo, and the system will allow you to skip division to the rank your mmr indicates. Getting 50 or 60 is impossible.

Flex queue MMR was messed up so people either get a huge amount of lp or super low amount of lp, it was a bug. If you get 18~20 lp per win then your mmr is about the same as your rank.

Brain Errör 4041 votes

That's odd. Maybe I got it confused. I'm 100% sure, if not last season, season 5 when I placed in bronze 4, I was getting 50LP a win from there. I remember distinctly cause I only required 2 games to hit promos. This is before the whole free win for promos became a thing.

Maybe they changed it from S5? I'm use to the regular 20 right now so it's quite difficult for me to remember all the LP gains for each rank I'm in. I just distinctly remember getting the 50 per win whenever I was in bronze.

EMeta2 votes

The exception to the LP trend Deckowner mentioned is right after you finish Placements. Since Riot knows relatively little about your skill so far, your games are weighted much more heavily. I don't know how long this takes to wear off entirely, but it does so pretty gradually.

Hella Kaiser3 votes

this is BS. plat is too low for challengers and masters. they should let people end up in diamond from placements if they were challenger/master

Steenee3 votes

I agree with this. Instead of screwing everyone below over by shifting the ladder down to account for Diamond/Master/Challenger, let them be special. If not Diamond 1 as their max, maybe Diamond 2 or 3. This would stop people from being placed way lower than they deserve.

Was Platinum 2 two seasons ago, went 8-2, got placed in Silver 2 last season. Was Platinum 5 with MMR of Gold 3 last season, went 5-5, got placed in Silver 3 this season.

Excuse me while I call placements utter bullshit.

But Dia, Master, Challenger players only make like 0.1% of the player base... That doesn't make sense

Edit: They make 2.16% of the player base. Still makes no sense

Better Jungler1 votes

You remember this pushes plats down further too. Most plat 3/4/5 are going to be in gold, it ends up being around 12% of the top players condensed into the remaining 88%.

See I understand that, but if you are just going to be placed bronze V anyways fuck the damn placement matches, let us restart completely anew every season, that's how it should be that way if we win 8 out of 10 placement matches then obviously we don't belong in our ello hell when you start rank if you suck you get bronze V but if you tank it so badly, your mmr crashes so fucking low, it's retarded. At least if you are going to put me in bronze V anyways don't waste my time with placement matches. I sucked badly which is why I was in bronze V but then i got better I've improved, but I lost a lot of games, so I have to catch back up to my new ello in a way which is hard when I'm playing with this last round of fucking idiots that I should of dodged considering the pieces we were missing, we didn't have a real support, no apc, no assassin, no bruser, we had a weak ass tank line cuz my idiotic teammates decided hey let's completely feed the enemy, let's not ward.

My support focusing on the Nami while Kai'Sa is right there......Illaoi feeding Swain and Xin Zhao, Ezreal getting romp stomped in mid by Lucian, and an ammumu that I swear up and down either a never jungle or b first time ammumu.

Better Jungler1 votes

If they let you restart competely fresh, then you will probably place mid silver. It has to take into account your past seasons history. I consider myself an expert in this. I've made 4 accounts now, 2 to see where I place if I do really well in placements, and 2 trying to place into bronze.

This was my first ever account, and I was bronze 4/5 for all of season 2 and 3. I was gaining 16 lp per win, and losing 20+ lp per loss. So I was in that shitty spot that you mentioned.

I made a new account, leveled it 1-30 and did my placements. I dont remember how I did, probably 6-4 or something. But I placed silver 4. When I won a game on that account I got 25 lp, and lost like 16. So I was climbing REALLY fast, and hit gold 5 pretty quick.

I thought this was interesting, so I made another account to try and place bronze. I went 3-7 in placements, and placed silver 3 and havent logged on to that account again.

I made YET another account to see if I could place in bronze. I lost 8/10 placement matches, with an OVERALL kda of 9-84. (IN 10 GAMES I GOT 9 KILLS AND DIED 84 TIMES.).. I placed silver 3.

Moral of the story, if they let you restart fresh, you'll likely benefit from it and place in silver.

Its kind of a "screwed if you do, screwed if you don't" situation. If you let people voluntarily start in bronze 5, you'll have a massive smurfing problem. on the other hand, if you let people restart fresh, they will just restart their mmr and again play out of their league.

My final point of advice... Make a new account, place higher, and use that little boost to NEVER return to bronze again.

Troll for Trump7 votes

Placements are basically complete RNG, as with promos and everything else. It's x out of 10 games, and it's not an accurate sample size.

Squey5 votes

Mid plat to Silver, 3 years in a row now. others win way fewer games and get placed way higher. Makes no sense

1st Movement4 votes

You have higher mmr starting from b5

Let me ask you What the point of playing rank if you could keep your ranking for several season

Then there no incentive for playing

TequilaZombie3 votes

Maybe to constantly climb and/or struggle to keep your position? If you have to constantly climb back to YOUR OWN rank because you're artificially demoted it can get quite frustrating. But then it falls into personal taste. Some people will enjoy climbing back, others won't.

ntbcool2 votes

Then people would just start having their account boosted and camping ranks.

TequilaZombie2 votes

Not really. It would be pretty for them to keep themselves at that rank.

Also, this already happens.

I see the OP's request as more "treat me like I won 0/10 placements and let me play games that matter, rather than play 10 games for the same result."

Xonra3 votes

I pretty much feel the same way. I have gone 8/10, 7/10, and etc and have similar results in multiple seasons. I'd rather just skip it and not waste the hours playing pointless games.

I don't have all day every day to play, so 10 matches before I get to games that matter is annoying.

JDB8eoX8x04 votes

Climbed to Gold 1 in Flex, then they resetted it for no reason. Now I lose all my placement games and switched back to Solo Queue. It's Riot's fault for letting people play placement games pre season just to say "Fuck you dickhead, you climbed to Gold 1 for nothing.", because it WILL be for nothing. I main Support and lose all my games to Plat Yasuos on my own team feeding 0/10/3. Since my placements go so poorly now, they have an excuse to put me into Silver AGAIN and screw me over yet another time. Then they expect me to climb again, but no thank you. I'm done climbing for the rest of the season. There's only so much I can tolerate, and playing 31 Placement games, 10 Solo Q, 10 Preseason Flex, 10 Flex AND 1 Placement game because they resetted ranks because of crying challengers is one of those things I won't tolerate.

ntbcool10 votes

They said they were going to reset it...... Season 7 didn't start until the 7th The reason they had it open was to make sure it was working fine for when the season started and to give people a chance to raise there mmr. The didn't want all the challenger players starting the season destroying bronze players, so they let people get a head start if they so choose to. AKA it wasn't for nothing

I made gold five last season, and I used to be like "WOW THERE ARE PLATS ON MY TEAM"

now im just like "oh, its a "plat yas" or a "plat lee". All these supposedly good players are so ungodly bad. I dont get it. But the enemy plats actually know what they are doing

man idk if i even want to finish them i get matched with both bronze and gold. Gold being on the enemy team ofc.

EternalShred3 votes

In season 5 , my friend was stuck in bronze the whole time and he kept saying it's cuz of his placements and that when he would get to redo them he will get gold ... skip to season 6 , wins 8/10 games ----> b5----> quits league

LatetotheRace2 votes

I get the frustration, but they've done this to offset all of the boosting that happened last season. (Not sure what flex queue rank is about though, I see no reason to do any kind of reset that's out of the ordinary for any other season.)

Xonra2 votes

They didn't do it for any reason than they do it every season. It was the same last year and etc. Has nothing to do with this previous season, it is just what it is.

LatetotheRace2 votes

I do believe that this season is much more severe.

Automated Riven1 votes

no.. I have ended high silver every year and get placed back into low or mid bronze every year.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

It is definitely different this year than the seasons before. I remember quite well getting mixed with everything during my placements every season because all mmrs were pretty close to each other thanks to top playerbase shifting down and such. But this season in the two placement matches i played i only ever played exactly against the same elo i played during the season and i bet they do this to single out all the boosted dias and high plats.

xelaker2 votes

because the people u played against had higher mmr. You must have been duo qing with some higher ranked players.

I play alone though...and most of the other people in the games were silver or lower...

Supreme Senpai691 votes

You had higher MMR. Did you finish the season around Silver 2 by any chance? They drop you an entire division of MMR assuming you go 5/5. Otherwise there's no reason to have differing seasons if you just keep your rank, they want people to have to climb again and prove they deserve that rank. So a gold 5 will place silver 5 if they win half their placement matches.

That being said, for anybody silver 5 and under, it's insanely frustrating. Because it means even if they win all ten games, they'll be placed bronze 4 or 5 regardless-- while logical, they could have simply started bronze 5 and won ten games and been bronze 3 or something. Placements are a waste of time for these cases.

Automated Riven1 votes

that cant be true. I went 2-8 and got dropped from silver 2 to bronze 2

Supreme Senpai691 votes

Placement matches don't matter in themselves, they just have more of an affect on your MMR than standard games. You went down exactly one division, which is exactly what I said. How can't it be true? Yes, 2/8 isn't 5/5, but not everyone has silver 2 MMR in silver 2. I was in silver 2 and I had gold 5 MMR. I've seen platinums with low gold MMR and bronzes with silver MMR. It's not about rank, just MMR.

So your MMR was 6 wins higher than the average silver 2 MMR which made up for the 3 placement game losses from an even 5/5. Then you fell a division.

It's like this every season and somehow people forget. They always, always, always drop you an entire division lower than your MMR. And it always sucks, I'm not defending it, but it's intended and consistent. The start of a ranked season always sucks too because challenger = platinum, so you can have platinums in your bronze games. It's always wise to wait until the dust settles to play ranked.

Automated Riven2 votes

Oh I understand what you mean. sorry about that. And yes I would agree about waiting. early ranked is all about the stomps. Altho I am trying to climb as early as possible this year so I am already playing.

Lux Is Mai Waifu2 votes

Also they're incredibly aggravating and devolve into to seeing if you can carry progressively worse teams, until you reach rock bottom and are the only one on your team with runes.

Supreme Senpai693 votes

Don't forget you're not just losing LP constantly. The harder you fall the harder it is to win because you get worse teammates, and the father down you go. But the farther down you go, the less MMR you have; it'll get to a point where you finally win a game only to get 5 LP.

KazaJhodo2 votes

Anyone remember their first placements?

My first ranked season ever, where I was at my most retarded point- which was amazingly bad, I was placed silver 2. I can tell from playing lots of games in mid silver, that many people are still placed there while in their un-enlightened state.

This, among other things, is bad for ladder health. All I did was throw games for people that had worked hard to get to silver 2. I was literally game cancer, but I didn't know at the time. I thought I had been placed correctly, I thought I was decent. I didn't realize I knew nothing, nothing at all yet.

EVEN WORSE I endured tons of flame for being 'bad'. I was bad, I didn't belong there, I was cancer and it wasn't my fault I was there.

Riot put me there, it ran its calculations and thats where I belonged. It was bad for the invested players, its was bad for the new player. It ruins the ladder and inherently the fun of the game. It creates toxicity in the city (sorry).

Just the idea that riot thinks they can tell a players skill in just 10 games, while that player is with 4 randoms, playing against 5 other randoms... is a complete failure of logic.

There is no way to tell a players skill accurately with that many variables effecting the player. Sure, you may be able to say, oh these stats at this point in the game over ten games... gold 3 player when compared to aggregated player data. Those aggregated stats would be correct of course. However all of those stats within the 10 games were drastically effected by everyone else in the game, so everyone else in the game impacted your performance. 10 games being the key here, if you had that performance over 100 games... ok that may be a little more convincing. NO RIOT NO, NOT 100 PROMO GAMES! Its not what I meant...please.

Just getting countered in lane can drastically impact your performance in a game.

I know I know, some of you will disagree, but wait! I have proof.

Play a ranked game. Seem evenly matched? Everyone on similar pages of skill and game knowledge?

Maybe thats why the game is so toxic? Curious.

yay nibbers1 votes

It's not just about how many wins you get. There's other factors that come into play (not that I personally know them).

But in the end if you deserve to be a higher rank you'll get there eventually [slayer-jinx-wink]
