Today I learned that Mana Gating is a 'minor gameplay issue'
Which is probably why riot doesn't use it anymore...

They may not use it much on new champions but they sure still let it exist on old ones. Here's a list of champions I've personally run OOM on in the last two months alone while NOT just spamming spells.

How do you run out of mana on Kayle?
You rank up her heal and then make the mistake of actually using it.
Don't be silly, you can't run oom on Anivia.
She never has mana anyway.

you missed

Actually I only missed
. Note that I said "I've personally run OOM on in the last two months" and not "people can easily run OOM on." I have gone OOM on those other 3 though, it's just been a long time since I played them. :p
ok kids, League has been out 5 years, MMO's 20 years, learn to fucking manage your mana already
ok kids, League has been out 5 years, MMO's 20 years, learn to fucking manage your mana already
It isn't mana management that's the problem, its the fact that other champs don't have to manage.
-ish
with his free ult

lmao the tears... "Ekko isn't mana because his ult is free"
lmao
champ releases are so annoying with you people
Doesn't have to manage resources
Hahahahahahahaha. Good one.
He doesn't get mana back when he ults, does he? Ive never noticed because I'm to busy running for my life as him.
Nope.
You include
and
as if they are viable even without mana costs.
If they all had the same system from the start and as each other and those systems were good and do I really need to go on? Should I start a conversation about managing my mana AND my burning embers? Or how about just how mana was last season?
1/10 for getting me to respond to your crappy bait.
If you run out of mana in League it's plainly your fault, I don't get how you think otherwise
You know how much mana you have, you know your regen, you know your costs. Whining "I'm oom!" is just a petulant child that wants whatever they whine for instead of taking responsibility and knowing your limits.
You're clearly in a whole other reality. I hope you enjoy it there.

alot of those champs in general spam spells. And sivir can't run out of mana with the shield.
If a champion is designed to spam a spell all the time to be on par with the champions who don't need to they shouldn't go OOM doing so. In their ideal mana usage situations almost no champion goes OOM. But games are filled with the unideal in the form of fights, harassment from the enemy, and objective taking.
Sivir can run out of mana DESPITE her shield. Also if you miss time her shield even once or they just don't try to hit you with spells she OOMs VERY easily. Someone please do the math and see how many times she has to cast her Q at lvl 3 to OOM assuming she blocks just one spell with her shield at lvl 1 rank on both spells.
How were you not spamming on Eve? She has one mode and that's Q on CD.
In combat and with just that spell of course. But that's Eve's design. I don't personally count that as 'spamming spells' because you're not doing it wrong or wastefully. But yeah it's spamming in a more literal sense. Still she's expected to spam Q and it OOMs her very easy. Rito plz fix! :D
I'm going to give my opinion about those I play in that list.
Definitely needs help in the mana department. His E's heal is so weak you need to spam it for it to be any use, but it drains your mana too fast to be spammed.
Get Doran's Ring on him, make sure to last hit as much as you can. Rush a catalyst then turn it into a RoA then get Frozen Heart. If you do this, you shouldn't go OOM on Cho except very early on.
Manamune is your friend.
Haven't had issues any more than on other ADCs.
You shouldn't be going OOM on Kayle. I don't know why you have issues with her. Don't use her Q to harass BTW.
Haven't played her in a while and that's precisely why. God she runs out of mana fast.
Sion has many issues right now and his mana is the least of them. Between his ult being too easy to dodge and his Q getting interrupted all the time during team fights, his mana issues fly out the window.
Are you kidding me? I NEVER run out of mana on Thresh. It is exceedingly rare for me to have mana issues on him.
Ziggs definitely needs some love in the mana department. Considering he's designed around spamming his Q, it's egregious how quickly he goes OOM.
As a long-time Alistar player (he was one of the main reasons I got to Gold in S4), I need to drive this point home:
Your E is SUPPOSED to be a terrible heal, in the sense that it's not supposed to heal YOU a huge amount. We're not talking Soraka's Wish, or Nidalee's bullshit heal, or anything else like that, because those are single-target heals.
Alistar's heal is ludicrous because it heals every single ally nearby you for the same amount, and can be spammed as long as enemies are dying near him. This makes it invaluable for minion pushes; you can get a whole cannon wave up to a turret at full health with Alistar, making the turret drop very quickly. It's also fantastic during the mid-late game because you can keep your allies constantly healed as you fight for objectives.
If you level E first on Ali, you're not playing him right. You should also prioritize at least one mana / regen item for him, whether it be Frozen Heart, Righteous Glory, or Mikael's Crucible.
As someone who got to Diamond spamming Alistar, he needs NO buffs whatsoever.
He is borderline OP at the moment.
I'm going to give my opinion about those I play in that list.
Ziggs definitely needs some love in the mana department. Considering he's designed around spamming his Q, it's egregious how quickly he goes OOM.
http://i.imgur.com/1wUXtQ8.png People like you give me trust issues.
Not that you said I did but... note I didn't say I play them all well or correctly. Just that I OOMed without spamming. Of course spamming spells or not is largely a matter of opinion. Most of what you said is good advice and/or correct in my opinion but I do feel some have it a little worse than you make it out to be.
In general supports just OOM early on so easily. Your adc wants you to have 'lane presence' yet still wants a full rotation of spells from you when they get caught out or start a fight they shouldn't. And they NEVER look at your mana before making a decision.
Or you're the adc and your support creates no presence with his positioning OR spells and you're left using spells too often to fend off the enemy team. Also last hitting with just autos is harder to get good at on the east coast. :(
The issue with most of the champions you listed is that until/unless you buy a sapphire crystal their mana pool is miniscule. 400g shouldn't nearly double your mana pool ever, let alone at lvl 5 and % base mana regen obviously does little to nothing early on. Sadly there's no flat regen support item, hence we're stuck taking mana regen runes.
A few specifics: Thresh OOMs from throwing hooks decently often. Cho OOMs period, even after catalyst it's incredibly easy. Alistar I agree with the person below about his heal, don't spam that for you or your adc. Yeah I need to stop trying to harass with Q as Kayle. Sion only gets by mana wise because he almost always starts flask. Ziggs is fine, you just can't use his E to help wave clear like last season.
I just learned to manage Lulu's mana after her mana buff, mastery changes and man reg. runes, but guess what? They reverted the mana changes on PBE.
I cryed only for 3 hours. My tears tasted purple.....
Then you weren't playing with Cass efficiently, she's hard to keep your mana up before your first back but it's still possible. After your tear you shouldn't go oom unless you are taking Baron or Dragon w/o blue buff.
Lulu is magic, can run out of mana even in Dominion O_o
While a lot of those clearly have serious issues, there are also many of them that you can manage your mana on very easily.
I'd say the only reason a few of them run OOM is because you're spamming 100% of the time, like Sion.
People keep using this phrase "manage your mana" like it just makes the problem go away. If you sit there and use all of Sion's abilities just to clear waves then yeah, you're going to OOM pretty fast.
But that's not the problem. The problem is fighting the enemy champion. When they can kill you with 40% of their mana pool in 3 seconds and you can't kill them with 130% of your mana pool (thanks to say a crystalline flask) over 15 seconds something seems a bit off. It's even worse when you try to do something like lane vs Gnar. You have to use mana to farm from a distance or else you just die for nothing. If you use it REALLY well you can delay your death for a while but still die and not even pressure the Gnar. Most likely you just back early and lose cs and xp and he gets even harder to deal with. Meanwhile Gnar is spamming his boomerang every 11 seconds at lvl 1 alone and gets REWARDED for it. By champion lvl 5 it's a 8.25 second cd and just keeps dropping until it's 4 seconds at lvl 16. And no, it's not that hard to catch the boomerang.
Let me restate; WHILE SOME OF THOSE CHAMPIONS CLEARLY HAVE SERIOUS ISSUES many of the champions he listed are easy to manage mana on.
The only reason you would go oom on them is if you spam them constantly.
And that's the point of having mana in the first place, stopping champions from spamming contantly.
Let me restate: I never said they all have serious mana issues. I said I OOMed on them without spamming spells. Returning (or not) to base often is a HUGE factor in mana, especially early on.
I think everyone agrees that if my spell has a 10 second cd and I cast it every 10 seconds I'm spamming it. But what if my spell has a 10 second cd and I cast it every 30 seconds? How fast should a champion OOM on average by casting their costliest ability 1/3 as often as possible? And obviously the answer is very different at lvls 1-3 than it is at lvls 10-13. It depends on builds, on which champion, ect. Personally I don't consider casting 1.5 spells a minion wave on average to be spamming in most cases (except maybe the first 2-3 waves, depends on champion a lot). The problem is some champions can cast 3 a wave no problem, others can barely cast 1. And the impact of those spells isn't so different that that ends up still being fair most of the time.
"And that's the point of having mana in the first place, stopping champions from spamming contantly."
If that's true then why can some champions spam oppressive spells constantly while others can barely cast stuff that rarely even hits the opponent? Sometimes the answer is simply poor balancing. But often times it's other stuff, like that some champions are late game champions and have to suffer sucking early on to scale into the late game really well.
The problem with late game champions is that for a huge amount of players you can't realistically play for the late game right now. Games are shorter than they were last season (which I like) and you can't rely on your team mates to not feed the enemy. At most ranks below Diamond (and often even at Diamond and above) games are just decided way too early these days to have champions that take a long time to get going. Some champions (like new Ryze) suck really early on but stop sucking fast enough that they work out. Others though take so long to get going that even amongst pros no one is able to make them work often enough for it to be worth picking them.
tl;dr % base mana regen very strongly pushes mana issue champions into being late game champions. Games are currently not long enough for most of those to ever shine though. Things aren't horribly unplayable for the most part but they're still pretty unfair.
You aren't getting my point.
I'm saying the vast majority of the champions listed don't even have this issue in the first place.
"Let me restate: I never said they all have serious mana issues. I said I OOMed on them without spamming spells. Returning (or not) to base often is a HUGE factor in mana, especially early on."
I never claimed they had that issue. I merely stated "Here's a list of champions I've personally run OOM on in the last two months alone while NOT just spamming spells." There are many cases where it's reasonable to run out of mana on champions who don't need any change from Riot in regards to their mana without 'spamming.' I see it in LCS games, I see it in my own Silver games, I see it non ranked games. Some of the champions I listed DO need a change in my opinion, but my first post in this thread wasn't about that.
The point is that Riot DOES use mana gating which is in contrast to the original post of this entire thread which states "Which is probably why riot doesn't use it anymore..." while referring to mana gating. It really is that simple.

So basically half the supports. I know that feel...
BTW for the "noobs" of us that don't know what "mana gating" is.....
When skill usage is tied to a resource (mana), in order to prevent a champion from spamming skills all day. A limitation additional to cooldown.
Something Zed, Katarina, Riven, etc are inexplicably allowed to completely ignore at the cost of....nothing.
itemization. In theory.
Kat doesn't want to build flask or ring and doesn't build morello's, but aside from that the non-mana items are pretty damn powerful.
Actually, Riot used to talk about how mana champs were limited early game, but less limited late game when they had mroe mana, whereas Energy and manaless champs would run out of energy/CD's in a teamfight as compared to mana champs
THIS WAS NEVER TRUE THOUGH
except for
manaless champs would run out of CD's in a teamfight as compared to mana champs
You make my sides hurt, rito.
If they increased her cooldowns just a little bit she'd probably be perfectly fine. Her overbearingly short cooldowns make CDR on her even more painful (there's math on this one that I remember) than you might think at first. If they increased her non-ult cooldowns a bit, she'd actually have to think in teamfights. Her initial attack would be unaffected, which is fine, but it would harm her ability to fight in a very protracted encounter, which is good since she's based on Fighting game character designs, and they want fairly short fights that they control. The longer the fight goes, the less control they have. Except the problem is that Riven doesn't give up any of that control as the fight goes on because of her cooldowns that get hilariously short with skill ranks.
Yet champs like Lux, Syndra, Ori, and Zyra are CD locked to the point where they can sit waiting even after building 40% CDR. With the exception of Syndra, they can't even clear a single minion wave without waiting (Lux being the worst off).
And that's actually an advantage. She doesn't NEED a flask, rings, or Morello's to be relevant before making a big purchase. It's an advantage that she can legitimately rush a Luden's or Zhonya's without completely gimping her sustain.
Mana-hungry champs have to go through the first 20 minutes of the game un-nerfing themselves. In the time it takes for Lux to build Athene's and basic boots, Kat built Luden's and Sorc shoes, giving her a massive AP and speed advantage while already negating the majority of MR from Athene's.
Actually its not free. Can you imagine if Kata had mana costs. She would probably the weakest mid laner early, even worst than
(ap)
. Note that i'm talking about mana-damage efficiency early. . So, if she were to get mana costs, she would have to be buffed. Do you really want that to happen?
doesn't use it and he was one of the first champs in League.
Granted that's only one champion, but still, he's one of the most hated ability spammers in League, so it isn't just nowadays.
"One of the most hated ability spammers in league"
Yeah.. These guys are on an entirely different level.

Whenever I used to play Yasuo, I thought I was playing Tekken on a moba. XD What are cooldowns? Yasuo will never know. After he builds BC/Ghostblade (or lucidity, both are viable) then he has like...no wait time. XD
Passive: walk/dash/blink Q: 1.33 W: I think I stopped it at like 10 seconds or something lol E: 0.5 R: 17 seconds.
Dem cooldowns doh.
