Looking for wave management tips

As the title says, I've been watching a lot of players who are outstanding at this aspect of the game. TFBlade recently started putting out very informative long gameplay videos and I'm loving them! I've even watched that "Only wave management video you'll need" and in my case the title is misleading! Jokes aside, it's very informative but I'd like some guidelines from players who can add on to thus topic.

As for myself, I often find myself taken hostage in lane at times when I'm not even that much behind! I've tried doing various things with my waves but I've never managed to control both my and my opponent's waves, resulting in me losing a lot of cs (my avg is about 6-7 cs a minute, which is decent but I want it to be better).

I've found that hard pushing all the time usually does the trick for me when I'm playing Riven. It is probably because it's plat elo and people don't punish aggressive playstyle as much..

I'd like to know more on the topic of wave management, how to freeze and slow push properly, when to hard push and when not to. And does anyone know if watching Dopa's stream would help me understand the matter quicker?

All advices and suggestions are welcome!
